Audition Packet 2019 Audition Packet 2019 Auditionees will progress through three sections of the audition process. Grade 5 - 8 students will have 15 minutes in three different rooms: Room 1 – choreography, where they learn a few dance steps, Room 2 – review script pieces, Room 3 – review vocals. After this rotation, they will enter the room with the adjudicators and perform the vocals and read from the scripts that they have reviewed. You will find a link to the script and music pieces below. Fourth graders will audition on Monday, August 19, but they will not need to prepare for the audition except to learn a clip from the song “Beauty and the Beast.” The script for Beauty and the Beast is very similar to the animated Disney version, so you may wish to watch the movie for inspiration. However, don’t worry about copying the movie exactly! Please feel free to make the characters your own. The script for Cheaper by the Dozen, however, is nothing like the Steven Martin film. It is based on the 1948 novel by Frank Bunker Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. You must bring the items listed below to your audition! • Signed Family Participation Contract (please keep the additional information) • Signed Audition Form • A picture of yourself that we can keep In this packet, you will find: • Audition Song and Scene Information (page 2) • Link to Audition Materials (page 2) • Audition Form (pages 3 - 4) • Family Participation Contract (pages 5 - 7) Audition Song Information Everyone should be ready to sing the applicable highlighted “general” song. If you’re interested in a specific role, you may choose one of the characters listed below and prepare his/her song, in addition to the “general.” Please know in advance that we may only be able to let you sing one of the songs you have worked on. We need to make sure that we will have time to hear everyone! Fifth - Eighth Grade Girls’ Songs: Fifth - Eighth Grade Boys’ Songs: • General: “Beauty and the Beast” • General: “Human Again” • Belle: “Home” • Lumiere: “Be Our Guest” • Mrs. Potts: “Be Our Guest” • Gaston: “Gaston (Reprise)” Fourth Grade Song: • “Beauty and the Beast” Audition Scene Information Fifth – Eighth Grade: Please be prepared to read scenes from both Cheaper by the Dozen and Beauty and the Beast during your audition. You may be asked to read as different characters, though we will not have time for you to read every scene and character. ***Here is a link to audition materials, including rehearsal tracks, accompaniment tracks, character breakdowns, and acting scenes: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/17CPmmW9jnASWuDTDHRBTk8q Jw0b-c-LY?usp=sharing Audition Form This form is to be completed and brought to auditions with a PHOTO and student/parent signed contract. Family Participation Contract Please read this contract very carefully! Much work is required to stage a production, and we want you to understand, as much as possible, your commitment. We want you to understand that you are making a commitment for your student and your family in the following ways: • Parents are also committing to serving in producing the production (props, costumes, set…). Each parent is expected to sign up for a production committee and “a week of performance” job. Parents are also expected to help to break down after the final performance. • If an actor chooses to drop out of this cast or is removed from the cast for disciplinary reasons, the participation fee will not be returned. • The actor will commit to cooperating with Miss Myers, Mrs. Scott, the Musical Director, and Choreographer during rehearsals so that our time will be used wisely. The actor will encourage other cast members with positive words to and about them. • It is crucial that I come to the rehearsals on time to practice for my part. A missed rehearsal can and will result in the loss of stage time. • Continued tardiness to rehearsals effects not only me but the entire cast. It may result in removal from the cast. • There are absolutely no pre-arranged absences allowed for after school rehearsals 2 weeks prior to the play performances, INCLUDING PERIMETER SCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS. An absence may result in being replaced by an understudy. • Costumes and their expense are the responsibility of the cast member with direction from the costumer. We will use our costume closet as much as possible, but they may be as much as $100 - $150. • I understand that there is a $125 activity fee for either play in which I am cast. • Parents agree to contribute a minimum of 20 hours help by signing up for various production jobs in an area of pre-production and the week of the play. Please fill out the Parent Involvement form and include it with your child’s completed Audition Form to be turned in at their audition. • Drama is not an excuse to miss my homework. My rehearsal and stage time may be reduced if my grades drop significantly. If I am put on Academic Probation during the production process, I may be pulled from the production. • I understand that there is often down time offstage while I am waiting to do my role. I will not be disruptive during these times and will be attentive to when it is my time to be onstage. • I understand that a sporting event or lesson is not an excused absence from an announced rehearsal. Exceptions are made for play last minute changes. • Not all students will need to come to every rehearsal; he/she will only be called when necessary. All rehearsals and performances are expected to be held at Perimeter. A more detailed parent meeting will be held when the play is cast. *I may be dismissed from the production if: • I exhibit disruptive or unkind behavior to other students or adults. • I have 2 unexcused absences from rehearsals (i.e. I don’t show up to rehearsal and do not give prior notice). You may email Miss Myers at [email protected] or call her at 770-841-2667 or Mrs. Scott at [email protected], 404-408-8571. If you need to notify us of a child’s illness, you must do so before rehearsal begins. Once rehearsal has begun, we will not check our phones, which may result in you receiving a 7:15 AM phone call. • I am put on Academic Probation. Projected Family Costs: • Participation Fee: $125 (cover lights, sets, sounds, publicity, programs, t-shirts, tech fees, cast/crew meals and rentals). • $75.00 for tech • Costumes: personal expenditures may be up to approximately $100-$150 • Tickets – Musical: $7.00 - $10 or $6.00 for a non-musical general admission. That Most Famous Dozen By DAVID FERGUSON Introduction In the movie, Belles on Their Toes, the last scene depicts Lillian Gilbreth (and Frank looking on from heaven), watching as the last of the Gilbreth Dozen graduates from college, thus ending the film story of this family. While the books, starting with Cheaper by the Dozen, and movies all came out within the same few short years at the middle of the century, the 1925: Lillian with all the children except Anne public certainly has not forgotten the Gilbreth family. Since forming The Gilbreth Network, the most frequently asked questions concern the Gilbreth "children." Where are they now? What did they do for a living? Did any of them have large families? After the web site was created, the requests for information increased to the point where, if I sold this story, I could have retired on the sales. I want to express my thanks to Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, for supplying much of the in- formation contained herein. We discussed this article and had to weigh your interest against the family's desire for privacy. If we could say one thing about the Gilbreth family, it is that they're no different than any of us, in that they like their privacy. After all, we all get too many calls, ask- ing us to switch long-distance phone carriers, without adding to the problem. The Gilbreth Dozen The children of Frank B. Gilbreth and Lillian M. Gilbreth were born between 1905 and 1922. While their father died at the early age of 55 (a month shy of his 56th birthday), his children, for the most part, took after their mother, as far as longevity is concerned.

  • Not So Fast | the New Yorker
8/2/2018 Not So Fast | The New Yorker A Critic at Large October 12, 2009 Issue Not So Fast Scientic management started as a way to work. How did it become a way of life? By Jill Lepore rdering people around, which used to be just a way to get things done, was O elevated to a science in October of 1910, when Louis Brandeis, a fty-three- year-old lawyer from Boston, held a meeting at an apartment in New York with a bunch of experts who, at Brandeis’s urging, decided to call what they were experts at “scientic management.” Everyone there—including Frank and Lillian Gilbreth, best known today as the parents in “Cheaper by the Dozen”—had contracted “Tayloritis”: they were enthralled by an industrial engineer from Philadelphia named Frederick Winslow Taylor, who had been ordering people around, scientically, for years. Speedy Taylor, as he was called, had invented a new way to make money. He would get himself hired by some business; spend a while watching people work, stopwatch and slide rule in hand; write a report telling them how to do their work faster; and then submit an astronomical bill for his services. He is the “Father of Scientic Management” (it says so on his tombstone), and, by any rational calculation, the grandfather of management consulting. Whether he was also a shameless fraud is a matter of some debate, but not, it must be said, much: it’s difficult to stage a debate when the preponderance of evidence falls to one side. In “The Management Myth: Why the Experts Keep Getting It Wrong” (Norton; $27.95), Matthew Stewart points out what Taylor’s enemies and even some of his colleagues pointed out, nearly a century ago: Taylor fudged his data, lied to his clients, and inated the record of his success.

Cheaper By The Dozen By Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. Adapted Text LASSIS: Unit 1 Middle School Adapted Text, December 2013 1 Adapted Text for Cheaper by the Dozen By Frank Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey Chapter 1 – Vocabulary & Text proud Dad job family Dad was a proud man. He was tall and weighed more than 200 pounds. Dad dressed nicely. He wore shirts with a Herbert Hoover collar. Dad was proud of his business. He was an adviser. He told other businesses how to do their job faster and better and speed up production. This is called job efficiency. Dad and mom had 12 children. They knew that they could take good care of their children. Dad was proud of his family. Dad practiced job efficiency in our home. We knew the best way to wash dishes, brush our teeth, and clean our rooms. Dad would time us doing our jobs. He would watch every move we made. He would count the minutes it took to do the job. Then, he told us the best way to do our jobs. We had to fill out a chart everyday when we finished our jobs. Then, dad checked the charts and gave us his approval. He knew how to keep us on our toes. Dad was proud of his family. Dad had a special way of calling all of us together quickly. It was called the assembly call. Assemble means to get together. Dad would blow a whistle. When we heard the call, we didn’t know if it was good news or bad, rags or riches.

  • CHEAPER by the DOZEN Frank B
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. Ernestine Gilbreth Carey The hilarious, heartwarming classic about America’s best-loved family. CHAPTER 1 Whistles and Shaving Bristles Dad was a tall man with a large head, jowls, and a Herbert Hoover collar. He was no longer slim; he had passed the two-hundred-pound mark during his early thirties, and left it so far behind that there were times when he had to resort to railway baggage scales to ascertain his displacement. But he carried himself with the self-assurance of a successful gentleman who was proud of his wife proud of his family, and proud of his business accomplishments. Dad had enough gall to be divided into three parts, and the ability and poise to backstop the front he placed before the world. He'd walk into a factory like the Zeiss works in Germany or the Pierce Arrow plant in this country and announce that he could speed up production by one-fourth. He'd do it too. One reason he had so many children--there were twelve of us -- was that he was convinced anything he and Mother teamed up on was sure to be a success. Dad always practiced what he preached, and it was just about impossible to tell where his scientific management company ended and his family life began. His office was always full of children, and he often took two or three of us, and sometimes all twelve, on business trips. Frequently, we'd tag along at his side, pencils and notebooks in our hands, when Dad toured a factory, which had hired him as an efficiency expert.
