The Base also a more pleasant place to live. has several diesel generators in various lo- cations but the electricity produced by these units is far more costly than that produced at the Desalinization Plant. Due to the short- age of operating funds in the Navy, the diesel Ships in Port 1 generators are not operated routinely. At the present time the capacity of the Desalinization Plant generators is being exceeded. Base residents can play a key role in help- ing to meet both of these problems by prac- ticing electrical conservation. The low voltage situation in the housing areas will be noticeably improved if residents will turn off all electic appliances and lights when they are not truly required. There is a pro- ject under way to correct this problem and funds have been made available. A contract will be let in September to provide new sub- stations and other facilities but this work will take a year to complete. Until that time the only solution is for Base residents to conserve electricity. The heaviest electrical loads occur between 12:00 noon and 8:00 in the evening with the peak demand usialiy being recorded be- tween 5:00 and 7:00 pm. This is the period when the low voltage problem is most serious.
