Kickstarted with the formation of UFA, the rise of German cinema as a modern form of artistic expression paved the way for film to become an outlet for the reflection, discussion, and criticism of German society. The films’ thematic content included focusing on the lives of those marginalized in society, and within that small subset, the topic of homosexuality had already started to be directly addressed nearly a hundred years ago. Male homosexuality became criminalized in 1871 under Paragraph 175 of the criminal code following the formation of the German Reich, but the trends of attitudes towards homosexuality were both still followed and reflected in German films produced in the periods spanning the Weimar Republic, to the divide of the two Berlins, until right up to the night the Berlin Wall fell.

Der weiterbildende Masterstudiengang Zukunftsforschung ver- mittelt – anknüpfend an einen ersten Hochschulabschluss und die qualifizierten Berufserfah- rungen der Studentinnen und Studenten – die Techniken wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens in der 2 Zukunftsforschung und stellt gleichzeitig einen starken Bezug zur Praxis her. Die überzeugenden Abschlussarbeiten von Studierenden aus dem Studienzyklus 2012 sind auch ein Anlass, diese Schriftenreihe zur sozialwissenschaftlichen Zukunftsforschung zu starten. Die Palette der Themen ist entsprechend breit gehalten. Vieles hat explorativen Charakter. Das hat zwei Gründe: Erstens basiert die Zukunftsforschung bisher kaum auf einem konsolidierten wissenschaftlichen Fundament. Ihre Qualitäts- und Gütekriterien sind ebenso in der Diskussion wie ihre wissenschafts- und erkenntnistheoretischen Implikationen. Zweitens ist ihr Gegenstand so allumfassend, dass sich das Feld kaum sortieren, geschweige denn kategorisieren lässt.

It provides an original overview of the themes, strengths and limitations encountered in representations of same-sex love across multiple institutions and examples of public history. This thesis argues that positively, there have been many developments in archives, museums, historic houses, monuments and digital public history that make histories of same-sex love more accessible to the public, and that these forms of public history have evolved to be participatory and inclusive of margnialised communities and histories. It highlights ways that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer (LGBTQ) communities have contributed to public histories of same-sex love and thus argues that public history can play a significant role in the formation of personal and group identities. It also argues that despite this progression, there are many ways in which histories of same-sex love remain excluded from, or are represented with significant limitations, in public history.

    Diaspora, Islam, and belonging: Conceptualising queer Muslim subjectivities in Berlin By Arnold Kovács Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Critical Gender Studies Supervisor: Dr. Nadia Jones-Gailani CEU eTD Collection Second Supervisor: Dr. Vlad Naumescu Budapest, Hungary 2020 Abstract In this thesis, I explore the formation of queer Muslim subjectivities by attending to the multi- faceted ways in which queer people of Muslim backgrounds respond to the temporal and material realities of the matrix of oppression experienced in Berlin, Germany. The project adopts a postcolonial feminist ethnographic approach in order to centre the voices of people constructed as ‘others’ and address the implications of power and positionality on representation in ethnographic knowledge production by foregrounding reflexivity. My analysis is based upon two months of extensive participant observation, as well as eight semi-structured ethnographic interviews, and an interdisciplinary theoretical framework building on scholarship from Religious Studies, Gender and Queer Studies, and Migration Studies. The thesis argues that queer people of Muslim backgrounds cultivate their selves through the articulation of their sense of belonging as they navigate the historically contingent understandings of Islam and sexuality within the context of migration and diaspora. As I further demonstrate, the differing modes of belonging carved out by queer Muslims in Berlin constitute unique ways of reacting to the material realities experienced within the German secular liberal regime.
