PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn SEATTLE SEAHAWKS Team History When the Seattle Seahawks took the field for the first time in the 1976 season, it marked the culmination of a quest for a National Football League franchise that had its roots in the Pacific Northwest metropolis as early as 1957. That is when discussion first began about the possibilities of constructing a domed stadium that would assure a major league sports franchise for the city. On June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the 64,984-seat Kingdome. A civic suggestion campaign netted 20,365 entries and 1,741 different names, but “Seahawks” was selected and announced on June 17, 1975. Just a little more than two months later, after a 27-day sale, the season ticket campaign was shut off with 59,000 tickets sold. On January 3, 1976, Jack Patera, who had been a Minnesota assistant coach, was named the team’s first head coach. The Seahawks finished 2-12 in 1976, when they played in the NFC, and 5-9 in 1977, when they moved into the AFC. The Seahawks had winning 9-7 records in both 1978 and 1979 and Patera was named NFL Coach of the Year the second year. The strike-shortened 1982 season proved to be a transitional year for all of pro football, but no club fit the transitional description better than the Seahawks. Patera was removed after six-plus years as head coach. Mike McCormack finished the season as interim head coach and then was replaced in 1983 by Chuck Knox, who guided the Seahawks to an 83-67-0 record in nine seasons up through the 1991 campaign.

That is the setting as Week 13 will come to a close on ABC’s NFL Monday Night Football with a matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field (ABC, 9:00 PM ET). With a victory, the Seahawks will claim their second consecutive NFC West Division championship and return to the playoffs for the third season in a row. With nine wins in 11 games, Seattle has tied the best start in franchise history (1984). “Everybody in the league and all the other players are watching on Monday nights,” says Seattle head coach MIKE HOLMGREN. “Monday Night Football is special.” It will be especially so this week, as the Eagles retire uniform No. 92 in tribute to the great REGGIE WHITE, who died last December 26 at the age of 43. White spent 1985-92 with the Eagles, posting 124.0 sacks and helping the club to five consecutive 10-win seasons from 1988-92. “Reggie was one of my favorite guys, a great person who lived by what he preached,” says Eagles head coach ANDY REID, an assistant under Holmgren in Green Bay when White and the 1996 Packers earned a victory in Super Bowl XXXI.

  • Playoff Races Heat up As Nfl Season Enters December
PLAYOFF RACES HEAT UP AS NFL SEASON ENTERS DECEMBER As the calendar turns to December, the NFL playoff picture is starting to take shape. With five weeks remaining in the regular season, there are currently 24 teams either in or within two games of a playoff spot. Over the past five seasons, the Carolina Panthers (19-5, .792) and Seattle Seahawks (19-5, .792) own the best record in the final month, which also includes regular-season games played in January. The New England Patriots (18-6, .750) lead the AFC. TEAM WINS LOSSES PCT. Carolina Panthers 19 5 .792 Seattle Seahawks 19 5 .792 New England Patriots 18 6 .750 Green Bay Packers 17 6 .739 Pittsburgh Steelers 17 6 .739 “The games in December are the most important regular-season games by far,” says NFL Network analyst and former NFL head coach STEVE MARIUCCI. “It’s extremely important to win in December and to make a run at the playoffs.” As the NFL season enters the final month, four teams are racing towards the finish line with winning streaks of at least five games – Dallas (10), Miami (six), the New York Giants (six) and Oakland (five). “The momentum is real for us right now,” says Cowboys tight end JASON WITTEN. “Our football team is a lot of fun. It’s neat to be a part of this and lead a great group of guys. Ten wins is good but they don’t hang any banners after 11 games. We have to continue to build here going into a critical stretch.” That critical stretch begins on Thursday night when Dallas visits Minnesota (8:25 PM ET, NBC/NFLN/Twitter).

Things started going bad for Denver :12 seconds into the game on the first play from scrimmage when the ball was hiked over the head of quar- terback Peyton Manning and into the end zone for a safety. It only got worse. After two first quarter Seattle field goals, the Seathawks scored twice in the second quarter on a 1-yard Marshawn Lynch run and a 69-yard interception return to lead 22-0 at the break. Then Seattle’s Percy Harvin returned the second half kickoff 87 yards for a TD in :12 seconds to stake the ‘Hawks to a 29-0 lead.
