North Carolina State Liberty Bowl Extra 1963 Season In Review COLLEGE PARK, MD., Sept. 22—SCOring the first three times with the ball, North Carolina State handed Maryland its first opening game loss under Tom Nugent, 34-14. Quarterback Jim Rossi, hitting on passes when they were needed to supplement a rushing attack that gained 246 yards, completed eight-of-ten passes for 94 yards and a touchdown While scoring on an 11-yard bootleg. An alert defense was headed by ends Don Montgomery and Ray Barlow, and tackle Bert Wilder. Dick Shiner ran and passed for Maryland’s two scores. “The big difference between the teams was the play of N. C. State’s ends,” said Nugent. State got its scores on the pin-point passing of Rossi, who connected on 13-of-15 attempts for 131 yards. Rossi hit on four straight passes to beat the first-half clock with Ray Barlow taking a four-yard pass for the score with 13 seconds left in the half. The Pack’s final touchdown came in the fourth quarter on an 84-yard drive, with Rossi connecting on six-of-seven passes. C., Oct. 5—A 77-yard touchdown pass from Jim Rossi to end Ray Barlow with 1:41 to go in the half gave North Carolina State a 7-3 advantage, which its defense made stand up to defeat Clemson in a key Atlantic Coast Conference ame. g Barlow, named Sports Illustrated “Lineman of the Week” for his play, recovered a fumble at the State 19' to halt one Tiger drive. A goal-line stand, after Clemson had picked up a first down at the two, saved the victory. Guard Bennett Williams made the key stop there. “That goal-line stand helped us,” said Earle Edwards. “They had us backed up badly most of the game. C., Oct. 12—North Carolina State won its fourth straight road game, defeating South Carolina in the rain, 18-6. Again the Wolfpack got strong defensive play, with end Don Montgomery getting State’s second score as he took a punt right off the foot of the Gamecock punter and ran 19 yards into the end zone. Jim Rossi’s 21-yard pass to Tony Koszarsky got the first score, while the Wolfpack’s final touchdown came on a 90-yard drive highlighted by Rossi’s 48-yard run and his 18- yard pass to Jimmy Guin which carried to the one from where fullback Pete Falzarano- took it over. C., Oct. 19—North Carolina knocked North Carolina State from the unbeaten ranks, as the Tar Heels pulled from a 10-10 halftime tie to defeat the Wolfpack 31-10, with three second-half touchdowns. Tony Koszarsky’s 74-yard runback with a pass interception with just 15 seconds left in the half had gotten State its half- time tie. But Carolina, before a record Kenan Stadium crowd of 45,500, took the second half kickoff in for a score and then recovered a Pack fumble on the first play succeeding their touchdown and scored again. “Carolina didn’t need the help we gave them. C., Oct. 26—Playing at home for the first time in six games, North Carolina State scored its first victory over Duke since 1946, handing the Blue Devils their first loss of the season, 21-7. Except for one long scoring pass, the State defense held the high scoring Duke attack under complete control. State built up a 14-0 halftime lead and then the defense arose to the situation With three interceptions, when it looked as if Duke might threaten. End Don Montgomery went in from 11 yards out with the second interception for the touchdown that wrapped it up. Bert Wilder, a terror all day on defense, was named Associated Press “Lineman of the Week” for his tremen— dous effort. State’s first score was set up by Mike Clark’s 55—yard run, with Tony Koszarsky scoring from six yards out; while Jim Rossi’s 55-yard twisting run and his 39-yard scoring pass to Joe Scarpati got a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the half. Ends Bob Faircloth and Don Montgomery blocked the punts for State. One resulted in a safety and the other set up Mike Clark’s four-yard touchdown. The bad pass from center set up the second touchdown, scored by fullback Pete Falzarano from one yard out. After their first-period touchdown, the Cavaliers went 40 minutes without a first down. C‘., Nov. 9—North Carolina State’s Home- coming was a success, with the VVolfpack ending Virginia Tech’s six-game winning streak, 13-7, and stretching its seasonal mark to seven wins in eight games. Joe Scarpati took in a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarter- back ]im Rossi in the first quarter and then halfback Tony Ko-szarsky recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for State’s 13 points. The Wolfpack held Tech quarterback Bob Schweickert in con- trol until he broke loose in the fourth quarter for a 59-yard run 4 which set up the touchdown he scored on a one-yard sweep.
