Population 2,021 Sanquhar is located in Dumfries and Galloway. It is a 16th century burgh and was a centre of the woollen trade with Sanquhar patterned knitted gloves being a key product. Mining and brickmaking became important in the 19th century but Gateside Colliery closed in the 1960s. Brocks had a fireworks factory in the town. Today school furniture (EME) and carpet tiles (Sanquhar Tile Services) are made. Carpets had been made in Sanquhar since the 1830s. Social and council housing are the norm in this type of small town.
