Unfortunately illness meant that our President, Air Marshal Cliff Spink and his wife Caroline were unable to join us this year. Cliff was going to tell those present about his Spitfire (pictured below). It is a Mk XVI with a clear view canopy. It was built in 1944 and is very much original, still with the same wings for example. It is powered by a Rolls Royce/Packard Merlin of 1600hp. The aircraft didn‟t see active service but did serve on several RAF squadrons including the RAuxAF. It is painted in the scheme of the 2nd Tactical Air Force which was worn between D Day and the advanced into Germany.

The Air League Newsletter Issue 2: March/April 2013 THE PRESIDENT WRITES Publication of the defence equipment programme – A Curate’s egg! or the Defence Industry, the Government’s view of its future equipment and support requirements is a compelling factor in assessing investment decisions and, ultimately, in determining the sustainability of the sector in the UK. The role of the domestic customerF as an ‘early adopter’ is also key to export sales. Hence, January’s long awaited publication of the NAO-audited Equipment Plan was eagerly anticipated. So what does it and the related NAO commentary tell us? First, it records that, pre-SDSR, the Coalition and the timescales for the introduction of Government faced a £74 billion deficit in the new capability. Equally, it provides a stark 10-year defence budget as a whole, of which reminder of the significance of support a significant proportion lay in the Equipment solutions and the need to continue the forensic Programme. Secondly, it confirms that, over 10 search for economies. But, the document years, the MOD expects to spend £159 billion does not provide specific guidance. To take on equipment and its support. Within this, one example very close to the sleigh: how will some £13 billion is held as risk contingency the UK maintain its medium-altitude, long- and £8 billion is unallocated headroom. This endurance UAV into the future? The current approach is aimed at eradicating permanently Reaper force was procured as an Urgent the over-heated programme aspirations of the Operational Requirement for Afghanistan. So, past. Thirdly, £86billion (54%) is allocated will Reaper be funded for inclusion in the core to support costs across the 10-year period, programme or will there be a new platform? In underlining the complexity of modern military the latter case, will this be procured off-the- platforms and re-emphasising the importance shelf, through an Anglo-French arrangement of through-life costs.

Combined Cadet Force Royal Air Force A Commissioning Aide Memoire for the Officer Cadre Version 1 “Where else could you learn to fly aerobatics, visit Royal Air Force Stations, tour foreign countries, play sports from local to international level, learn the skills to lead expeditions, become a target shooting marksman, gain your Duke of Edinburgh Awards, canoe through white water, assist your community, join a band, learn aviation subjects, go caving, parachute, climb, sail, ski...? These and much more are readily available to you as a member of the Air Cadet Organization.” Air Commodore Jon Chitty OBE. Introduction The school cadet organisation originates from 1859, when schools at Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Rossall, Felsted, Hurstpierpoint, Winchester and Tonbridge formed armed uniformed units as part of a national reserve to counter a perceived threat from abroad. By 1900, cadet units were established in over 100 schools across the country and in 1908, these units were re-titled the Officer Training Corps (OTC). In 1948, the OTC was renamed the Combined Cadet Force. The aim of the Combined Cadet Force is to provide a framework through which young people develop the qualities of team work, self-reliance, resourcefulness, leadership and responsibility. A weekly programme of military training is designed to give young people at King’s a chance to exercise responsibility and leadership, to provide them with knowledge of our defence forces, and to encourage those who might be interested in becoming officers of the Armed Services. Uniform members of the Combined Cadet Force will regularly stay on Royal Air Forces bases, therefore it is important that cadets are able to demonstrate an awareness of the structure and organisation of the Royal Air Force, its role in the defence of the United Kingdom and her interests and the operations in which the Royal Air Force are currently engaged.

RAF Football Association - E-Bulletin RAF FA CUP ‘THE KEITH CHRISTIE TROPHY’ AND RAF FA PLATE 19/20 UPDATE With the RAF Cup now in full swing, the second round produced some more exciting ties and saw some big names exit the competition. RAF Leeming’s away trip to Akrotiri was the eagerly anticipated tie of the round, however it proved to be a tough trip for the visitors as they were on the receiving end of a heavy 5-1 defeat. SAC Liam Thornton grabbed four of the goals, taking his overall tally to six and making him the current top scorer in the competition. RAF Brize Norton faced the long journey up to Lossiemouth and it proved to be successful as they ground out a 1-0 win with Sgt Dave Wanless scoring the all-important goal, Brize Norton will be hoping for a slightly shorter journey if they are drawn away in the next round. SAC Liam Wood scored his first two goals of the competition helping RAF Northolt to an away win at Wyton with RAF Coningsby also picking up a convincing away victory running out 4-0 winner against JFC Chicksands & RAF Henlow. RAF Honington who have a great history with the competition were knocked out at the hands of RAF Odiham thanks to a single goal from SAC Clarke Goulding. RAF FA E-Bulletin – RAF Cup Update Elsewhere, RAF Shawbury and RAF Marham both scored four goals each to take them through with victories over MOD St Athan and RAF Waddington respectively. RAF Boulmer also strolled through to the next round with an impressive 7-1 victory over RAF Cranwell.

No 74 (F) Tiger Squadron Association www.74squadron.org.uk Tiger News No 43 Compiled by Bob Cossey Association President AVM B L Robinson FRAeS FCMI Honorary Vice President Air Marshal Cliff Spink CB, CBE, FCMI, FRAeS Association Chairman Gp Capt Dick Northcote OBE BA Association Treasurer Rhod Smart Association Secretary Bob Cossey BA (Hons) Goodbye to Old Tigers Sadly we have to record the death of Denzl Beard on September 12th. He was 83 and was laid to rest at Torquay Crematorium. Denzl was with the Tigers at the time of their transition from Spitfires to Meteors and we published a few of his stories about experiences with the new jet fighter in previous editions of Tiger News. Those of you who were at Duxford last September at the RAF ACE event will have had the privilege of meeting Denzl who was there with his son Robert. We also say goodbye to Jack Thornton who died in February aged 91. Jack was a Tiger between July 1941 (when they were at Acklington) and April 1946 and was a Fitter IIE (Repair and Inspection.) This was Jack’s only posting and when he was demobbed in 1946 he had attained the rank of Corporal. And to Sqn Ldr Peter Pressley AFC who was with 74 from September 1951 to October 1953 at RAF Horsham St Faith, serving as Flying Officer and then Flight Lieutenant on the squadron. Our collective thoughts are with the families of Denzl, Jack and Peter. Churchill’s Cortege. You may recall from previous Tiger News` that Canadian Associate Member Colin Musson has been trying to trace the names of The Few chosen to accompany Churchill’s coffin at his funeral.
