In the Spotlight...

This year’s SFS school painting theme studies and celebrates the Pacific Coast, one of the most diverse and healthy coastal sea areas in the world. Initially displayed on campus in the Karen Goodkin Gallery, selections from the school-wide project are now on exhibition at the SF Public Library Portola Branch Community Room (380 Bacon St). In addition, a video exhibition of the poetry and music of music teacher James Harding with the Orff interns and 2nd Grade are available to experience through a QR code.

The paintings attempt to raise awareness of threatened or endangered marine life by inviting the viewer to be in contact with the specific sea life portrayed and consider conservation efforts. A call to action through “10 Things You Can Do To Save Our Seas” is included in the exhibition. Click here to read more about the exhibitions and our wonderful SFS artists!

Bake Sale for UndocuFund *This Thursday* Dear SFS Families:

The Middle School is holding a fundraiser for an organization called UndocuFund to support undocumented immigrants affected by the North Bay wildfires. As a part of it, we are holding a giant bake sale on Thursday, December 14, at the end of the school day. 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades will each have their own tables to sell the items brought in by their grade.

Elementary School families, we hope you will support our efforts and mark your calendar to pick up treats with your child/children at the end of school on December 14.

Middle School families, please send your child with baked or store-bought items to be sold and/or money to buy treats. Items containing nuts are not allowed.

The Middle School will also be taking donations through December 15, with a goal of raising approximately $20 per student. We have encouraged our classmates to do extra chores, babysit, or tap into their own piggy banks to donate to this cause.

The class that raises the most donations for UndocuFund will have a pizza party sponsored by Student Council. The money we raise together could greatly help families who lost everything in these fires.

Thank you for supporting our efforts.

Your Student Council Presidents, Brian Moore and Elijah Sandler

News from the Family Association

At the first Family Association Membership Meeting on November 15, we had a very productive brainstorming session where attendees shared ideas and thoughts as we imagined how, and in what ways, the FA could grow. The outcome was an exciting and extensive list of initiatives and events, including (to name a few): a community survey, a film series/ mini-film festival, a regular forum for families to learn more about what’s going on at SFS, community movie nights, a community block party/carnival, and more. We are grateful for the questions, thoughts, time, interest, enthusiasm, engagement, and support that so many of you have shared. Please reach out to the FA ([email protected]) if you’re interested in getting involved. There’s lots more to come in 2018!

We hope you can join us at our last Community Coffee of 2017 this Friday, December 15 from 9:00-10:00 am in the South Class Courtyard.

Common Sense Media Tip of the Week

When kids watch television, listen to music, or binge YouTube videos, they're passive consumers of digital media. While that's not necessarily a negative, it's even better to balance those passive experiences with more active, creative ones.

There are lots of ways kids can use media as makers, depending on their interests. For storytellers, there are apps and sites that let kids put together a virtual puppet show or piece together a personal narrative. Artists also have options and can use digital tools to add new dimensions to their creations. And kids who'd rather write the programs behind the apps can get into coding at any level from beginning to advanced. Really, no matter their interests, kids can find digital media that cater to their creativity.
