Byron Williams, ‘The Significance of 12 Years a Slave Winning Best Picture’, the Huffington Post Byron Williams, ‘The Significance of 12 Years a Slave Winning Best Picture’, The Huffington Post, March 12, 2014 In my book, 1963: The Year of Hope and Hostility, I examined the political and cultural events that continue to impact the nation, which included Sidney Poitier winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Homer Smith in Lilies of the Field. It marked the first time that a black person was awarded the prestigious honor, reflecting a glimpse of hope that blacks could be viewed with the equality and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution. Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American to win an Oscar for her supporting role as "Mammy" in Gone with the Wind. It is safe to conclude that no white actor could have played the role of "Mammy." But the significance Poitier's victory was not simply that a black man won, but also the type of character he played. In addition to Poitier, A-list actors such as Paul Newman, William Holden or Steve McQueen, could have very easily portrayed Homer Smith because it was a role based on being a good person and not dependent on one's race. Hollywood, like the rest of America, has a history marred by the stench of racism. From Birth of a Nation to countless demeaning stereotypical portrayals of blacks in movies, reflecting much of the prevailing ethos of the times. But on the 50th anniversary of Poitier's award, Hollywood reached another cultural milestone by acknowledging 12 Years a Slave as the Best Picture of 2013. Based on a true story, 12 Years a Slave, tells the narrative of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery. For 134 minutes, one is privy to the unspeakable horror that was the American institution of slavery. It is an unvarnished depiction of America's most tragic hour that rendered the majority of viewers feeling uneasy and relieved at its conclusion. Because it's Hollywood, it is difficult to know if the depiction of Northrup's painful journey was congruent with reality. What is not debatable, however, was the barbaric portrayal of the institution of slavery, which robbed victim and victimizer of their humanity. Still, a number of Americans, regardless of ethnicity, have avoided seeing 12 Years a Slave. I suspect for the same reasons many shunned Schindler's List in 1993 -- the prospects were too painful to be entertaining. Before we give Hollywood too much credit, it should be noted that 12 Years a Slavewas not produced by the usual suspects. Sony, Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Paramount, are not listed among its credits. This was a British-American production that was not received with open arms by Hollywood producers, reflective of the arrested development that continues to haunt America at-large. Perhaps the lack of exuberance was due more to financial considerations. Would 12 Years a Slave be a profitable enterprise? As of this writing the movie has grossed in excess of $158 million worldwide -- not bad for a film with an initial budget of $20 million, $58 million was revenue generated in the U.S. To put this in perspective the 2010 release of Yogi Bear is the 571st highest grossing movie in America with $100 million. 12 Years a Slave demonstrates that uncomfortable historical dramas about America's original sin can be profitable. Moreover, it serves as a counter narrative to the sophomoric rebuttals on race such as "get over it." How can one get over something that the impact remains largely unexamined stored conveniently in the basement of American history? Slavery is as important to the American narrative as the Constitution. Without an initial compromise on slavery, there would not have been a United States, as we know it today, a Civil War, the need for the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, nor a Civil Rights Movement; all of which have curiously combined to make America better. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/byron-williams/the-significance-of-12-ye_b_4952564.html .

His critically-acclaimed directorial debut, Hunger, won the Camera d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. He followed that up with the incendiary offering Shame, a well- received, thought-provoking drama about addiction and secrecy in the modern world. In 1996, McQueen was the recipient of an ICA Futures Award. A couple of years later, he won a DAAD artist’s scholarship to Berlin. Besides exhibiting at the ICA and at the Kunsthalle in Zürich, he also won the coveted Turner Prize. He has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Documenta, and at the 53rd Venice Biennale as a representative of Great Britain. His artwork can be found in museum collections around the world like the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou. In 2003, he was appointed Official War Artist for the Iraq War by the Imperial War Museum and he subsequently produced the poignant and controversial project Queen and Country commemorating the deaths of British soldiers who perished in the conflict by presenting their portraits as a sheet of stamps. This was one of the original cars used in the classic Steve McQueen film "Bullitt," a film that defined "cool" for a generation of Americans. McQueen was Hollywood's "King of Cool" for a reason. Steve McQueen was not cool because he drove the Bullitt car. The Bullitt car was cool because Steve McQueen drove it. At the time, Steve McQueen was the number-one movie star in the world, and he is still used as a point of reference for masculinity and "coolness" to this day. He was (and is) the definition of an American icon. Yet, until late in his life he struggled to find meaning in life, and he suffered because of it. It might have been because he was born into a home of an alcoholic mother and a father that left him early in life, but eventually he found himself on the wrong side of the law more than once. He was arrested several times as a teen and sent to truancy homes for rebellious kids. He served in the Marine Corps, where he demonstrated both valor and rebellion.

After college I returned to work with the doctor I had worked for during summer vacations, but started spending more and more time hanging out at the American Film Institute, where my brother Albert (now Alex) was enrolled, attending seminars and screenings and crewing for student films, until the doctor finally suggested I seemed more interested in movies than medicine and maybe I should get that out of my system... I had seen a TV show about Stephen Hawking and was fascinated by the idea that one day he might figure out the unified field theory but, due to his condition, wouldn't be able to communicate it to anyone. This suggested he needed someone to mentor, who could understand him, and this in turn suggested the character of a troubled kid who was was too smart for his environment. When I was a reader, I learned that executives almost never read anything themselves, they read "coverage', the 2 or 3 pages we readers write to summarize scripts ‐‐ and even the 15‐ or 20‐page "treatments" writers submit for script proposals.
