A Wars of the Roses Primer with much conjecture.....By M.JacobsenJacobb Abbot wrote non-fiction geared towards young adults and has a rather extensive British-history series of books, of which Margaret of Anjou is a part. Abbott's writing is highly readable...easy to follow and make sense of the very convoluted personalities in Margaret's story. In what I am fairly certain was an intent to draw the interest of a young adult audience, Abbott presupposes too much about the historical figures he writes about. Frequently, for example, he tells us what a character was thinking (ie, their motivations) at the time, something that it is impossible for any historian to know. Additionally, Abbott freely includes many unsubstantiated rumors of the times, often presenting them as if they were cold, hard facts. Again, I'm certain he does this to engage his young audience's attention, but for those who want facts about Margaret of Anjou, this is not the book for you. What I might suggest, however, is that you give this quick read a go in order to get a firm idea of who the major players were and what their relationships to each other entailed. Then go off in search of a more fact-based, scholarly work to learn more. If treated as a primer for names and dates only, Abbott's work might serve you well.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Queen Consort to King Henry VIBy BonnieI have been fascinated with Margaret of Anjou for awhile. She lived 1430 to 1482 . A key figure in the Wars of The Roses. Her husband, King Henry VI, suffered serious bouts of mental illness during much of his life. Queen Margaret was a very determined woman, taking over the tasks of war in her husbands name. She suffered greatly. Her only child and son, Prince Edward was captured by the Yorkists and killed April 5, 1471. The next month King Henry VI was killed as well. Broke, dispirited and disheartened years later she was allowed to return to Anjou where she died. She was a woman of determination and ability. Her story is worth reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a high school level readBy L M PistorI admit this book tells me more than I knew about Margaret of Anjou. The 19th century author wrote many juvenile books. This book is about a high school level read.It is short, and has no index, no source citations, and no bibliography.
