Mary Queen of Scots About the AuthorJacob Abbott (1803–1879) was an American writer of children's books. A licensed minister, his career outside of writing included serving as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Amherst College, founding the Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston in 1829, and founding (with his brothers) Abbott's Institute and the Mount Vernon School for Boys. Jacob Abbott was a prolific author, writing juvenile fiction, brief histories, biographies, religious books for the general reader, and a few works in popular science. His Rollo Books, such as Rollo at Work, Rollo at Play, Rollo in Europe, etc., are the best known of his writings, having as their chief characters a representative boy and his associates. Other works of note include Lucy Books, Jonas Books, Harper's Story Books, Marco Paul, Gay Family, and Juno Books. His brothers, John Stevens Cabot Abbott and Gorham Dummer Abbott, were also authors. His sons, Benjamin Vaughan Abbott, Austin Abbott, both eminent lawyers, Lyman Abbott, and Edward Abbott, a clergyman, were also well-known authors. The development of the moral sentiments in the human heart, in early life,—and every thing in fact which relates to the formation of character,—is determined in a far greater degree by sympathy, and by the influence of example, than by formal precepts and didactic instruction. If a boy hears his father speaking kindly to a robin in the spring,—welcoming its coming and offering it food,—there arises at once in his own mind, a feeling of kindness toward the bird, and toward all the animal creation, which is produced by a sort of sympathetic action, a power somewhat similar to what in physical philosophy is called induction. On the other hand, if the father, instead of feeding the bird, goes eagerly for a gun, in order that he may shoot it, the boy will sympathize in that desire, and growing up under such an influence, there will be gradually formed within him, through the mysterious tendency of the youthful heart to vibrate in unison with hearts that are near, a disposition to kill and destroy all helpless beings that come within his power. There is no need of any formal instruction in either case. Of a thousand children brought up under the former of the above- described influences, nearly every one, when he sees a bird, will wish to go and get crumbs to feed it, while in the latter case, nearly every one will just as certainly look for a stone.

D.D. PREFATORY NOTE THE substance of the following sketch was first pre sented to the congregation of St. James's, Cambridge, in four discourses, on the Sunday mornings of Advent; i,904. A number of circumstances combined to invest that year with a distinctive anniversary character. On the evening of Christmas Day, I 904; it would be just forty years since the first service of St. James's Mission was held in Atwill's Hall. On the evening of Saturday, the 31st of December, I 904, it would be just forty years to the day of the 'Yeek, as well as the day of the month, since·the rector came to live in Cambridge, taking up his pastoral work in another quar ter of the city, in another denominational relation. On the 22nd of December, 1904, it would be just twenty-five years since canonically -a..i:id by title he became rector of the Parish. On the 8th of January, I 904, it was just twenty-five years since his ordination to the Diaconate. For personal reasons, there£ore, as well as parochial, the year I 904 had an anniversary character for both people and pastor. And the four commemorative discourses were so tim_ed that their conclusion was made coincident with the formal opening of the " Edw~rd Abbott Porch," at the west end of the Church, which the appreciative affection of the Parish had caused to be erected during the year as a me morial of the ministry of their fourth rector.

Abbott's writing is highly readable...easy to follow and make sense of the very convoluted personalities in Margaret's story.In what I am fairly certain was an intent to draw the interest of a young adult audience, Abbott presupposes too much about the historical figures he writes about. Frequently, for example, he tells us what a character was thinking (ie, their motivations) at the time, something that it is impossible for any historian to know. Additionally, Abbott freely includes many unsubstantiated rumors of the times, often presenting them as if they were cold, hard facts. Again, I'm certain he does this to engage his young audience's attention, but for those who want facts about Margaret of Anjou, this is not the book for you.What I might suggest, however, is that you give this quick read a go in order to get a firm idea of who the major players were and what their relationships to each other entailed.

The basic outlines of the story of the founding of New York Law School are a well known part of the history of American legal education. Angered by the abandonment of the "Dwight Method"' of legal education in favor of the Harvard case method,2 the faculty of the Columbia Law School and many of its students withdrew en masse to the new institution. Less well known is the struggle to establish the new school as a totally independent institution; a story told for the first time in James Wooten's article appearing in this issue of the New York Law School Law Review. It is a story of conflict between government control and the desire to be let alone; between the desire to close legal education to a privileged few and to keep it open to all those who wished to train themselves for the bar in an academic setting.

It is a word used in various forms by the different tribes and nations that from time immemorial have inhabited Central Asia, and has been applied to a great number of potentates and rulers that have from time to time arisen among them. Genghis Khan was the greatest of these princes. He was, in fact, one of the most renowned conquerors whose exploits history records. As in all other cases occurring in the series of histories to which this work belongs, where the events narrated took place at such a period or in such a part of the world that positively reliable and authentic information in respect to them can now no longer be obtained, the author is not responsible for the actual truth of the narrative which he offers, but only for the honesty and fidelity with which he has compiled it from the best sources of information now within reach. BEGINNINGS Early in March of 1891, Professor George Chase of Columbia College School of Law addressed a brief letter to his friend, Melvil Dewey, in which he announced his intention to found a law school.' This idea, he told Dewey, had taken shape in the wake of recent events at Columbia. Seth Low, the newly elected President of Columbia, perceived the law school as an impediment to his goal of turning the college into a university. Low's decision to impose a series of curricular reforms at the law school over the objections of its faculty had given rise to "a row of large dimensions."2 Indeed, only two days before Chase wrote Dewey, Chase and his colleague, Robert Petty, had resigned in protest of Low's actions.' In the interim between his resignation and his letter to Dewey, Chase had been offered the deanship of the Law School of the University of the City of New York (NYU).4 The actions of Low and the Columbia Trustees, however, had made him wary of another position with a university affiliation.
