Wednesday August 12, 2015 NEW FEATURE FROM SCOTT HICKS LEADS THE BEST OF AUSTRALIAN FILM AT ADELAIDE FILM FESTIVAL 2015 HIGHLIGHTS ANNOUNCED TODAY A premiere feature documentary from Academy Award-winning director Scott Hicks, a new Australian film starring Anthony LaPaglia, Justine Clarke and John Clarke, directorial feature debuts from Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Stephen Page and Windmill Theatre Company’s Rosemary Myers and the red carpet screening of Jocelyn Moorhouse’s anticipated Australian film The Dressmaker are just some of the highlights that will feature at this year’s Adelaide Film Festival. Festival Creative Director Amanda Duthie today announced key highlights, ahead of the full program reveal next month and was thrilled to announce that Hicks’ documentary Highly Strung will have its world premiere and open the Festival, when it returns to Adelaide October 15-25. Highly Strung will screen at Her Majesty’s Theatre with a red carpet event, with Hicks in attendance. It joins the Adelaide-made dramedy feature A Month of Sundays, starring LaPaglia and directed by Matt Saville; Spear, a new work from Bangarra’s Stephen Page; Girl Asleep, filmed in Adelaide from director Rosemary Myers and featuring rising star Tilda Cobham-Hervey; and the Sundance Film Festival hit, Sam Klemke’s Time Machine, from Adelaide director Matthew Bate. Ms Duthie was also pleased to announce the Adelaide Film Festival red carpet screening of The Dressmaker, from director Jocelyn Moorhouse, and starring Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Adelaide’s Sarah Snook – on October 16, at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Historic Australian contingent at Sundance 2019 Thursday 29 November 2018: Six Australian feature films will screen at the Sundance Film Festival, surpassing the record set in 1997 of five features. Animals, I Am Mother, Judy and Punch, Little Monsters and Top End Wedding will all make their World Premieres at the Utah-based festival. The Nightingale will make its North American Premiere, after taking home the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Sundance has a history of launching Australian works that go on to be hits including Animal Kingdom in 2010 (World Cinema Jury Prize), Wolf Creek in 2005, Shine in 1996 and more recently documentary Casting JonBenet (2017) and FX television series Mr Inbetween (2018). The festival is particularly important for introducing Australian creatives to the US market. “The six films selected by Sundance display the array of stories Australians now tell, and the demand for our screen content internationally,” said Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason. “From quintessentially Australian tales Top End Wedding and The Nightingale, to Australian takes on sci-fi and dark comedy I Am Mother and Little Monsters, to international stories Animals and Judy and Punch - this is an incredible slate of premieres.” “The fact that all the films revolve around central female characters, and half of the films are directed by women, is a milestone for the Australian industry. FlickerLab 2020 A ONE-DAY JOURNEY FROM SHORTS TO FEATURES PRESENTED BY SAE CREATIVE MEDIA INSTITUTE Friday 17th January 10am – 5pm SESSION 1: FROM IDEA TO PAGE 10.00am – 11.30am Everyone will tell you a good script is an essential ingredient for any good film. Our panel of experienced screenwriters will discuss turning a good idea into a good script, looking in detail at development, collaboration and script editing. They will share their insights about their own transitions from independent shorts to lauded feature films. Discussions will also include observations about writing for some of television’s most successful and acclaimed dramas. This valuable session is a must for all budding screenwriters and filmmakers looking to develop and write scripts. WRITER’S PANEL moderated by BOBBY ROMIA (Create NSW) with Andrew Knight and Imogen McCluskey. ANDREW KNIGHT A recipient of the ACCTA Longford Lyell Award, Andrew recently co-wrote Ride Like A Girl with Elise McCredie. He won an AACTA Best Screenplay award with Robert Schenkkan, for Hacksaw Ridge, co-wrote AWGIE-Award nominated Ali’s Wedding with Osamah Sami, and AWGIE Award winning The Water Diviner with Andrew Anastasios. Television credits include Rake (AWGIE nom), Jack Irish (AWGIE nom), The Kettering Incident, The Broken Shore, After the Deluge, and SeaChange. Andrew has written, produced, co-created or executive-produced over 1000 hours of TV – co-founding Artist Services in 1989 and serving as Creative Director. He has a busy slate of local and international projects in development. IMOGEN MCCLUSKEY Imogen is a writer and director based between Brisbane and Sydney. -
