A Trip to Gander , Canada

In the immediate aftermath of the September 11th attacks, our Canadian neighbors sprang into action to help clear American airspace of any other potentially dangerous flights.

The action was known as Operation Yellow Ribbon, and in those uncertain first hours after the attacks, it was hugely helpful. The mission also made the tiny town of Gander world August 19 - August 24, 2019 famous for its hospitality. Monday to Saturday

On Monday, August 19, 2019 we will depart for St. John’s, Newfoundland from the Cleveland Hopkins Airport. On arrival we will meet the tour manager that will be with us throughout the trip introducing us to the sights of Newfoundland and the residents of Gander. On Tuesday after an overnight stay in St. John’s we will start out fresh traveling through scenic towns of the area, on our way to Gander, to learn about what happened in Gander on September 11th and the days that followed.

During our Newfoundland trip you will get to meet the Islanders, hear their stories and be met by a key member from the 9/11 team who will speak to the group as a prelude to the touring of the Gander area on Wednesday. The personal perspectives on how this small town reacted to such a crisis is inspiring, and a great reminder of how warm and wonderful humans can be.

As you travel from the airport where it all started, to the Town Hall and to the community center, and listen to the struggles and victories of that day, you will also meet some of these wonderful neighbors and hear their stories of the “plane people”. They may even join us for dinner, if circumstances allow!

The Broadway phenomenon comes to life in Gander and Newfoundland. Visit with those decent quirky people who cared so well for our stranded citizens after 9/11. From colorful St. John's to UNESCO sites, whales, puffin and icebergs, this tour will leave you breathless. Our Newfoundland travels will also allow us to spend some time going through - where lush boreal forests meet tranquil, sheltered inlets of the Atlantic, the Kitiwake Coast – unspoiled nature just “beyond your imagination” and the coastal town of Musgrave Harbour where you will travel through a wilderness of tall trees, blue lakes and crystal-clear streams. The pristine landscape is undeniable. Here and there you will even find white sandy beaches that stretch on forever.

Thursday on our return trip from Gander going back to St. John’s, your tour manager will point out some of the magnificent scenery. Breaks and a lunch stop will be included so that your arrival to St. John’s will be about 2 pm allowing us time to enjoy a city tour, featuring the Victorian architecture of the downtown area, the busy modern waterfront, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the Confederation Building, and the panoramic view from Signal Hill.

St. John’s is an intriguing old seaport, 's oldest city and Newfoundland's capital. It boasts a stunning location in the granite cliffs and slopes of the Avalon Peninsula.

Friday at Witless Bay, enjoy a Witless Bay Ecological Reserve boat tour to search for puffins and other seabirds. It’s the largest puffin colony in North America. Take in the breath-taking scenery and incredible marine wildlife with whales, icebergs, puffins, and a variety of bird species. It happens to be a wonderful spot along Iceberg Alley, though you may not see the icebergs this time of year. You will visit , the most easterly point in North America and the quaint fishing village of Bulls Bay.

Back in St. John’s you will visit the neighborhood – an old fishing village and a lovely area to discover magnificent ocean views. It is here you will also find Newfoundland’s largest craft brewery, Quidi Vidi Brewing Co, a perfect spot for a beer-tasting! (Quidi Vidi is locally pronounced Kiddy Viddy)

Friday evening your farewell dinner will be at the Gypsy Tea Room – tucked away in the historic Murray Premises. Focusing on the freshest seafood available and prime cuts of meat, the elegant service and wonderful cuisine are a delightful farewell to Newfoundland.

Saturday we say Farewell with memories we will keep forever, as we transfer to St. John’s airport for our journey home.

Experience the immensely heart-warming reaction to a difficult situation. To say the locals bent over backwards for their surprise guests would be a massive understatement. They greeted their guests with bagged lunches, opened their schools and large building as shelters, and when they were full, opened their homes. Included in this Special Package
