The soul of India lives in its villages, 60 percent of the population still lives in villages of India ! Our route will be mostly though the forests that serves as a corridor for Tigers to disperse. www.royalexpeditions.com Pench / Kanha Forest Corridor The corridor facilitates tiger dispersal between Kanha and Pench tiger reserves. It covers an area of 16,000 sq km and acts as a refuge for tigers and several other mammals such as wild dogs, sloth bear, leopard, hyena, jackal, and sambar to name a few. The corridor also harbours gaur and is known to facilitate their movement. We will also get to learn about work been done by conservation organizations like WWF-India, to save this critical landscape. The corridor is part of the Satpuda Maikal Landscape Tiger Conservation Program. The Satpura–Maikal landscape is classified as a global-priority Tiger Conservation Landscape (TCL) due to its potential for providing sufficient habitat that will allow the long-term preservation of tiger population. It has been found that the tiger meta-population in the Satpura–Maikal landscape have high genetic variation and very low genetic subdivision. We will learn about cattle compensation programme. Our visit will spread awareness among local communities regarding wildlife conservation and shrinking corridors. The Kanha-Pench forest corridor harbours around 120 tigers along with several important floral and faunal assemblages. The landscape also supports diverse land use, forest protection regimes and traditional forest dwelling tribal communities. The wildlife in the corridor forest are predominantly nocturnal by nature and avoid human presence and is safe to cycle through. Why Central India ? The Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is a very safe region and is endowed with rich and diverse forest resources. Lying between lat. 21°04'N and long. 74°02' and 82°49' E, it is a reservoir of biodiversity. The forest area of the state is 95,221 km² constituting 31% of the geographical area of the state and 12.44% of the forest area of India. This is the area written about in “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling in 1895. Cycling in these forests will bring alive the stories. The Jungle Book, because of its moral tone, came to be used as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts, a junior element of the Scouting movement. The Jungle Book characters which come alive during the cycling expeditions are: Mowgli — Main character, the young jungle boy; Father Wolf — The Father Wolf who raised Mowgli as his own cub ; Raksha — The Mother wolf who raised Mowgli as her own cub ; Grey brother — One of Mother and Father Wolf's cubs ; Hathi — An Indian Elephant ; Bagheera — A melanistic (black) panther ; Baloo— A Sloth Bear ; www.royalexpeditions.com Shere Khan; The Royal Bengal Tiger ; Kaa — Indian Python ; Akela — An Indian Wolf ; Tabaqui — A Golden Jackal ; Chil — A kite ; Mor — An Indian Peafowl ; Mang — A Bat ; The Bandar log — A tribe of monkeys ; Rikki-Tikki-Tavi — An Indian Mongoose ; Darzee — A tailorbird ; Chuchundra — A Muskrat ; Nag — A male King cobra ; Nagaina — A female King cobra. Karait - A Common Krait. Madhya Pradesh is dominated by tribal groups. The differences in the tribal community, spread over various parts of the state, is clearly seen not only on the basis of their heredity, lifestyle and cultural traditions, but also from their social, economic structure, religious beliefs and their language and speech. Due to the different linguistic, cultural and geographical environment, and its peculiar complications, the diverse tribal world of Madhya Pradesh has been largely untouched by the mainstream of development in other parts of India. www.royalexpeditions.com Outline Itinerary Day 1 Arrival Delhi Day 2 Delhi / Nagpur / Pench - Fly + Drive + Cycle o/n Pench Tree Lodge Day 3 Pench – Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Cycling. Due to distances between National Parks, we will actually travel few hours on Cycle on the smaller country roads and with the remaining journey by Van / Jeep.
