Email: [email protected] Received 28 April 2010; accepted 7 September 2010 Abstract: The population and habitat preferences of the Grey Francolin Francolinus pondicerianus and Black Francolin Francolinus francolinus were studied in three different habitats in Lehri Nature Park, Jhelum, Pakistan. The populations of the two species were estimated using direct (Line transect method) and indirect methods (“calls” of the two species). Data were collected monthly from September 2008 to July 2009. The results showed average population densities of 0.47±0.09/ha and 0.06±0.01/ha for Grey and Black Francolin, respectively. A noticeably higher population was found in the morning compared to that of the evening. Maximum densities at both morning and evening were found in October 2008 with significant differences (P<0.01). Maximum seasonal populations were recorded during autumn 2008 - 0.76±0.26/ha and 0.07±0.02/ha for Grey and Black Francolins, respectively. For an assessment of the habitat preferences of the two species, relative density, relative frequency and relative dominance were calculated for trees, shrubs and herbs species in the three selected habitats. -

Wayne5* Protection of populations comprising admixed genomes is a challenge under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which is regarded as the most powerful species protection legislation ever passed in the United States but lacks specific provisions for hybrids. The eastern wolf is a newly recognized wolf-like species that is highly admixed and inhabits the Great Lakes and eastern United States, a region previously thought to be included in the geographic Downloaded from range of only the gray wolf. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has argued that the presence of the eastern wolf, rather than the gray wolf, in this area is grounds for removing ESA protection (delisting) from the gray wolf across its geographic range. In contrast, the red wolf from the southeastern United States was one of the first species pro- tected under the ESA and was protected despite admixture with coyotes. We use whole-genome sequence data to demonstrate a lack of unique ancestry in eastern and red wolves that would not be expected if they represented long divergent North American lineages. -

Population Biology of Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus) with Reference to Lal Suhanra National Park, Pakistan* Waseem Ahmad Khan1 and Afsar Mian2 1Animal Ecology Laboratory, Islamabad Model Postgraduate College, H-8, Islamabad 2Bioresource Research Centre, 34, Bazaar Road, G-6/4, Islamabad, Pakistan Abstract.- Transect data collected on black francolin, known as black partridge in Pakistan and India, (Francolinus francolinus) population from Lal Suhanra National Park (south Punjab, Pakistan) between 1993 and 2004 suggested that the species was present in only 6/23 stands (mainly in irrigated plantation with reed vegetation) with an average density of 8.40±1.39/km²; varying between 3.44±0.88 and 13.28±2.25/km2 in different stands. Densities were lower during winter (November–March, minimum in February) and maximum during summer (May- July), explained on population recruitment cycle, mortality and local movements. Densities were not significantly different between study years, yet these were generally lower during drought years compared to better rainfall years. Sex ratio (male/ female = 1.31) was skewed towards males. There were 0.32±0.09 young/adult female and 0.14±0.03 young/adult birds, while 2/6 stands had no young, representing non-breeding stands. Young were not observed or could not be identified separately during October-February, and the young/adult ratio was the highest in August. Dispersion index (variance/mean) of 0.60±0.09 suggests random-uniform dispersion. Group size averaged at 1.88±0.15 birds/group (range 1-5), majority of individuals appeared as singles (52.39%). -

This subspecies represents the southern most limit of the range of wolf distribution in the world. The distribution range of the Canis lupus pallipes extends from Israel, Syria, southern Iraq, southern Iran, Kuwait in the Middle East to southern Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. Wolf as well as Blackbuck Antelope cervicapra are classified as endangered species in the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act. 1972. The range of these species has constricted mainly because of shooting and destruction of grasslands. Except for preliminary status surveys in India, there is lack of infomnation with regard to wolf behaviour, dynamics, natality, mortality, food supply and livestock depredation which results in wolf-man conflict. During the first two decades of independence, the Blackbuck which was abundant all over the Indian plains but especially in the Deccan, was hunted out in most of its range. However, since the enactment of Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, there has been resurgence of Blackbuck populations in certain areas such as Nannaj. The Blackbuck being a major natural prey of the wolf, the latter has also increased or stabilized in some areas. However, wolf is a regular predator of livestock, which brings It In direct conflict with humans which needs special emphasis. -
