St. Joseph Parish / Old Mission San José Fremont, California ~ June 12, 2021 Image courtesy of Washington Township Museum of Local History The Founding of “La Mision del Gloriosisimo Patriarca San Jose” Very early in the morning, the first day of the week, June 11, 1797, the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, the reverend Fathers, the Spanish soldiers, and the Loreto Indians assembled for the dedicatory ceremony. The unusual stir in the camp, the ringing of the bell, the firing of the muskets, the smoke of the incense, the lighting of the Mass candles, the sight of the beautiful vestments of the priests – all attracted groups of [Indians] to the scene. Father Lasuen began the ceremony. Leading the way to the large cross lying on the ground, the soldiers raised it aloft, thus setting up the symbol of Christianity. With correct military ceremonial the royal flag of Spain was then raised to the top of a tree as the symbol of their country, a detail of soldiers fired the customary number of volleys. Father Lasuen then approached the flower-decked chancel to begin the High Mass in nature’s own beautiful temple. The beauty of the scene, and the significance of the occasion inspired the Very Reverend Father Lasuen to deliver a fervent sermon and [sing the prayers] with a thrill of gladness which was caught up in the vocal renditions of the soldiers and Christian Indians forming the choir.

PARISH PRAYER - All Oh Lord, You are the Potter, we are the clay. Design us to reflect your glory as we rebuild your Church. Fashion our ears to hear new ideas. Shape our hearts to appreciate others’ creativity and insight. Form our eyes to see Jesus in each other. Mold our community to be united in our pilgrimage. Help us build a place of refuge, a holy temple, with Jesus as the cornerstone. May we work together with love and care ever mindful that the spirit, not the structure is the essence of the design. May we come together as a family of one, to be guided by the Father, Holy Spirit and Son. Amen.
