SURFING FOR PUNKS: THE INTERNET AND THE PUNK SUBCULTURE IN NEW JERSEY by AARON ROBERT FURGASON A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Communication, Information and Library Studies written under the direction of Professor Linda Steiner And approved by ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2008 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION SURFING FOR PUNKS: THE INTERNET AND THE PUNK SUBCULTURE IN NEW JERSEY BY AARON ROBERT FURGASON Dissertation Director Professor Linda Steiner This study examines the influence of the Internet on the punk subculture in New Jersey. Previous research by academics on the effect of the Internet on popular music has centered on the impact of Napster and peer-to-peer networks on the distribution of recordings (Alexander, 2002; Ayres & Williams, 2004; Bishop, 2004; Daniel & Klimis, 1999; Fox, 2004; Mardesich, 1999; & Oberholzer & Strumpf, 2004). However, unexamined is the influence of the Internet on a specific music subculture, punk. This is important because the subculture is occupied mainly by youth engaged with both the Internet and punk music. The Internet's influence on the punk subculture is a particularly important area of study because the Internet alters how participants in the subculture (punk fans, bands and independent labels) communicate with one another, as well as changes the distribution of punk artifacts and information. ii Central to this study is the history of the major labels' dominance over the distribution and promotion of punk music, a domination examined via critical political economy theory.

OMgoddess Newsletter Emerging Us to Our Communities and Each Other through Wellness in All Forms PURE TOMS RIVER YOGA AUGUST 2020 It is August Friends! It is National Happiness Happens Month and International Peace Month. Have you realized there is national month, week, or day for pretty much anything? August we have days ranging from National Respect for Parents Day to National Underwear Day to National Wiggle Your Toes Day. Not Joking on those; Look it Up. Getting back to National Happiness Happens Month. What Makes you Happy? We have a whole month honoring this and how happiness is limitless and contagious. By sharing your joy brings joy to those around you. Have you every walked into a room and you can just feel the tension and automatically freeze up knowing something is wrong? Then think about walking into your yoga studio or your happy place- your inner light just clicks on! So how is it that August became National Happiness Happens Month? The Secret Society of Happy People was founded in 1998 to provide a voice for people who are happy and want to express it without others raining on their parade. August 8, 1999 was founded as Admit Your Happy Day but the members of this society wanted it to linger on longer and then renamed the entire month. I want to be part of this secret society or can we copy it and make our own calling it the OmGoddess Clubhouse of Happy People? Happiness is a choice and this month we should start by doing something for yourself- happiness starts from within! Then Recognize each day what makes you happy? It is Summer at the Jersey Shore during a pandemic, but I am sure we have so much happiness around us.

This is Not Photography SPEMA regional conference 10/18-20/2013 Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, Asbury Park, New Jersey As SPE, the Society for Photographic Education, celebrates its 50th year we are faced with the question, “What is photography?” In an age where everyone carries a phone in their pocket and considers themselves a photographer, Instagram and Twitter provide more up-to-date imagery than newspapers and appropriation of photographs has become commonplace, how do we define photography and photographers? When we retouch, manipulate and composite photographs into imagery that bares little to no resemblance to the original, are we allowed to still call it a photograph? Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2011 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project would not have been possible without the help and support of so many wonderful people. I’ll never forget the day when David Levee suggested I check out a Nekromantix show in Austin, TX. During the show, as I watched Kim Nekroman lick the Jägermeister off his coffin bass while thudding away at the mutant rockabilly- punk hybrid creation with ridiculous speed, I knew then and there that psychobilly would have to be the subject of my doctoral research. I did not know at the time that I would come to meet some of the most remarkable people in my life as a result of engaging in this research. I am very grateful to the hundreds of musicians, fans, and retro-philes that shared their interests, opinions, stories, and time with me. There are too many to list here, so please know that each and every one made a significant impact on me and contributed to this product.

  • Asbury Park, Where the Boss Cut His Teeth, Has Been Rocking for 50 Years
Asbury Park, where the Boss cut his teeth, has been rocking for 50 years. It’s not about to turn down the volume, says Nick Rufford Nick Rufford Published: 11 May 2014 We built this city on rock’n’roll: Springsteen, Asbury Park’s most famous son (Greg Allen/Rex) Head out of New York City through the Holland Tunnel, south on the 95 and east on the 33, and the gritty landscape gives way to beach bars, boardwalks and the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. This is the north Jersey shore, a one-time playground for New Yorkers who escaped here from the traffic and summer heat — before they discovered package holidays in Florida and Hawaii. It’s also one of the birthplaces of American music. The strip of coastal towns is arguably to rock what Nashville is to country music and New Orleans is to jazz. You can’t cross the street on the 14-mile strip of cafes, restaurants and beachfront homes that runs from Long Branch to Manasquan without tripping over a gem of rock history. U2, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones all played some of their first American concerts here. At the risk of giving away my age, I’m going to venture that this is every bit as important as a pilgrimage to the Cavern Club. I came, to be honest, half hoping to bump into Bruce Springsteen, who honed his songwriting skills in the seaside bars of Asbury Park, the epicentre of the strip. Now there are signs that the Shore’s glory days may be about to return.
