How serious or advanced shooter you are will of course aff ect almost unlimited number of options. your choice. But let’s start with our fi rst piece of advice:

WHEN THE SHOOTING JACKET IS NEW Even a very well fi tting jacket usually feels too small when new & stiff . Always mount all the buttons and allow for enough ’breaking in’ time with a new jacket or a pair of pants. Th e only way to get the right feeling in a new jacket is in the shooting position and with the buttons mounted! It is normal not to get ‘ISSF 70mm overlap’ before the jacket is broken in. Th e seams need to be stretched out and the stiff material must form around your body. Th is process will inevitably take some time over several training sessions and should be done before a match. It must be done both with standard sizes and made to measure jackets and pants. Here Hanna Etula shows how to not test a jacket, left, and how to do it correctly on the right. With arms hanging down and buttons open even her own jacket, which she used in the Olympics, seems to be too small.

WHAT IS ISSF SHOOTING JACKET OVERLAP? According to ISSF (International Sport Shooting Federation) rule 7.4.7.2: ‘...the jacket must be capable of being overlapped beyond the normal closure by at least 70 mm, measured from the centre of the button to the outside edge of the button hole’.

NOT SHOOTING ISSF MATCHES? If you do not compete in matches where ISSF rules are applied this rule does not concern you at all. Th e ISSF rules are made for competitions where World Records can be made. To use these rather complicated and strict rules in small competitions is not always very wise. We want to see more shooters on our shooting ranges, not to keep anyone out, do we...?

ABOUT SHOOTING WEAR TECHNIQUE

DO I NEED MADE TO MEASURE (MTM) OR IS A STANDARD SIZE GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME? On the back cover you nd our chart for standard sizes. With adjustable buttons the cir- cumference of a jacket can be adjusted. How much depends on your own requirements. Accepting a standard size usually means ac- cepting that you will have to adjust the t with the buttons to at least some extent. How many cm extra overlap or how tight/loose a jacket you nd acceptable depends on: - If you compete under ISSF rules (see explanation on page 2) and - What you accept yourself. A beginning or a hobby shooter may accept a less well tting jacket. A shooter going for an International Team will not accept anything which may have a negative effect on the score.
