Kinesiology 43(2011) 1:82-90 PERSPECTIVES OF THE SPORT-ORIENTED PUBLIC IN SLOVENIA ON EXTREME SPORTS Samo Rauter and Mojca Doupona Topič University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Sport, Ljubljana, Slovenia Original scientific paper UDC 796.61(035) (497.4) Abstract: The purpose of the research was to determine the perspectives of the sport-oriented people regarding the participation of a continuously increasing number of athletes in extreme sports. At the forefront, there is the recognition of the reasons why people actively participate in extreme sports. We were also interested in the popularity of individual sports and in people‘s attitudes regarding the dangers and demands of these types of sports. The research was based on a statistical sample of 1,478 sport-oriented people in Slovenia, who completed an online questionnaire. The results showed that people were very familiar with individual extreme sports, especially the ultra-endurance types of sports. The people who participated in the survey stated that the most dangerous types of sports were: extreme skiing, downhill mountain biking and mountaineering, whilst the most demanding were: Ironman, ultracycling, and ultrarunning. The results have shown a wider popularity of extreme sports amongst men and (particularly among the people participating in the survey) those who themselves prefer to do these types of sports the most. Regarding the younger people involved in the survey, they typically preferred the more dangerous sports as well, whilst the older ones liked the demanding sports more. People consider that the key reasons for the extreme athletes to participate in extreme sports were entertainment, relaxation and the attractiveness of these types of sports.

  • THE DETERMINANTS of SKI RESORT SUCCESS the Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business
THE DETERMINANTS OF SKI RESORT SUCCESS A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Ezekiel Anouna May/2010 THE DETERMINANTS OF SKI RESORT SUCCESS Ezekiel Anouna May, 2010 Economics Abstract As the economy is in a decline, fewer people are willing to pay for luxuries such as vacations. Thus, the ski resort industry is suffering. This thesis reveals an opportunity m the growth of free skiing and a demand for more difficult terrain. In this paper, data is collected from nearly all Colorado ski resorts to form a regression model explaining resort success. Regression analysis is conducted to discover what aspects of a ski resort contribute to success. Primarily, skier visits from the 2008-2009 ski season are_useclas the dependant variable in the regression model to measure resort success. Additionally, hedonic pricing theory is applied to test lift ticket price as a dependant variable. The paper finds that resort size, and possibly terrain park features are related to resort success. The hedonic pricing regression finds that bowl skiing, and lack of crowds, increase consumer willingness to pay for expensive lift tickets. KEYWORDS: (ski resort, terrain park, hedonic pricing) ON MY HONOR, I HAVE NEITHER GIVEN NOR RECEIVED UNAUTHORIZED AID ON THIS THESIS Signature I would like to thank my thesis advisor, Esther Redmount, for her support and consistent efforts to make sure I was on track. I would like to thank my family for supporting me in so many ways throughout my college career.

  • Introduction
Introduction The philosophy and spirit of the Laws Football is the greatest sport on earth. It is played in every country and at many different levels. The Laws of the Game are the same for all football throughout the world from the FIFA World Cup™ Final through to a game between young children in a remote village. That the same Laws apply in every match in every confederation, country, town and village throughout the world is a considerable strength which must be preserved. This is also an opportunity which must be harnessed for the good of football everywhere. Football must have Laws which keep the game ‘fair’ as a crucial foundation of the beauty of the ‘beautiful game’ is its fairness – this is a vital feature of the ‘spirit’ of the game. The best matches are those where the referee is rarely needed as the players play with respect for each other, the match officials and the Laws. The integrity of the Laws, and the referees who apply them, must always be protected and respected. All those in authority, especially coaches and team captains, have a clear responsibility to the game to respect the match officials and their decisions. 11 Laws of the Game 2017/18 | Introduction Managing changes to the Laws The first ‘universal’ football Laws were drawn up in 1863 and in 1886 The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) was founded by the four British football associations (The FA, Scottish FA, FA of Wales and Irish FA) as the worldwide body with sole responsibility for developing and preserving the Laws of the Game.

  • The Evolution of the Football Jersey – an Institutional Perspective
Journal of Institutional Economics (2021), 17, 821–835 doi:10.1017/S1744137421000278 RESEARCH ARTICLE The evolution of the football jersey – an institutional perspective David Butler and Robert Butler* Department of Economics, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland *Corresponding author. Email: [email protected] (Received 6 March 2020; revised 31 March 2021; accepted 2 April 2021; first published online 4 May 2021) Abstract This paper explores the interaction of informal constraints on human behaviour by examining the evolu- tion of English football jerseys. The jersey provides an excellent setting to demonstrate how informal con- straints emerge from formal rules and shape human behaviour. Customs, approved norms and habits are all observed in this setting. The commercialisation of football in recent decades has resulted in these infor- mal constraints, in many cases dating back over a century, co-existing with branding, goodwill and identity effects. Combined, these motivate clubs to maintain the status quo. As a result, club colours have remained remarkably resilient within a frequently changing landscape. Key words: Custom; football; habit; identity; jersey JEL codes: Z20; Z21 1. Introduction Association football, or football as it is more commonly known outside of North America, is an excel- lent example of an institution. Indeed, Douglas North used a metaphor derived from a sporting context when explaining institutions as ‘the rules of the game…to define the way the game is played. But the objective of the team within that set of rules is to win the game’ (North, 1990:3–5). Such a description is perfect for understanding how football is played.

EXTREME SPORTS AND EXTREME LIABILITY: THE EFFECT OF WAIVERS OF LIABILITY IN EXTREME SPORTS Amanda Greer INTRODUCTION Imagine that a skier in a base jumping competition is about ready to jump off a cliff. Once the skier jumps off the cliff, usually the bindings of the skis will come off and the parachute will open, enabling a safe landing. However, in this situation, the bindings of the skis come off, but the parachute fails to open. The skier subsequently crashes to the ground, sustaining extremely serious injuries that leave the skier para- lyzed. As a result of the injuries, the skier files an action against the sponsors' involved in putting on the competition, claiming that they were negligent in giving him a defective parachute. The sponsors as- sert that the skier signed a liability waiver barring all claims, even negligence.

Knowledge transfer project: SKI TOURING IN NORWAY Ski touring in USA, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden and their perceptions of Norway as a ski touring destination 2017‐2018 Contents Summary and key findings Ski touring France pages 1 – 30 Ski touring Germany, Austria, Switzerland pages 31 – 62 Ski touring Spain pages 63 – 76 Ski touring US pages 77 – 92 Ski touring Sweden pages 93 – 114 Photo: Håvard Myklebust – visitnorway.com Summary and key findings This project is a cooperation between Innovation Norway and NCE Tourism Fjord Norway. The project was conducted by Innovation Norway’s offices in France, Germany, USA, Spain and Sweden in 2017‐18. The project has been done in two phases. First we did a desktop survey scanning the markets’ ski touring tour operators, web sites, organizations, magazines and festivals. Secondly we conducted interviews with the most relevant tour operators in each market. The results are shown in this report. We hope that this report can contribute in the production of high quality ski touring adventures in Norway. Key results and take‐home messages are mentioned in this summary, but we recommend you to read the whole report. Opportunities ‐ There is an increased interest for ski touring in France, Germany, Spain and Sweden. In USA, the demand seems to remain stable. ‐ Sales of ski touring equipment has increased largely in France, ‐ Ski touring will most likely not become a volume activity, due to high demand of physical abilities, good mountain and snow knowledge and a certain income (France) ‐ In USA, Norway enjoys a strong association with skiing.
