As the design progressed the youngest and most inexperienced member of the group was disturbed by something that the others failed to see until one day he said, “Isn’t the strength of any system only as good as the weakest link?”. After much profanity and embarrassing public outbursts Bert proclaimed, “He’s right!”. So began the development of the tapered roller main drive gear bearing for the GrudgeBox. Word of this leaked out of the R&D department and soon the calls started coming in. Some inquiries were hostile in nature. The decision was made to offer the crown jewel of the GrudgeBox to those with a stock 2007-later transmission. Tapered roller bearings can be found in lathes, 18-wheeler trailer axles, and the left side flywheels on Milwaukee engines from the last century. -

Topics include hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical/electronic operation of automatic drive trains and the use of appropriate service tools and equipment. Upon completion, students should be able to explain operational theory and diagnose and repair automatic drive trains. Course Hours per Week: Class, 2; Lab Hours, 3; Semester Hours Credits, 3. SAFETY DISCLAIMER: Automotive work presents many hazards. A moment’s carelessness can cause injury to oneself or to others. Such mishaps can occur quickly due, in part, to the nature of the industrial tools used in automotive work. The weight of automobiles and the equipment used to fix them can even cause fatal injuries. Therefore, great care must always be taken in checking out equipment before use, and in using that equipment to work on automobiles. As we work to insure the safety of everyone in the Durham Tech automotive lab, it is the instructor’s responsibility to introduce students to equipment and to advise them on its safe operation. Those health and safety procedures are also presented in each textbook for each course in the automotive program. Students are responsible for mastery of that safety information. Durham Tech holds each student in every class responsible for reading and applying all of the information regarding personal and public safety and personal and public health in the required text. While working in the Durham Tech automotive lab, safety glasses must be worn by everyone. -

Monitoring their operation state is the key to keep the whole machine running normally. It is not enough to just apply traditional fault diagnosis methods to detect the running condition of rotating machinery when weak faults occur. It is because of the complexity of the planetary gearbox structure. In addition, its running state is unstable due to the effects of the wind speed and external disturbances. In this paper, a signal model is established to simulate the vibration data collected by sensors in the event of a failure occurred in the planetary bearings, which is very useful for fault mechanism research. Furthermore, an improved wavelet scalogram method is proposed to identify weak impact features of planetary bearings. The proposed method is based on time-frequency distribution reassignment and synchronous averaging. The synchronous averaging is performed for reassignment of the wavelet scale spectrum to improve its time-frequency resolution. After that, wavelet ridge extraction is carried out to reveal the relationship between this time-frequency distribution and characteristic information, which is helpful to extract characteristic frequencies after the improved wavelet scalogram highlights the impact features of rolling element bearing weak fault detection. -

Introduction Aluminium (Al) is an important structural engineering material, its usage ranking only behind ferrous alloys (Birbilis, Muster et al. 2011). The growth in usage and production of Al continues to increase (Davis 1999). The extensive use of Al lies in its strength:density ratio, toughness, and to some degree, its corrosion resistance. From a corrosion perspec‐ tive, which is most relevant to this chapter, Al has been a successful metal used in a num‐ ber of applications from commodity roles, to structural components of aircraft. A number of Al alloys can be satisfactorily deployed in environmental/atmospheric conditions in their conventional form, leaving the corrosion protection industry to focus on market needs in more demanding applications (such as those which require coating systems, for example, the aerospace industry). Relatively pure aluminium presents good corrosion resistance due to the formation of a bar‐ rier oxide film that is bonded strongly to its surface (passive layer) and, that if damaged, re- forms immediately in most environments; i.e. re-passivation (Davis 1999). This protective oxide layer is especially stable in near-neutral solutions of most non-halide salts leading to excellent pitting resistance. Nevertheless, in open air solutions containing halide ions, with Cl- being the most common, aluminium is susceptible to pitting corrosion. -

Mitchell Overdrive Installation By Tom Endy Westminster, California A suitable and safe spring spreader. This series of 23 photos and comments illustrated are offered as an aid to the installation of a Mitchell overdrive in a Model A Ford. A Mitchell overdrive can be installed in a Model A without completely disassem- bling the rear axle assembly. If the Model A is a good running car with no rear axle assembly issues the installation can be accomplished at a technical seminar in about six hours with the help of four willing workers. The photos in this article show a rear axle housing with wheels, brake drums, back- ing plates, and rear radius rods removed. However, none of these need be removed to accommodate the installation of a Mitchell overdrive. #1. The rear axle assembly is removed from the car and read- The first task is to remove the rear axle assembly from the car. A suitable spring ied for the Mitchell install. It is not necessary to remove rear wheels, brake drums, backing plates, and rear radius rods. spreader should be used. Once the spring has been spread the shackle bolts are removed. The spring and spring spreader are left installed under the car until the rear axle assembly with the Mitchell overdrive connected to it is ready for re- installation. This is the safe method of going about the task of removal. Pulling the rear axle assembly from the car with the spring attached to it is unsafe. The center bolt holding the spring leafs together was never meant to hold the amount of ten- sion packed into the rear spring. -
