Among the Taiwanese, fish is considered auspicious and a sym bol of bounty. This is because the pronunciation of “fish” (yü) is similar to that of “surplus” (yü), indicating abundance and pros perity. A fish specialty, with the fish preferably presented in its entirety, is a constant fare on the dining table during special occa sions. And in the true Taiwanese tradition, this most special dish is served as the last course, something truly worth waiting for, and remembered. Broiler Chickens
The Life of: Broiler Chickens Chickens reared for meat are called broilers or broiler chickens. They originate from the jungle fowl of the Indian Subcontinent. The broiler industry has grown due to consumer demand for affordable poultry meat. Breeding for production traits and improved nutrition have been used to increase the weight of the breast muscle. Commercial broiler chickens are bred to be very fast growing in order to gain weight quickly. In their natural environment, chickens spend much of their time foraging for food. This means that they are highly motivated to perform species specific behaviours that are typical for chickens (natural behaviours), such as foraging, pecking, scratching and feather maintenance behaviours like preening and dust-bathing. Trees are used for perching at night to avoid predators. The life of chickens destined for meat production consists of two distinct phases. They are born in a hatchery and moved to a grow-out farm at 1 day-old. They remain here until they are heavy enough to be slaughtered. This document gives an overview of a typical broiler chicken’s life. The Hatchery The parent birds (breeder birds - see section at the end) used to produce meat chickens have their eggs removed and placed in an incubator. In the incubator, the eggs are kept under optimum atmosphere conditions and highly regulated temperatures. At 21 days, the chicks are ready to hatch, using their egg tooth to break out of their shell (in a natural situation, the mother would help with this). Chicks are precocial, meaning that immediately after hatching they are relatively mature and can walk around. -

Broiler-Type Eggs Set in the United States Up 3 Percent Hatcheries in the United States weekly program set 238 million eggs in incubators during the week ending August 21, 2021, up 3 percent from a year ago. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week in the United States was 79.6 percent. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier. Broiler-Type Chicks Placed in the United States Up 1 Percent Broiler growers in the United States weekly program placed 186 million chicks for meat production during the week ending August 21, 2021, up 1 percent from a year ago. Cumulative placements from the week ending January 9, 2021 through August 21, 2021 for the United States were 6.17 billion. Cumulative placements were up 1 percent from the same period a year earlier. Mariculture has been contributing substantially to the global fish production in recent years. It accounted for about 29.2 per cent of world aquaculture production by value. It is a fact that India is still in infancy in mariculture production in the global scenario. Since mariculture is the only hope for increasing seafood production in the coming years, the research and development in this sector is of paramount importance. In fact, such thrust was not given in India and hence, it was felt necessary to develop viable seed production and farming technologies to develop mariculture. The R&D efforts in this direction yielded commendable results within a few years and Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR CMFRI succeeded in captive breeding and seed production of two high value marine fishes namely, Cobia, Rachycentron canadum and Silver pompano, Trachinotus blochii for the first time in the country. -

RESULTS OF BACTERIA SAMPLING IN THE WILSON RIVER Joseph M. Bischoff and Timothy J. Sullivan April 1999 Report Number 97-16-02 E&S Environmental Chemistry, Inc. P.O. Box 609 Corvallis, OR 97339 ABSTRACT Water quality monitoring was conducted at eight sites on the Wilson River during the period late September, 1997 through early March, 1998, from river mile 8.6 to river mile 0.2 near where the river enters Tillamook Bay. Samples were collected approximately weekly by the Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) during the course of the study, plus at more frequent intervals during two storm events in October, 1997 and March, 1998. Samples were analyzed by TCCA for fecal coliform bacteria (FCB) and E. coli. E&S Environmental Chemistry, Inc. provided the data analysis and presentation for this report. FCB concentrations and loads in the Wilson River were higher by a factor of two during the October, 1997 storm than during any of the other five storms monitored by TCCA or E&S. Similar results were found for the Tillamook and Trask Rivers by Sullivan et al. (1998b). Lowest loads in the Wilson River were found during the monitored spring storms in 1997 (by E&S) and 1998 (this study). By far the highest FCB loads were contributed by the land areas that drain into Site 7 (in the mixing zone just below the TCCA outfall) during the October 1997 and March 1998 storms. This site was the only site in the Wilson River basin that has contributing areas occupied by urban land use. Relatively high FCB loads were also found at a variety of other sites. -

Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) – Fisheries Division Fish Hatcheries Performance – Fiscal Year 2019 The DNR Fisheries Division Fish Production Section (FPS) maintains and operates six extensive, cold water fish hatcheries, three of which also produce cool water species (Table 1). There are also several ancillary programs managed by FPS to provide the support necessary to run a quality fish stocking program. Those include Fish Health and Quality, Fish Stocking, Fish Marking, and Electronics. Table 1. Fish stocking is one of the few tools available for fisheries professionals to use in managing the state’s world-class fisheries. Fish are stocked for three primary reasons: • Provide diverse fishing opportunities (e.g. walleye, steelhead) • Maintain ecosystem balance (e.g. Chinook salmon) • Rehabilitate depressed fish populations (e.g. lake sturgeon) The following summarizes the performance of the six DNR fish production facilities in five areas of focus during fiscal year 2019. Broodstock Management Broodstock management includes rearing and maintenance of captive brood populations at Oden Hatchery and Marquette Hatchery, as well as collecting gametes from feral stock. -
