  • The Claudia Quintet +1 Featuring Kurt Elling and Theo Bleckmann
THE CLAUDIA QUINTET +1 FEATURING KURT ELLING AND THEO BLECKMANN “What Is the Beautiful?” (Cuneiform) The temperaments of the poems of Kenneth Patchen (1911-72) have a wide frequency: they are brave, mystical, honest, funny, smart, tender-hearted, indignant, earnest, absurd, resistant, interior, out of step. The drummer, composer and bandleader John Hollenbeck’s music has some of those traits too, and in “What Is the Beautiful?,” his Claudia Quintet puts a handful of Patchen’s poems to music. Most of the record was commissioned by the University of Rochester, whose rare-books library is currently showing an exhibition of Patchen’s graphic art; the poem pieces are broken up by a couple of instrumental ones that aren’t directly related to Patchen. Fitting music to verse can be tricky territory: if you literalize a poem with musical gestures, you may be taking away its mysteries and killing it. But Mr. Hollenbeck’s work generally gives listeners something concrete — an effect or an event or a process in the music — without becoming condescending or obvious. Here he has paid sensitive attention to the words and moods of the Patchen poems. Sometimes that simply means that musicians mimic the words’ rhythm and melody, as happens in “Showtime” and “Do Me That Love,” or their meaning, as in “Limpidity of Silence,” which is basically a classical-music piece that indeed involves a lot of limpidity and silence. (A lot of tension too.) But sometimes it means much more. With the singer Kurt Elling reading some texts, and Theo Bleckmann singing others, Mr.

  • Dear BLP Graduates, As You Sit Back in the Warm Comfort of Your Home
Dear BLP graduates, As you sit back in the warm comfort of your home and gaze at the glowing computer screen, reading through your journals, I hope you can recapture some of the thoughts and feelings that you experienced this past summer. Remember the feeling of writing on those crinkled pages: gripping the pencil with tired hands from hours of trail building. Smell the campfire and taste the Trio sauce. Hear the buzz of numerous mosquitoes clinging to wrists and other exposed skin. Remember the laughter, friendships formed, conflicts and resolutions, rainy days, and amazing sunsets. Remember moments of doubt and apprehension when the task at hand seemed insurmountable. Most of all I hope you remember what you did to meet those challenges and that you can do it again in whatever circumstances life has to offer you. I encourage you to look for those challenges in life and seek adventure not for the thrill or the bragging rights, but rather for the chance to learn about who you are and who you can become. Remember the drive and determination it took to finish that project and the support you got from the community of your crew. And if you should begin to doubt yourself, take a pilgrimage to the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness, and walk the path that you’ve made and be proud of what you have done for yourself and for others. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you choose to pursue. Have a great winter. • Spontaneous Lux: Freestyling in Hip Hop Dance and Music
Music and Arts in Action | Volume 5 | Issue 1 Spontaneous Lux: Freestyling in Hip Hop Dance and Music MARY FOGARTY Department of Dance | School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University | Canada* ABSTRACT This essay and the accompanying video documentary explore "freestyling" (improvising) in hip hop culture, focusing in particular on a Canadian b-boy (breaking) crew called the Albino Zebrahs, which distinguishes itself through improvisational tendencies and choices. An ethnographic analysis of their approach to b-boying reveals that the values and processes behind freestyling involve more work and intention than most outsiders imagine. Through a comparison of West Coast freestyling (a form of rap)and the breaking (dance) styles that developed near Toronto, Canada, this video documentary reveals that these particular local traditions of freestyling, as improvisation, in rap and dance grew, in part, out of participants' imagining of what was happening in other locales. Through the assumptions that new participants made that what they were seeing and hearing were improvised, improvisative practices emerged that borrowed not only from jazz traditions and infuences, but also BMXing and other physical lifestyle cultures. This process, arguably, was quite diferent from the practices that came before and demonstrates a spectrum of improvisational practices that requires further investigation within the burgeoning feld of improvisation studies. The flm was shot in March 2012 in Toronto, Canada and features members of the Albino

IN THIS ISSUE: Successful Soccer Season ends in State Quarterfinals. Annual Tree Lighting a Success! By Ethan Doerger ‘13 The Christmas Tree Lighting and Mass took place on Sunday night, December 4th. The Mass took place at the Egan Chapel, and was nearly filled, and according to Mr. Gualtiere it was the highest turnout of any Tree Lighting in the past 5 years at Fairfield Prep. The Mass was followed by the lighting itself. People were handed out candles and held them in silence as carols were sung and the tree was lit. The tree was brilliant, as you can see below, and you could feel the spirit of Christmas in the air. A reception in the Prep cafeteria with music from the Jazzuits brought to an end a wonderful night for the Prep Community. A Thank You to Fairfield Prep I wanted to follow up on last month's clothing drive. There was tremendous support from all of the Prep community donating over fifty full bags of winter jackets, pants, sweaters, hats, gloves, boots, etc. It was truly an amazing gift to the people of the Ludlow, VT area who lost so much in Hurricane Irene. These donations are being distributed through the Black River Good Neighbor Services to those in greatest need. The bags were accepted with big smiles and happy hearts and it truly showed Prep to be Men for Others! Thanks, Michael Osborne ‘12 Page # Soundings Newspaper Soundings Newspaper Welcome! Dear Readers, Soundings I apologize for not warning you beforehand that we here at Soundings decided to do a joint November-December issue to Ethan Doerger ‘13 hopefully give us more time to balance putting together this issue Editor-in-Chief and preparing for our upcoming midterms.
