This, the Gallery's 30th annual report, is made pursuant to the provisions of section 5(d) of Public Resolution No. 14, 75th Congress, 1st session, approved March 24, 1937 (50 Stat. 51), U.S. Code, title 20, sec. 75(d). Organization The National Gallery of Art, although established as a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution, is an autonomous and separately administered organization and is governed by its own Board of Trustees. The statutory members of the Board are the Chief Justice of the United States, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, ex officio. On April 5, 1967, Stoddard M. Stevens was elected a general trustee of the National Gallery of Art to serve in that capacity for the remainder of the term expiring July 1, 1971, thereby succeeding John N. -

On view October 12, 2012– January 6, 2013, Dürer to de Kooning: 100 Master Drawings from Munich marks the first time such a comprehensive and prestigious selection of works has been lent to a single exhibition. The Morgan’s organizing curators were granted unprecedented access to the Graphische Sammlung’s vast holdings, ultimately choosing one hundred masterworks that represent the breadth, depth, and vitality of the collection. The exhibition includes drawings by Italian, German, French, Dutch, and Flemish artists of the Renaissance and baroque periods; German draftsmen of the nineteenth century; and an international contingent of modern and contemporary draftsmen. -

JOHN FOSTER DULLES PAPERS PERSONNEL SERIES The
JOHN FOSTER DULLES PAPERS PERSONNEL SERIES The Personnel Series, consisting of approximately 17,900 pages, is comprised of three subseries, an alphabetically arranged Chiefs of Mission Subseries, an alphabetically arranged Special Liaison Staff Subseries and a Chronological Subseries. The entire series focuses on appointments and evaluations of ambassadors and other foreign service personnel and consideration of political appointees for various posts. The series is an important source of information on the staffing of foreign service posts with African- Americans, Jews, women, and individuals representing various political constituencies. Frank assessments of the performances of many chiefs of mission are found here, especially in the Chiefs of Mission Subseries and much of the series reflects input sought and obtained by Secretary Dulles from his staff concerning the political suitability of ambassadors currently serving as well as numerous potential appointees. While the emphasis is on personalities and politics, information on U.S. relations with various foreign countries can be found in this series. The Chiefs of Mission Subseries totals approximately 1,800 pages and contains candid assessments of U.S. ambassadors to certain countries, lists of chiefs of missions and indications of which ones were to be changed, biographical data, materials re controversial individuals such as John Paton Davies, Julius Holmes, Wolf Ladejinsky, Jesse Locker, William D. Pawley, and others, memoranda regarding Leonard Hall and political patronage, procedures for selecting career and political candidates for positions, discussions of “most urgent problems” for ambassadorships in certain countries, consideration of African-American appointees, comments on certain individuals’ connections to Truman Administration, and lists of personnel in Secretary of State’s office. -

Earl A. Powell III, director, National Gallery of Art, announced today that Betsey Gushing Whitney, a philanthropist in medicine and art, bequeathed to the Gallery eight important works by major artists, including Self- Portrait (1889) by Vincent van Gogh, Marcelle Lender Dancing the Bolero in "Chilperic" (1895-1896) by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Open Window. Collioure (1905) by Henri Matisse, The Harbor of La Ciotat (1907) by Georges Braque, The Beach at Sainte-Adresse (1906) by Raoul Dufy, Tugboat on the Seine. Chatou (1906) by Maurice de Vlaminck, The Beach at Trouville (1906) by Albert Marquet, and Saida by Kees van Dongen. Mrs. Whitney, widow of ambassador John Hay "Jock" Whitney, passed away March 25. "Mr. and Mrs. John Hay Whitney were connoisseurs of the highest order and assembled a truly remarkable collection," said Powell. "They have been extremely generous to the National Gallery and the nation.
