  • Church of Ireland Parish Registers
National Archives Church of Ireland Parish Registers SURROGATES This listing of Church of Ireland parochial records available in the National Archives is not a list of original parochial returns. Instead it is a list of transcripts, abstracts, and single returns. The Parish Searches consist of thirteen volumes of searches made in Church of Ireland parochial returns (generally baptisms, but sometimes also marriages). The searches were requested in order to ascertain whether the applicant to the Public Record Office of Ireland in the post-1908 period was entitled to an Old Age Pension based on evidence abstracted from the parochial returns then in existence in the Public Record Office of Ireland. Sometimes only one search – against a specific individual – has been recorded from a given parish. Multiple searches against various individuals in city parishes have been recorded in volume 13 and all thirteen volumes are now available for consultation on six microfilms, reference numbers: MFGS 55/1–5 and MFGS 56/1. Many of the surviving transcripts are for one individual only – for example, accessions 999/562 and 999/565 respectively, are certified copy entries in parish registers of baptisms ordered according to address, parish, diocese; or extracts from parish registers for baptismal searches. Many such extracts are for one individual in one parish only. Some of the extracts relate to a specific surname only – for example accession M 474 is a search against the surname ”Seymour” solely (with related names). Many of the transcripts relate to Church of Ireland parochial microfilms – a programme of microfilming which was carried out by the Public Record Office of Ireland in the 1950s.

Member of Clan na Gael, San Francisco, 1915 -; 0/C. Castlelyons Coy. I.R.A. 1919 -. Subject. (a) Clan na Gael, San Francisco, U.S.A., 1915 -; (b) Fermoy Battalion I.R.A., Co. Cork, 1919-1921. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil File No. S.2309 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT BY MR. WILLIAM BUCKLEY, Ballyhampshire, Castlelyons, Co. Cork. I was born at Francestown, Castlelyons, quite close to Bawnard House, the home of the Kent family, made famous by 1916, on September 10th, 1886. My parents were farmers. My father was evicted from his holding on September 20th, 1911. I left Ireland for New Zealand in March, 1912. For my first twelve months or so there, I worked at gold mining at Addison's Flats, Westport, West Coast, South Island. Not making any kind of a lucky strike at the gold mining, I moved to the North Island where I found work as a labourer on a waterworks undertaking at Ummatucka Range, where I worked until nearing the end of l914 when I left for U.S.A. I arrived in San Francisco sometime before Christmas, 1914, where I found work on the docks as a longshoreman. I was not very long in San Francisco when I made contact with the Irish crowd there. It was there I joined the Irish Volunteers in 1915 and became a member of Clan na Gael.

  • The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers
THE LIST of CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS A Colour-coded Resource Accounting For What Survives; Where It Is; & With Additional Information of Copies, Transcripts and Online Indexes SEPTEMBER 2021 The List of Parish Registers The List of Church of Ireland Parish Registers was originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI), now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. Griffith’s original list (which was titled the Table of Parochial Records and Copies) was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and thereafter corrected in the light of subsequent events - most particularly the tragic destruction of the PROI in 1922 when over 500 collections were destroyed. A table showing the position before 1922 had been published in July 1891 as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of the 1922 fire, the list changed dramatically – the large numbers of collections underlined indicated that they had been destroyed by fire in 1922. The List has been updated regularly since 1984, when PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers. Under the tenure of Dr Raymond Refaussé, the Church’s first professional archivist, the work of gathering in registers and other local records from local custody was carried out in earnest and today the RCB Library’s parish collections number 1,114. The Library is also responsible for the care of registers that remain in local custody, although until they are transferred it is difficult to ascertain exactly what dates are covered.

It would be of great assistance to us if records can be sent as soon as possible after the years end, but the end of March is the deadline for submissions. Records can be sent on paper, but if possible, an electronic spreadsheet such as Excel is preferred. Requests for a sample spreadsheet, as well as all submissions (records, papers, photos, sketches) for the next report should be e-mailed to [email protected] The sequence and nomenclature used in this list follows Voous K.H. 1973-77. List of Recent Holartic Bird Species (IBIS 115: 612-638, 119: 223-250, 376-406), as followed by the IRBC. Most of the records from Cape Clear have been extracted from the observatory annual logs, with the kind permission of the warden and BirdWatch Ireland.

  • Old St. John Cemetery ~ Middletown, Connecticut Headstones Inscribed with the Place of Origin in Ireland
Old St. John Cemetery ~ Middletown, Connecticut Headstones Inscribed with the Place of Origin in Ireland St. John Church was built in 1844 for the growing Irish Catholic population. By 1850 the congregation had outgrown the small house of worship. Efforts to raise funds for a new church included an offer of burial plots to parishioners who donated $20.00 towards the building fund. All the plots were quickly taken and the cemetery was laid out on the north side of the church. In 1934, a list of headstone inscriptions for Middletown was copied under the auspices of F.E.R.A. and the W.P.A., sponsored by the Connecticut State Library, and compiled under the supervision of Charles R. Hale. The Headstone Inscriptions: Town of Middletown, Connecticut includes the complete transcriptions of the headstones in Old St. John Cemetery and are available on microfilm and hardcopy in the library’s local history collection (MIDDRM 974.66 HAL). The following list serves as a name index to the headstones in Old St. John Cemetery that were inscribed with places of origin in Ireland. It teaches terms associated with Irish genealogy and describes the contents, uses, and availability of major genealogical records. Use this outline to set meaningful research goals and to select the records which will help you achieve them. Usually, you will need to know the specific parish or town in Ireland where your ancestor was born before beginning your Irish research. Tips for finding your ancestor's place of origin are in the “Ireland Search Strategies” section of this outline. You will also need some basic understanding of genealogical research procedures before you begin to look for your ancestors. To help you understand the basics, the booklet, Guide to Research, are available at the Family History Library and at Family History Centers. Using This Outline Since several factors can affect your choice of records to search, this outline will help you evaluate the contents, reliability, availability, ease of use, time period covered, and the likelihood that your ancestor will be listed in these records.
