Olympic Media: Inside the Biggest Show on Television
Olympic Media Located in the United States, NBC (National Broadcasting Company) is the biggest and most powerful Olympic network in the world, having won the rights to televise both the Summer and the Winter Olympic Games. By way of attract- ing more viewers of both sexes and all ages and ethnicities than any other sporting event, and through the production of breathtaking spectacles and absorbing stories, NBC’s Olympic telecasts have huge power and potential to shape viewer perceptions. Billings’s unique text examines the production, content, and potential effects of NBC’s Olympic telecasts. Interviews with key NBC Olympic producers and sportscasters (including President of NBC Universal Sports and Olympics Dick Ebersol and primetime anchor Bob Costas) outline the inner workings of the NBC Olympic machine; content analyses from ten years of Olympic telecasts (1996–2006) examine the portrayal of nationality, gender, and ethnicity within NBC’s telecast; and survey analyses interrogate the extent to which NBC’s story- telling process affects viewer beliefs about identity issues. This mixed-method approach offers valuable insights into what Billings portrays as “the biggest show on television”. Andrew C. The NFL playoffs are here with its hard reality: win and you go on, lose and you go home. “Playoffs, playoffs, playoffs!” says New York Jets running back LEON WASHINGTON. “It feels good to say it.” It feels good – no, great – for all 12 clubs in the 2006 playoffs. They earned it through 17 hard weeks of competition, surviving with honors: • The cumulative winning percentage for all 12 clubs is .672 (129-63). Eight of the 12 teams won at least 10 games. • Many of the clubs enter the playoffs on a roll. San Diego has won 10 in a row – the third team since 2000 to begin the playoffs with that lengthy a streak (2003, New England, 12; 2004, Pittsburgh, 14). Baltimore has won nine of its last 10, New England six of its last seven, the New York Jets five of their last six, and Philadelphia five in a row. • It is a “fresh face” playoffs, with seven clubs – Baltimore, Dallas, Kansas City, New Orleans, New York Jets, Philadelphia and San Diego – making the final 12 after missing out last year. It is the 10th consecutive year that at least five clubs accomplished such a feat. • It’s a solid playoffs, led by teams that have been consistently good over the years, with winning percentages of .600 or more over the past five seasons – Indianapolis (.750), New England (.738), Philadelphia (.663) and Seattle (.600). -

Televised college sports was confined in 1979 to a Saturday football game on ABC, weekend basketball games on NBC and some regionally televised conference basketball packages. The most notable being C.D. Chesley’s production(2) of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) games on a syndicated network of east coast television stations.(3) ESPN, established in September 1979, was new and satellite transmission for cable network programs was in its infancy. Also in 1979, Rick Ray, a 30 year-old television program manager with WCCB-TV in Charlotte, NC decided that there was more interest in college basketball on television than was being provided by the networks or local television stations. When WCCB disagreed with his concept for producing more basketball games, Ray then left the station.(4) He and his partner, Dee Birke who owned and operated an advertising agency, traveled to Alaska to produce the Sea Wolf Classic, a tournament Ray later renamed the Great Alaska Shootout.(5)(6) Thus began a career of buying rights to games, and producing, syndicating and selling commercials to cover expenses. The company was named Raycom, short for Ray Communications. -

Louis J. Schaefer won the 1929 Preakness aboard Dr. Freeland and in 1939, ten years later saddled Challedon to victory. John Longden duplicated the feat, winning the 1943 Preakness astride Count Fleet and saddling Majestic Prince, the victor in 1969. AFRICAN-AMERICAN RIDERS Seven African-American riders have had Preakness mounts, including two who visited the winners’ circle. George “Spider” Anderson won the 1889 Preakness aboard Buddhist. Willie Simms had two mounts, including a victory in the 1898 Preakness with Sly Fox. “Pike” Barnes was second with Philosophy in 1890, while the third and fourth place finishers WOMEN & in the 1896 Preakness were ridden by African-Americans (Alonzo Clayton—3rd with Intermission & Tony Hamilton—4th on Cassette).
