Issue #28 Quarterly Oct/Nov/Dec Warp Domain Chronicles  Christie’s Auction 40 Years of History All types of Bidders, some costumed, some from all over the world, paid top dollar for Star Trek items at the Christie's auction of memorabilia from the historic television and movie franchise. The auction kicked off on Oct. 5, with everything from costumes and props to blueprints and furniture on sale from the archives of CBS Paramount Television Studios

A model of the Starship Enterprise D was bought by a bidder for $578,000 not including commission, more than 20 times its $25,000 to $35,000 pre-sale estimate. A model of the Starship Enterprise E was bought by an online bidder for $132,000 including commission, more than 10 times its $8,000 to $12,000 pre-sale estimate. Another item, a 30-square-inch (193-square- centimeter) Borg cube model used in "Star Trek: First Contact," sold for $96,000 to a telephone bidder. Its estimated value was between $1,000 and $1,500.

"The energy was definitely beyond what I expected," said Cathy Elkies, Christie's director of special collections.

With 1,000 lots of CBS Paramount Television material on offer over three days, Christie's, better known for Picassos and Monets than Starfleet banners and costumes, had anticipated a total of up to $2 million, the actual total was $7.1 million.

Other Items sold were, Captain Jean-Luc Picard's chair sold for more than $62,000, while a 42- inch (107-cm) bazooka-style prop rifle used by Michael Dorn as Worf in "Star Trek: Insurrection" fetched $19,200 after being estimated at between $600 and $800. A Klingon Bird of Prey sold for $307, 200, after being estimated at $8,000 to $12,000.

A bidder who came dressed as Picard bought actor Ron Perlman's vinyl jumpsuit from "Star Trek: Nemesis" for $6,000. "It's with Picard then," the auctioneer said during bidding, adding, "A sentence I never thought I'd say."

History.Com , the Web site of the History Channel, presented a live webcast of 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection, on Oct. 5-7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. ET each day, from Christie's auction house in New York. Replay of the web cast has not yet been announced

The multi-camera production will captured the live, three-day auction of more than 1,000 lots from CBS Paramount Television's Star Trek franchise, including props, scenery, models and costumes. The History Channel will also broadcast two new Star Trek documentary specials, which will premiere in the first quarter of 2007. The auction is one of several events being held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Star Trek.

Independent movies Two independent movie projects involving the Star Trek community have recently completed principal photography and have entered post-production.

Chase Masterson ("Leeta") in a principal role in a noir-style mystery/sci-fi film called "Yesterday Was a Lie." She was also the producer. The cast and crew finished shooting in late September, and celebrated with a wrap party at a Hollywood bar that served as one of the film's locations Writer/director James Kerwin is editing the film himself, and expects it to be done by March. "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men," an independently produced feature-length "webisode" featuring a great deal of talent from the studio-produced Trek shows, held its last few days of shooting at locations around the Los Angeles area, with Tim Russ directing. Scenes were shot at Vasquez Rocks, a very popular setting for Trek episodes ("Arena," "Initiations," etc.). and also at a beautifully landscaped home in an area known as Lakeview Terrace. Shooting included a host of Trek stars including Nichelle Nichols, Cirroc Lofton, Walter Koenig, Alan Ruck, Grace Lee Whitney, , Lawrence Montaigne, Celeste Yarnell, Jack Donner, and several others including Russ himself playing "Tuvok." Most of those actors reprised the roles they're most famous for, with a few exceptions — Lofton, for instance, did not play "Jake Sisko" but rather a character. Post-production work now will involve extensive visual effects. "Of Gods and Men" will be a free Internet download rolled out in three parts, with the first targeted for this Christmas. Watch for updates at StarTrekOfGodsandMen.com — and be sure to view the trailer.

Sulu Beams Up In Fan Trek George Takei has agreed to play his Star Trek character, Hikaru Sulu, in an episode of the fan- produced Star Trek: New Voyages Web films , the Associated Press reported.

Takei's character will age 30 years, with flowing hair and leather clothes, in "World Enough and Time," a 50-minute fan production being filmed at an old car dealership in the Adirondacks in upstate New York.

James Cawley, a fan who lives in nearby Ticonderoga, has financed 15 years of such Star Trek episodes from his earnings as an Elvis impersonator and plays Capt. James T. Kirk in this episode. Cawley told the AP that the episode will be released in March as a free Internet download from his Web site.

Doohan NN.M..M. Launch to be Rescheduled The memorial spaceflight intended to launch a portion of James Doohan's ashes into space from a New Mexico spaceport will not take place the weekend of October 20 as originally scheduled. Space Services Inc., aka Celestis, contracted with UP Aerospace to attach the memorial payload to a SpaceLoft XL-1 rocket, but a test launch of that vehicle last week failed to achieve the proper altitude. The company is now investigating.

UP Aerospace plans to reschedule the flight with the memorial payload aboard, probably for a November date, and probably from the same location. We will bring you updates as we receive them.
