28. ABC Southern Queensland, Qld Country Hour, 12/10/17, Charlie McKillop. Report by Tom Major, ABC Rural. McKillop says water security is also an issue for growers who have access to the most reliable irrigation system in Australia. She mentions irrigators, researchers, and policymakers have been attending a water forum in Burdekin this week. Major says about 10,000 people in Burdekin rely on the abundance of high-quality irrigation water that grows 80,000 hectares of cane and other crops. CSIRO Senior Principal Research Scientist Dr Keith Bristow says Burdekin is one of the best-irrigated systems in the world. Bristow talks about managing the catchment, saying water is the big advantage in Burdekin. Irrigation Water Specialist Dr Anthony Turton from South Africa says he has been impressed by Australia's cutting-edge approach to the use of water in the driest continent amidst environmental and financial restraints. Turton says Australians know well how to navigate the politics of water, noting the positive dialogue achieve by bodies like the Burdekin Water Futures group. Bristow discusses challenges on water irrigation in Burdekin and how they are addressing it.

27. ABC North Queensland, Rural Report, 12/10/17, Tom Major. Pre-recorded Interview with Keith Bristow, Senior Research Scientist, CSIRO about the 2017 Burdekin Water Forum. Major reports the growers in the Burdekin Region have the benefit of an irrigation system that is pretty much the envy of farmers around the country. Bristow has been working in the region for three decades. He has called the Burdekin as one of the best irrigation in the world but the water security should not be taken for granted. Bristow names the irrigation systems in the region. He explains it always about water in managing the catchment properly. However, he says they have allowed the groundwater to rise towards the sole surface too much. He adds they need to take back control of the water level of the groundwater which may require some dewatering. He explains if they let this happen, the groundwater will end up in Great Barrier Reef. He says there have been lots of cooperation within the district to keep improving their use of nutrients in their water. Major mentions energy efficiency with the bike electricity process has been an issue for the farmers in the last few years. Bristow says the energy is a big challenge for farmers. He thinks they need to be careful with their irrigated systems in the region and look for more ways to improve on how they do the process
