NORHAYATI*, N. EHWAN & T. OKUDA ABSTRACT The large scale expansion of oil palm plantations nowadays bring huge negative impact on habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity, especially at Pasoh, Negeri Sembilan, Peninsular Malaysia. The monoculture system that was developed since the 1970s has suppressed biodiversity levels because of the lack of suitable microhabitats. In order to assess ecological remediation of plantation, a green corridor was established along Sg. Petekah at Felda Pasoh 2. The assessment was conducted from March to May 2012 at Sg. Petekah green corridor (SPGC) at Felda Pasoh 2 and Felda Pasoh 3 with no green corridor (FP3). Amphibians were sampled for species richness by using fenced pit fall traps and visual encounter surveys. Microhabitat selection of amphibians was identified to come up with recommendations for improvement. The low Shannon-Wiener diversity value, H’ at SPGC (1.82 ± 0.126) was obtained indicating that the remediation is yet to be achieved, but the H’ value was much lower at PF3 (0.62±0.2) indicating a positive projection of remediation. Microhabitat selection study indicated that each amphibian species tend to avoid overlapping of microhabitat based on specific guilds. Based on the results, the green corridor should be widened to allow space for foraging and territorial defence, planted not only with trees but also shrubs and herbs to improve the ground cover for the amphibians and also to include other animal groups, such as birds and mammals. -

We assessed the patterns of diversity, richness and abundance in anuran’s communities for four sites in the Sebangau forest in East Kalimantan, an important region given the great number of fauna and flora species. The main objective was to assess anurans community factors relative to different degrees of disturbance for the habitats of the Sebangau Catchment. -

We use external morphology, body proportions, color pattern, advertisement calls, and phylogenetic analysis of molecular sequence data to show that Philippine populations of Leptobrachium represent three distinct and formerly unrecognized evolutionary lineages, and we describe each (populations on Mindoro, Palawan, and Mindanao Island groups) as new species. Our findings accentuate the degree to which the biodiversity of Philippine amphibians is currently underestimated and in need of comprehensive review with new and varied types of data. The new species differs from all members of the subgenus by lack of spines on upper lip, small size with adult male SVL of 55.2 mm, indistinct tympanum, first finger longer than fourth, inner metatarsal tubercle smaller than first toe, 2ú phalanges of fifth toe unwebbed, dorsum nearly smooth and flanks with densely granulated skin, dorsum light brown with dark brown spots, flanks dark brown reticulated with cream spots, and abdomen cream with irregular brown markings. Classification of two subgenera in Leptobrachium is discussed. 66 CONSERVATION Herpetological Review, 2014, 45(1), 66–73. © 2014 by Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles The Bornean Frog Race: Raising Conservation Awareness on Amphibians of Sarawak and Malaysia The second largest (743,380 km2) tropical island (after New Guinea), Borneo straddles the equator between coordinates 04°S–07°N and 10–119°E (Fig. 1). Croizat (1958) described Bor- neo as a geological composite, and the island sits on the eastern margin of the Sunda Shelf, a Laurasian continental plate. Until three decades ago, the island comprised vast swaths of tropical forest, and a diversity of forest types and contrasting habitats, ranging from extensive lowland dipterocarp forests, significant areas of blackwater swamps, and high mountains. The seas around Borneo are generally shallow (< 200 m), contributing to faunal similarities with the faunas of Sumatra (to the west), Java (to the south), and Peninsular Malaysia (in the north), all areas lying on the Sunda Shelf. Exceptionally deep waters (> 2000 m) of the Makassar Strait, to the east of Borneo, separate that island from Sulawesi, which lies on the Sahul Shelf. Wallace’s Line, de- marcating the Oriental fauna from that of Australasia, is posi- tioned across these deep-water straits Apart from contemporary habitat conditions, past climates and land connections are linked to present diversity. During the glaciation events of the Pleistocene, sea levels in the northeast approached 140 m below present level in the Sulu Sea (Linsley 1996), while to the north, the north Sunda Shelf was -116 to -114 m (Hanebuth et al. 2000) when the Sundaland formed a gigantic landmass (Molengraaff 1921; Morley and Flenley 1987). -

As consequences, natural habitats in the region have been fragmented and species diversity, including herpetofauna, has been decreased. This study aimed to assess herpetofauna diversity in four different habitats in Munggu Village: (1) forests, (2) Landak river, (3) tourist areas, and (4) rubber plantations. Data collection used Visual Encounter Survey (VES) for 8 days. The results showed that the total of 24 herpetofauna species: 15 amphibians’ species (4 families) and 9 reptiles species (6 families) have been recorded from the four sampled areas. Of the four locations 11 species were found in river habitat in the forest, 4 species in the location of Landak river, 8 species in tourism sites and 9 species in rubber plantations.
