The Boy Scouts have not only demonstrated their worth to the Nation, but have also materially contributed to a deeper appreciation by the American people of the higher conception of patriotism and good citizenship. Every nation depends for its future upon the proper training and development of its youth.

WHY SHOULD EVERY LEADER COMPLETE TRAINING? Completing Position-Specific Training prepares leaders to deliver a quality, fun-filled program. Leaders who understand the whys and how's of the program are more effective in their roles. They know how to use available resources to provide an exciting and worthwhile program for boys. Trained leaders have confidence in carrying out their responsibilities and, along with the scouts, have more fun.

WHAT MAKES A TRAINED LEADER?

Position-Specific Training goes into greater detail on youth development and youth behavior, program planning, activities, and the purposes of the program. These courses may be completed online or in an Instructor-led session. Adult leaders in units are considered trained and eligible to wear the official “Trained” emblem when they have completed Youth Protection Training and the training courses outlined below, or have completed Youth Protection Training and a previous training course when it was current. Note: Effective April 30, 2018 new direct contact leaders must complete Hazardous Weather Training to be considered position trained.

Youth Protection Training is a joining requirement for all registered adults and must retaken every two years to remain current! Times and challenges change, yet the values of Scouting will never change. Scouts of any era would recognize every word that you live by today, because those words have always defined Scouting. The goodness of a person and of the society he or she lives in often comes down to very simple things, and the words found in the Scout Law. Every society depends on trust and loyalty, on courtesy and kindness, on bravery and reverence. These are the values of Scouting, and these are the values of America.

48 ROUNDTABLE

Why Roundtable?

Roundtable is a monthly program offered by districts that gives leaders hands -on experience and provides a forum for leaders to offer and receive help from their fellow Scouters. Roundtable is a form of supplemental training for volunteers. The objective of Roundtable is to give leaders program ideas, information on upcoming events and trainings, and an opportunity to share experiences and enjoy fun and fellowship with other Scouting leaders. As a result of the roundtable experience, unit leaders will be inspired, motivated, informed, and able to provide a stronger program for their Scouts.

A SCOUT IS REVERENT

50

If every boy in the United States could be placed under the wholesome influences of the Scout program and should live up to the Scout Oath and rules, we would hear fewer pessimistic words as to the future of our nation. Not only is it based on the fundamental rules of right thinking and acting, but it seems to embrace in its code almost every virtue needed in the personal and social life of mankind.

54 VENTURING OFFICER ASSOCIATION

What is Venturing? Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 13 and have completed the eighth grade, or age 14 through 21 years of age. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

What does a Venturing Officer Association (VOA) do? The VOA provides opportunities for adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service (A-L-P-S). By doing so, they serve to model best practices in programming for local crews and to provide a program resource for Venturers and Advisors throughout the VOA’s area of operation.

But what does this mean for your Venture Crew? The VOA in GLFSC is dedicated to helping Crews in whatever capacity they need such as recruiting support, resources for events, program help, four programmed events and training a year. We are here to answer your questions. We meet monthly and welcome anyone interested in Venturing. Whether you have an established Crew or are looking to see how Venturing can support your current program, we are here to help.

Events: VOA Meetings: • Rifle River Gauntlet - June 12-14, 2020 at Cole Canoe Base  • VOA supported youth and leader training December 12, 2020 6/12-6/14/2020 • Climbing Event - Base Camp Flint (Date TBD) River Gantlet

The Boy Scout movement is distinctly an asset to our country for the development of efficiency, virility, and good citizenship. It is essential that its leaders be men of strong, wholesome character; of unmistakable devotion to our country, its customs and ideals. -Theodore Roosevelt

67 BE A SCOUT

POPULATE YOUR PIN CHECKLIST

As we engage more prospective families in this electronic age, we must work to make sure our units are sharing the correct and most up-to-date information of Scouting programs in the community with the use of BeAScout. This tool is a great opportunity for Scout units to highlight what makes their unit so unique, to express how excited they are about Scouting, and to show to prospective Scout families the benefits of Scouting through video or photos. This tool will also assist in the gathering of accurate and up-to-date registration information from families so when they attend their parent orientation meeting, it can also be a program meeting.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR BEASCOUT.ORG PIN Updating your BeAScout.org pin is simple, and it’s a good way to make sure your information is current — that it doesn’t list last year’s Cubmaster or meeting time, for example.

Access to update your pin is available to all unit leaders, including committee members in a unit.

To update your pin:

1 Go to My.Scouting.org

1. In the drop-down menu, go to Legacy Web Tools and select BeAScout. 2. Choose “unit” (rather than council) under “Unit Pin Mode” to update the pin with your contact info. 3. Be sure to set pin status to “active.” If they want the “Apply Now” button on the pin, set “Apply Status” to “active.” 4. Note that it may take a few hours, or up to overnight, for the updated information to show up. 5. For Cub Scout packs: You’ll also want to go to Organization Manager and identify your pack’s identification: all-boy, all-girl or a family pack. Under Organization Manager, find the settings tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. The default is Boys Dens, but you can change that. Be sure to enter an effective date or it will not update the pin.

I still remember the entire Boy Scout motto. I don't remember the serial number of my gun in the army. I don't remember the number of my locker in school. But I remember that Boy Scout code.
