Rossana Muzio y Ethel Morales Índice temático 323 PREFACIO TENEMOS EL GUSTO DE PRESENTAR EL TERCER Y ÚLTIMO VO- lumen de la serie Cuencas sedimentarias de Uruguay: geología, paleonto- logía y recursos naturales. Aborda algunos de los acontecimientos de la vi- da y de la Tierra que se sucedieron durante la Era Paleozoica, hace ca. 540 a 225 millones de años, relacionados con nuestro territorio. Con la aparición de este libro se cierra una etapa en la que, habiendo logrado sortear las dificultades inherentes a toda tarea intelectual, con es- fuerzo y entusiasmo se alcanzó la meta propuesta. Esperamos haber contri- buido a una necesaria síntesis sobre el conocimiento geológico, paleontoló- gico y de los recursos naturales de las cuencas fanerozoicas uruguayas.1 Queremos destacar que esto no hubiera sido posible sin el valioso aporte de los numerosos colegas que participaron en la elaboración de estos tres volúmenes. Nuestro trabajo como editores se orientó principalmente a reunir voluntades y esfuerzos de profesionales que, desde distintos lugares y áreas del conocimiento, permitieran alcanzar aquel objetivo. Su conjugación es un ejemplo de acción colectiva y armónica en la que valoramos del mis- mo modo todos los aportes. Vaya entonces nuestro reconocimiento y agra- decimiento a los 20 colegas que contribuyeron con la obra, así como tam- bién a aquellos que participaron en la lectura y corrección de los capítulos. Con todos ellos compartimos la distinción otorgada el año pasado por el Ministerio de Educación y Cultura a nuestro primer libro de la serie.2 1. El primer volumen de esta serie, dedicado al Mesozoico, se publicó en marzo de 2003, con una se- gunda edición en agosto de 2004. El segundo, sobre el Cenozoico, apareció en marzo de 2004. 2. Se trata de una mención en la categoría Ensayo Divulgación Científica, del Premio Anual de Litera- tura correspondiente a las publicaciones del año 2003. El jurado estuvo integrado por Julio Fernán- dez, Juan Grompone, Uruguay Rossani, Julio Varela y Daniel Vidart. (N. de E.) 5 Este volumen se refiere a la evolución tectónica y sedimentaria de las cuencas paleozoicas: a sus rocas, sus fósiles y sus recursos minerales asocia- dos. Es preciso advertir, una vez más, que el contenido del libro no pretende abarcar toda la riqueza temática que involucra este período, sino que desa- rrolla selectivamente aspectos que hemos decidido resaltar. Pretendimos con los anteriores y obviamente con el presente libro, que el contenido fuera de utilidad no solamente al profesional del área de Geociencias, sino también a estudiantes universitarios de ramas científicas y técnicas, docentes de enseñanza media y, en general, a todo aquel lector que cuente con una base de conocimientos geológicos. El éxito editorial, que in- clusive llevó a una rápida segunda edición del volumen “Mesozoico”, nos dejó ver, en forma objetiva, que existe un público lector ávido por los temas de las Geociencias y que supera varias veces el número de profesionales re- lacionados directamente a la geología uruguaya. El primer capítulo del libro es una introducción breve sobre los prin- cipales acontecimientos de la evolución de la vida y de la Tierra que transcu- rrieron durante el Paleozoico, con un enfoque de carácter general y con énfa- sis en la “evolución gondwánica” en la que se enmarca nuestro territorio. El segundo capítulo es una reclamada síntesis del basamento urugua- yo sobre el que reposan nuestras cuencas sedimentarias, lográndose una ca- racterización sumaria y actualizada de los rasgos geológicos y estructurales del Escudo Uruguayo, no exento de una crítica visión sobre aspectos meto- dológicos y conceptuales que pesan sobre las principales ideas sobre la que descansan los estudios del basamento en los últimos años. Los cinco capítulos siguientes abarcan variados temas sobre la evolu- ción de las dos cuencas paleozoicas de nuestro territorio: la cuenca devónica y la cuenca permocarbonífera. La mayoría de estos capítulos contienen nue- vos enfoques sedimentológicos y estratigráficos así como discusiones de te- mas de actualidad. Por último, se incluyen dos capítulos que refieren a temáticas de apli- cación asociadas a las rocas paleozoicas: las rocas ornamentales y los recur- sos hídricos subterráneos. Si bien todos los capítulos han sido revisados por los editores y otros colegas incluidos en la nómina, el contenido de cada uno de ellos es de ex- clusiva responsabilidad de los respectivos autores. During a field trip to the Peña-Corada Unit of the southernmost Esla region of the Cantabrian Moun- tains in 1927, the German stratigrapher Wilhelm Kegel sampled brachiopods and bivalves from a section in the Laoz valley near La Ercina. The stratigraphic position is believed to be part of the No- cedo Formation of Frasnian age. This fauna includes poorly preserved steinkerns of a near-shore bi- valve fauna that was prepared for publication including labels and proposed names, but never pub- lished. The fauna represents only a very small and random part of the former community. But as in- formation on Frasnian bivalves is scarce, the few specimens add important information on the distri- bution and palaeogeographic occurrence of near-shore, that is, Rhenish Facies bivalves within the south Laurussian – Rheic Ocean Realm.

Box 821, Cody, WY 82414 ____________________ ABSTRACT - Paleontological resources occur throughout the Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations exposed in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Isolated research on specific geologic units within Bighorn Canyon has yielded data on a wide diversity of fossil forms. A comprehensive paleonotological survey has not been previously undertaken at Bighorn Canyon. Preliminary paleontologic resource data is presented in this report as an effort to establish baseline data. ____________________ INTRODUCTION ighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA) consists of approximately 120,000 acres within the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming and south-central Montana B (Figure 1). The northwestern trending Bighorn Mountains consist of over 9,000 feet of sedimentary rock. The predominantly marine and near shore sedimentary units range from the Cambrian through the Lower Cretaceous. Many of these formations are extremely fossiliferous. The Bighorn Mountains were uplifted during the Laramide Orogeny beginning approximately 70 million years ago. Large volumes of sediments, rich in early Tertiary paleontological resources, were deposited in the adjoining basins. This report provides a preliminary assessment of paleontological resources identified at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. STRATIGRAPHY The stratigraphic record at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area extends from the Cambrian through the Cretaceous (Figure 2). The only time period during this interval that is not represented is the Silurian.

The floral diversity, age correlation, and the paleoenvironment of the Barakar Formation were well described. Morphological analysis revealed the reticulate venation pattern, anastomosing of veins, and the absence of the midrib in Gangamopteris rajaensis. The recovered megafloral assemblages of Gangamopteris rajaensis and Glossopteris indica suggest a late early Permian (Artiskian-Kungurian) age for the Barakar strata of Rajmahal coal mine and the prevalence of a moderately warm climate during their deposition. Earlier the species was reported from the Barakar Formation of Damodar and Mahanadi Gondwana basins in India. However, this is the first detailed systematic investigation of this species from the Rajmahal Gondwana Basin, Jharkhand, India. This paper is a brief summary of the results of fieldwork, in outcrops across SW Libya, together with the analysis of cores, hundreds of well logs (including many high quality image logs) and seismic lines focused on the uppermost Ordovician of the Murzuq Basin. STRATIGRAPHIC FRAMEWORK The uppermost Ordovician section is the youngest of three major sequences recognized widely across the entire Saharan Platform: Sequence CO1: Unconformably overlies the Precambrian or Infracambrian basement. It comprises the possible Upper Cambrian to Lowermost Ordovician Hassaouna Formation. Sequence CO2: Truncates CO1 along a low angle, Type II unconformity. It comprises the laterally extensive and distinctive Lower Ordovician (Tremadocian-Floian?) Achebayat Formation overlain, along a probable transgressive surface of erosion, by interbedded burrowed sandstones, cross-bedded channel-fill sandstones and mudstones of Middle Ordovician age (Dapingian-Sandbian), known as the Hawaz Formation, and interpreted as shallow-marine sediments deposited within a megaestuary or gulf.

ISSN 0311-5518 A historical account of research on glossopterid ovuliferous reproductive structures reveals starkly contrasting interpretations of their architecture and homologies from the earliest investigations. The diversity of interpretations has led to the establishment of a multitude of genera for these fossil organs, many of the taxa being synonymous. We identify a need for taxonomic revision of these genera to clearly demarcate taxa before they can be used effectively as palaeobiogeographic or biostratigraphic indices. Our assessment of fructification features based on extensive studies of adpression and permineralized fossils reveals that many of the character states for glossopterids used in previous phylogenetic analyses are erroneous.

A total of 15 families; 36 genera and 53 species are documented herein, including a new genus and seventeen new species; fourteen of which remain under open nomenclature. Most of the trilobites in the British late Silurian are restricted to the shelf, and predominantly occur in the Elton, Bringewood, Leintwardine, and Whitcliffe groups of Wales and the Welsh Borderland. The Elton to Whitcliffe groups represent a shallowing upwards sequence overall; each is characterised by a distinct lithofacies and fauna. The trilobites and brachiopods of the Coldwell Formation of the Lake District Basin are documented, and are comparable with faunas in the Swedish Colonus Shale and the Mottled Mudstones of North Wales. Ludlow trilobite associations, containing commonly co-occurring trilobite taxa, are defined for each palaeoenvironment.

    Revista Brasileira de Geociências 30(3):486-490, setembro de 2000 EARLY PERMIAN PALAEOFLORAS FROM SOUTHERN BRAZILIAN GONDWANA: A PALAEOCLIMATIC APPROACH MARGOT GUERRA-SOMMER AND MIRIAM CAZZULO-KLEPZIG ABSTRACT In evaluating the parameters supplied by the taphofloras from different sedimentary facies in the Early Permian sedimentary sequences of the southern part of the Paraná basin, Brazil, it has become evident that the palaeofloristic evolution was related to palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic evolution. The homogeneous composition of Early Permian floral assemblages, which are characterized mainly by herbaceous to shrub-like plants considered to be relicts from the rigorous climate of an ice age (e.g. Botrychiopsis plantiana) suggest the persistence of the cold climate. The dominance of Rubidgea and Gangamopteris leaves with palmate venation associated with glossopterids with penate venation seems to indicate a gradual warming of climate. In roof-shales of coalbearing strata pinnate glossopterids related to Glossopteris are common, while Gangamopteris and Rubidgea (palmate forms) are poorly represented. The sudden enrichment of herbaceous articulates and filicoids fronds is characteristic of this stage and trunks of arborescents lycophytes become important elements. These antrocophilic paleofloras are characterized by typical elements of the "Glossopteris flora" associated to tree lycophytes and ferns communities. Therefore, the cool seasonal climate of Early Permian changed into the moist seasonal interval during the Artinskian-Kungurian. This climatic change was significant to the meso-hygrophitic to hygrophitic vegetation registered in roof-shale ferns of the Gondwana Southern Brazilian coalbearing strata.
