Austin City Limits Showcases Steve Earle & The Dukes: A Tribute to Guy Clark Joined by Special Guests Rodney Crowell, Joe Ely, Terry Allen & Jo Harvey Allen Special Hour Premieres October 19 on PBS Austin, TX—October 18, 2019—Austin City Limits (ACL) presents a Season 45 highlight: Steve Earle & The Dukes spotlighting the songwriting legacy of the legendary Guy Clark. Americana stalwart Earle makes his fifth appearance on the ACL stage paying tribute to his mentor, the late Texas singer-songwriter and ACL Hall of Fame legend Guy Clark, in a heartwarming hour filled with choice classics and personal anecdotes. Susanna Clark March 11, 1939-June 27, 2012 Susanna Talley Clark’s talents transcended songwriting. She was a hit songwriter, an accomplished painter, and an extraordinary muse to many celebrated artists. During the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Susanna hosted an artist salon in Nashville, where important characters of the growing Americana music movement gathered to share ideas and swap songs. In addition to her husband Guy Clark, Susanna inspired music luminaries Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Vince Gill, Carlene Carter, Jerry Jeff Walker and countless other writers and artists. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1939, Susanna met songwriters Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt in the late 1960s. She moved to Houston with Guy in 1970. Later that year, Susanna and Guy moved to Los Angeles together and then to Nashville when Guy got his first publishing deal in 1971. Van Zandt came to Nashville to be the best man when Guy and Susanna married in 1972. He lived with them for the first eight months of their marriage. Guy and Susanna were married. Guy and Townes were best friends. Susanna and Townes were soulmates. Although Guy got most of the credit, it was Susanna who dreamed up and began writing the timeless songs “Black Haired Boy,” (about Townes), “Old Friends,” and “The Cape.” She brought lyrics and simple chords to Guy and he helped her finish them. Susanna and Townes co-wrote “Heavenly Houseboat Blues” and Townes recorded it on The Late Great Townes Van Zandt. Susanna became the hit songwriter in Clark family when she wrote “I’ll Be Your San Antone Rose and Texas artist Dottsy took the song to the Billboard Top 10 in 1975.

Guy Clark: A Picture of Talent By Matt Hendrickson - Texas - August/September 2013 One of the South’s Greatest Songwriters Guy Clark is sitting in his modest home in West Nashville, Tennessee, contemplating what it means when someone calls him a “songwriter’s songwriter,” a term frequently applied to the Texas legend. Born in the West Texas town of Monahans, Clark, who is seventy-one, along with his best friend, the late Townes Van Zandt, is considered among the deans of Texas songwriters. “It’s a strange term,” Clark says in his gravelly voice. “It’s flattering, I guess. [But] you can’t make a f**king living being a songwriter’s songwriter.” Notwithstanding his ambivalence about the term, it’s undeniable that Clark is one of the most influential songwriters in all of country music. In the early seventies, Jerry Jeff Walker turned two of Clark’s songs into hits (“L.A. Freeway” and “Desperados Waiting for a Train”). In the decades since, his work has been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Jimmy Buffett, and Brad Paisley, to name a few. But Clark has saved some of his best writing for himself. His new album, My Favorite Picture of You, is a bare-bones gem that has the feel of Cash’s much-lauded American series of albums. Picture is even starker, with Clark’s deep baritone accompanied by only his guitar or sometimes backed delicately by his longtime band. Though Clark doesn’t consider himself a topical songwriter, in “Heroes,” he seethes about the rash of suicides by soldiers returning from the Middle East, while “El Coyote” recounts the story of eighteen immigrants who died after being abandoned in a locked truck by a smuggler, baking in the Texas sun just over the Mexican border.
