The logo usage logo mark (the dot design) and the logotype (the words) should never be used in ways outside of what is shown in this visual identity guide. Below is the full, three-color logo mark. Make sure to always leave white space around the logo to avoid crowding, so that it can be viewed properly. Also shown below are different layout variations of the logo as saved in the logo files: The tagline may appear with the logo mark and no church name, and the church name may appear with the logo mark and no tagline. Shown here logo usage are versions of the logo mark alone, the church name alone and the tag alone. These separate components of the full logo should be used for strategic purposes such as stirring conversation, etc. For example, in pieces like t-shirts or coffee mugs, the logo mark may be alone on the front and the church name or tag on the back, etc. MARK ALONE NAME ALONE TAG ALONE p 3 Vale Church | Visual Identity Guide There are alternate color versions of the logo: Pantone (PMS) color, CMYK color, grayscale, logo usage black & white and reverse files exist of all the different versions of the logo shown on page two and three. The PMS versions should only be used in professional printing, and the CMYK should be used for all other color printing. The grayscale version of the logo should be used when a printer is not capable of printing color, but can print grayscale. The black & white version of the logo should be used for black and white printing, or if the color version will not show up on a background. The reversed version of the logo should be used when the color version will not show up on a background, or if the background is too busy. GRAYSCALE BLACK & WHITE REVERSE p 4 Vale Church | Visual Identity Guide For certain situations when the vertical lock-up of the logo will not work, there are secondary secondary lock-up horizontal lock-ups available. The vertical lock-up is the primary logo and should be used the most—only use the horizontal lock-up when it absolutely has to be.In order to establish a strong, consistent brand, the horizontal lock-up should only be used sparingly when the primary vertical lock-up will not fit into the given layout. Consistent usage of the Vale Church color palette is an important part of building brand consistency with the logo mark, logo type and the overall identity. Using the following typefaces will help build a familiarity with anyone coming into contact with Vale Church. The logo uses the typefaces Interstate Regular and Interstate Extra Light. For all external communication and design pieces Interstate (in its different weights) should be used for headlines and subheads, and the typeface Georgia should be used for body content.     The Art of Digital Black & White By Jeff Schewe There’s just something magical about watching an image develop on a piece of photo paper in the developer tray…to see the paper go from being just a blank white piece of paper to becoming a photograph is what many photographers think of when they think of Black & White photography. That process of watching the image develop is what got me hooked on photography over 30 years ago and Black & White is where my heart really lives even though I’ve done more color work professionally. I used to have the brown stains on my fingers like any good darkroom tech, but commercially, I turned toward color photography. Later, when going digital, I basically gave up being able to ever achieve what used to be commonplace from the darkroom–until just recently. At about the same time Kodak announced it was going to stop making Black & White photo paper, Epson announced their new line of digital ink jet printers and a new ink, Ultrachrome K3 (3 Blacks- hence the K3), that has given me hope of returning to darkroom quality prints but with a digital printer instead of working in a smelly darkroom environment. Combine the new printers with the power of digital image processing in Adobe Photoshop and the capabilities of recent digital cameras and I think you’ll see a strong trend towards photographers going digital to get the best Black & White prints possible. Making the optimal Black & White print digitally is not simply a click of the shutter and push button printing.

The Pantone Matching System is a printing industry standard for spot colors. Because digital printing is becoming more popular, this study was intended to help designers decide on whether they should print Pantone colors on digital presses and expect to see similar colors on paper as they do on a computer monitor. This study investigated how a Xerox DocuColor 2060, Ricoh Pro C900s, and a Konica Minolta bizhub Press C8000 with default settings could print 45 Pantone colors from the Uncoated Solid color book with only the use of cyan, magenta, yellow and black toner. After creating a profile with a GRACoL target sheet, the 45 colors were printed again, measured and compared to the original Pantone Swatch book. Results from this study showed that the profile helped correct the DocuColor color output, however, the Konica Minolta and Ricoh color outputs generally produced the same as they did without the profile. The Konica Minolta and Ricoh have much newer versions of the EFI Fiery RIPs than the DocuColor so they are more likely to interpret Pantone colors the same way as when a profile is used. If printers are using newer presses, they should expect to see consistent color output of Pantone colors with or without profiles when using default settings.

The best analogy for the limitations of monochrome scanning is if you have every tried to photocopy your driver licenses. The picture can go completely black. This is because the copier can only reproduce full black or full white and not gray levels. If you place the copier in photo mode it is able to reproduce shades of gray. Grayscale scanning is analogous to the photo modes setting on your copier. The types of items on microfilm that are difficult to reproduce in monochrome are pencil on a blue form, light signatures, date stamps and embossing. In grayscale these items have a much higher probability to reproduce in the scanned version. Certainly there are instances where filming errors exist and the film is almost pure black or pure white. This can happen if the door to the room was opened during filming, if the canister had light intrusion prior to developing or if the chemicals or temperature were off on the developer. If these are identified the vendor can make a lamp adjustment in these sections of film or if they are frequent and the vendor has the proper cameras, they can scan at a higher bit depth. We have the ability to scan at bit depths higher than 8 bit gray up to 12 bits. 8 bit supports 256 levels of gray, 10bit supports 1024 levels and 12 bit 4096 levels.

People involved in the different stages of design process are not consistent in selecting, organizing, interacting and maintaining colors. The lack of color standardization caused a substantial amount of design work being reproduced and reprinted. Pantone, a commercial printing company grabbed the opportunity and created a standardized color reference system now known as the Pantone Matching System, to solve the problem. In the Pantone system, colors are described by their unique numbers and printed on a collection of color cards. By organizing and categorizing the colors, manufacturers, designers and printers can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match and be consistent in product design. What is being organized? Simply saying, the resources that the Pantone system organizes are colors. In daily life, people use colors as resource descriptions to support the interaction with physical and digital resources (e.g. websites, clothes, furnitures, etc.). Colors are normally considered as internal and static properties of other resources, whereas Pantone’s resource focus determines that colors are treated as primary information resources in its system. It is important to understand the scope of the Pantone color system. Despite the ubiquitous nature of colors, the resource domain of the Pantone color system is not all the colors that human can perceive and differentiate (which is impossible to organize).
