ow that the sunny weather is upon us, we will keep our fingers crossed for it to Ncontinue particularly with our Skills Week fast approaching.

Once again this year, we have a great variety of activities available for students to experience to develop their wider skills. There are new events this year and returning popular activities from previous years; there really are opportunities for all. During the same week our Year 10 students undertake their work experience placements. Best of luck to all of you.

My advice is to get as involved as possible and ask as many questions as you can in order to learn about the career. Whether it is a vocational pathway you want to follow, or just an experience opportunity, make the most of your time in the placement. PRESENTING

THE PROM 2019

Friday 28th June Tregenna Castle St Ives

n Friday 28th June, our students did us Oproud at the Year 11 Prom night.

It was an evening of real celebration as they depart onto new adventures. There were some amazing outfits on display.

Many had put a lot of thought into what they were going to wear, which included white socks for some lads and very uncomfortable looking shoes for the girls!

There were also some very classy arrivals. The evening was a great success and very enjoyable.

Thank you to all who helped to co-ordinate the evening, and to all staff who attended and supported the event. Thanks also to the Prom Pixies for their support with dresses. The students will leave with lovely memories of their prom. REPORT BY: MR MARTIN THE PROM 2019

OUT IN THE FIELD REPORT BY: MR LEECH

he whole of Year 7 and Year 8 students enjoyed a day’s fieldwork Tin support of their geography and history curriculum.

At the start of the week, Year 7 visited Falmouth. In the morning, they assessed how 500 years of history had shaped Pendennis castle.

They explored the castle grounds inside and out to see how events from the Spanish Armada to the Second World War have influenced the site.

The weather remained kind as we all enjoyed a picnic lunch on the picturesque castle green. In the afternoon,we headed to Gyllyngvase beach to examine the coastal geography of this stretch of coastline and to explain the processes that shape it.

Later in the week ,Year 8 ventured west to tour Levant Mine, the site of one of the worst mining disasters in Britain’s history. The site was crucial to this country’s industrial revolution advances and includes a working original beam engine from 1840, which some volunteers at the mine had in operation.

After investigating the underground section where the mine shaft descends over 600m, the group headed off to Marazion. At the beach, students collected primary data to assess the extent of marine plastic pollution in Mount’s Bay as well as evaluating the success of the coastal management strategies in the area.

Over both days, the students from Hayle Academy were a credit to the school. The weather made the trip much more pleasant, but our students made it a success. Thanks to all the staff who were involved NEWS UPDATE YEAR 10 SPEAK OUT

ver the last few weeks,Year 10 students have each completed an individual speech about Oa person they admire. These included famous people from the past like Martin Luther King, prominent local people like Rick Rescorla and sports people and musicians from Anthony Joshua to Beyonce.

Others decided to talk about a person they actually know, often a family member. This is a nerve-racking task as students have to speak for about five minutes on their selected person, justifying their choice. Then they are required to answer questions without prior knowledge of what they will be asked. To add to the tension, they are videoed for the exam board.

Our students were well prepared and, although anxious, they coped really well. The grades are required for their English Language GCSE but are a standalone mark. Many students gained the top grades of merits and distinctions. They should be very proud of themselves.

This was so that we could start our own remembrance garden at Hayle Academy. We are delighted that these seeds have now blossomed and have given us our own site for remembrance. NEWS UPDATE

CAMBORNE SHUTTLE SERVICE SEATS NOW AVAILABLE 2 Mrs Hickson is pleased to advise that as from the middle of June there will be two seats available on the Camborne Shuttle Service. This is a subsidised service offered by the school, at a cost of £30 per child per half of term.

The service picks up from the Lowennac Hotel and Camborne old Fire Station in the morning and returns to the same points after school.

If you are interested in this vacancy, please email Mrs Hickson on [email protected] (allocated on a first come, first served basis). 1100 PERCENT ATTENDANCE NEWS The students above each received commendations from the headteacher. They were felt to have portrayed a positive attitude towards school and UPDATE achieved 100% attendance despite finding school challenging at times. WORK EXPERIENCE WEEK 2 We wish all our Year 10 students an enjoyable and rewarding time on their Work Experience placement, some students start on the 8th July with the majority on the 15th July.

These placements have been chosen for different reasons. It could be their career of choice, giving them a chance to have a snapshot of the future, a recommendation from students in the year above or because it just looked fun!

Whatever the reason for choosing a placement, the time spent on a work experience placement is valuable for many reasons, such as improving Interpersonal skills, problem solving, commercial awareness, maturity, teamwork, practical skills, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Each student will have a visit from a member of staff during their placement. It is very rewarding for teachers to see students thriving away from the classroom.

We wish every student a wonderful time and look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return to school.

If anyone has any queries regarding work experience, please contact Mrs Hickson on 01736 753009 . REPORT BY: MRS HICKSON SALLY TRUSCOTT Senior Pastoral Lead Meet Our Staff.

n April, four Year 7 Hayle Academy students - Jaden, Cody, Charley, and Freddie, joined their football team Mousehole Predators and went to the UK’s biggest youth football tournament called ESF2019. The tournament was held at Minehead School and Ithey all stayed at Butlins.

There were a whopping 24 teams in their age group for this two day event, so the young sportsmen knew they were in for a hard challenge. Each and every one of the students played some out- standing football and managed to take top spot in their group stag- es. Next up was the knock-out stages in which they really worked hard and progressed to the final.

The team they faced in the final was “Marine Plymouth,” an Academy level team! After a close game, it finished 1-1, which led to the dreaded penalties… after much suspense, Mousehole managed a fantastic penalties win of 6-5. ESF2019 The students were later crowned ESF2019 under 12 champions and were able to meet some legends such as John Barnes, Sue Smith and Matt Le Tissier!

CHAMPION Because they won their age group, the young footballers have now been invited to attend the winner’s tournament, ESF Grand Finale, which is being held at the very prestigious St Georges Park, the England FC Training ground, in Burton-Upon-Trent. REPORT BY: STUDENT PARENT

In this 10 over match, the students batted throughout the innings with the score board ticking over. Free flowing batting from Holly, Jess and Tirzah saw a total of 56. n the 21st June, the top set Year 10 English class had an exclusive opportunity to Oparticipate in a Creative Writing Festival at Truro College, organised through Next Steps South West.

Joining with Year 12 students, the Year 10 students took part in a series of workshops that provided a range of opportunities to develop their own ideas for their writing in a range of forms.

Starting off the day in the lecture theatre, the keynote speaker, Jane Pugh, presented a highly engaging talk emphasising that everyone has their own narrative to share, drawing on her own personal journey in the writing and ‘narrative’ industry.

One workshop, led by Tim Seyfert, focused on the For this session, students experimented in writing style and structure of news reporting, drawing on from different narrative perspectives using their a his own experiences of journalism. choice of photographic portrait to create a narrative back-story. The day ended with a performance by ‘One Story Republic’, dramatising poems by Cornish poet Charles Causley. It was a wonderful day; the students were fantastic ambassadors for our school.

As they showcased their talent during the day, both Mrs Skidmore and Mrs Lock thoroughly enjoyed listening to and reading their imaginative ideas.

Looking to the future, they may wish to draw upon these ideas for their GCSE English Language exam and even beyond... perhaps there is a budding poet, editor, playwright, reporter, screenwriter or novelist in our midst? REPORT BY: MRS LOCK ARTUPDATE
