Carbine Clubs Support the Olympic Teams

In the year of the Olympics many Clubs have held special Olympic themed events and have been generous in their financial support of the national teams.

Carbine Club of NSW member John Coates AC, (pictured)who is President of the Australian Olympic Committee and Vice President of the International Olympic Committee amongst his many distinguished roles, no doubt welcomed the continued support of the Carbine Club as the athletes go into the final preparations for the greatest sporting show on earth.

We extend our best wishes to the teams as they vie for Gold; Carbiners will be cheering them on with many special interests flowing from our Clubs’ CCPNG associations with the Olympic movement.

ACT State of Origin II Dinner

The Boardroom at Jim Murphy’s provided the backdrop for the Carbine Club of the ACT State of Origin II dinner on Wednesday 22 June.

President Mac Howell welcomed the 32 members present and special guests, Raiders Head Coach and Carbine Club Member and two of the most exciting players in in Raiders players Jordan Rapana and Joey Leilua.

Mac also welcomed to the function three new members in Michael Thomson, Glenn O’Sullivan and Joe Roff, each were presented with their Carbine Club Tie and Pin.

Prior to kick-off of the State Of Origin game, Secretary Paul Walshe had a in depth interview with Ricky, Jordon and Joey in particular focusing questions on how each of them saw the season so far and their determination to have the Raiders back in finals contention this year. It’s certainly an exciting time for the and we are looking forward to the team being a part of NRL finals in 2016.

It was an honour to have three outstanding individuals from the Raiders attend the function.

Outside of the result a great evening was had by all with the wine flowing late into the night.

The use of social media at CC events is an emerging factor- President of the Carbine Club of Singapore, David Brooker, feels that the application of Chatham House rules, as per their notice to members and guests at right, has been a positive influence ensuring that speakers and interviewees feel free to open up…………..

Singapore- Derby Racing Lunch

On 8 July the Carbine Club of Singapore held its annual Derby Racing Lunch with James Cummings and Peter Moody keeping 300 members and guests enthralled well into the late afternoon. The Chinese cultural philosophy of Yin and Yang was front of centre as the two gents recalled their upbringings, mentors, and approaches to training and officialdom. Under the backdrop of the bombshell NSW government decision to discontinue Greyhound Racing James was circumspect and wise beyond his years with relevant and prescient comments on how animal welfare will quickly move to be an even greater defining force within the thoroughbred industry.

Peter was not to be outdone and dropped a few bombshells of his own including regaling the audience with just how close he came to joining Pauline Hanson in the Australian Senate at the recent Federal Election.

David Raphael and Steve Moran were very able guest interviewers and the indefatigable Kevin Naughton was at his best as MC.

Hyatt Executive Chef and Special Member Lucas Glanville was joined in the kitchen by celebrity chef from Melbourne’s Coda and Tonka restaurants Adam D’Sylva: the Eastern influence continuing with some outstanding Asian-inspired fusion food. Thanks go to Treasury Wines for gifting those who have attended multiple Club lunches with a Platinum Reserve bottle of Wolf Blass Cab/Sav, while even better received amongst those more interested in subterranean pursuits was the complimentary Brix card given to the same lucky gents.

Proceedings moved to the Martini Bar for the Presidents Shout where the drinks and good fellowship flowed just long enough for many to wander downstairs and try out their new card!

New South Wales AFL Luncheon

The Carbine Club of NSW held another successful AFL Luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel on 1 July in advance of the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs match with around 380 members and guests enjoying a feast of footy. The Sydney Swans Number One ticket holder, media personality Adam Spencer, conducted interviews with stars and upcoming stars of the game, H.G. Nelson gave his legendary “Season in Review” monologue and comedian Tommy Dean gave a very funny take of how Americans view us and our sports.

The event was also an opportunity for the Club to make presentations of scholarships to two young footballers in Errol Guilden (Swans Academy) and Nathan Richards (GWS Giants Academy) plus a sizable donation continuing the Club’s support of the NSWIS Talent on Tour Program.

Top Left – Swans stars Lance Franklin, Isaac Feeney (a CC Scholarship recipient in 2010) with Nicola Barr, AFL (NSW/ACT) representative player. Top right – Nicola autographs a novelty Sherrin for guest Mark Watson. At left – with Buddy Franklin is special guest and Swans Premiership player Michael O’Loughlin who earlier spoke to MC Caroline Searcy about the GO Foundation which was established by him and another champion in Adam Goodes to help young indigenous Australians.
