Tulsa has long been an important hub for the energy industry, with several major corporations headquartered or operating in the area. After earning my JD I plan to take the Texas Bar and move to Dallas or Houston. I am in the process of applying for summer associate/law clerk positions with the goal of getting a job with a firm that specializes in international energy-related litigation and transactional work. The Professional Development Office at TU Law has been instrumental in informing me of relevant recruiting events and other networking opportunities in Texas. Alia Heintz (3L) Hometown: Houston, Texas Undergraduate Institution: Vassar College, Poughkeepse, New York Major: Economics and Psychology I love TU Law because all of the professors and administration know each of their students on a personal level and take interest in their lives. Plus, the city of Tulsa has such a wonderful cultural scene -- from monthly artwalks and museums to great food, music, and shopping. If you know where to look, Tulsa really has it all. Since the day I accepted my offer from TU Law, I knew I wanted to work in Houston. With my goal in mind, I worked towards achieving my dream job and being able to return to Texas. After graduation, I plan to move back and pursue a job with one of Texas’s largest firms, specializing in oil and gas law and corporate law. Zach Williams (2L) Hometown: Allen, Texas Undergraduate Institution: Texas A&M, College Station Major: Biology I chose The University of Tulsa College of Law because it is close to the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the staff and faculty I met when I toured the school were extremely friendly. I love the small class sizes, and the faculty is engaged with the students. The best things about living in Tulsa are its vibrant downtown, parks along the Arkansas River, and relatively light traffic. After graduation I plan to move back to Texas and establish a career in government or real estate work in Collin County. Komron Takmil (2L) Hometown: Dallas, Texas Undergraduate Institution: University of Utah, Salt Lake City Major: Business Marketing I was raised in Dallas and my initial attraction to TU Law was the close proximity to home for my wife and me. It is an easy three-an-a-half-hour drive from Tulsa to Dallas for us to see our family. It was also important for me, as a non-traditional student interested in energy law, to attend a law school that offers a personalized experience with a strong energy and sustainable resources law program. From the moment we arrived at TU for our campus visit, we knew this was where I belonged. We originally planned to move back to Texas after I graduate, but we have decided to stay in Tulsa because of the incredible welcoming nature of the local legal community; the opportunities for young professionals, especially in the energy industry; and the low cost of living means a high quality of life to raise our family. Cathleen Day (2L) Hometown: Houston, Texas Undergraduate Institution: American University, Washington, DC Major: Business Administration with focus on Entrepreneurship A mentor of mine in Houston recommended The University of Tulsa College of Law to me. The reputation the school has in Texas is outstanding, and the Access to Legal Eduction Scholoarship for incoming students from Texas made TU Law the most economical option for me. What I love most about TU Law is the small class sizes and the professors. I work best in a smaller setting. My classmates all know my name, and each professor brings a different skill set to provide students a stellar education. The city is great, too. Whether I’m running along the Arkansas River, attending a First Friday Art Crawl in the Brady Arts District, or seeing an off-Broadway musical, Tulsa has it all! After graduation I want to start my career in law as a prosecutor in the District Attorney’s Office in Houston or Austin. Texans choose TU College of Law. (2015-2016) The ALES is automatically awarded to eligible admitted students and is renewed each year as long as the student remains in good academic standing Full-Time $ 36,152 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. ALES - 18,000 Effective Tuition $ 18,152 Qualified students may receive additional merit-based scholarships in conjunction with the ALES. 100% of TU Law students received scholarships/tuition benefits in 2015. TU Law graduates work in Texas. Katherine Armstrong (JD ‘14) Legal Counsel, Global Litigation, Shell Oil Company Houston, Texas Upon visiting TU Law, I was surprised at the number of Texas connections the school had. For instance, several of the faculty and staff has worked in Texas, several Texas firms and companies recruit from TU Law, and several extracurricular courses were specific to Texas Bar subject matter. With such a plethora of connections, I felt comfortable about finding a job in Texas after graduation. The substance and the professors at TU Law pushed me outside of my comfort zone and instilled the confidence and skills I needed to be successful upon starting my first day as a lawyer. The legal practice is rapidly changing, and TU Law recognizes those changes and provides opportunities to students so they will be marketable and competitive after graduation. Katie McGregor (JD ‘15) Attorney, Bailey Peavy Bailey, PLLC Houston, Texas During law school, I studied abroad in Dublin during summer of my 1L year., and I joined the Energy Law Journal and participated in multiple externships as a 2L and 3L. All of these experiences provided me with the knowledge and skills I regularly utilize in my current position at Bailey Peavy Bailey, PLLC. Currently, my practice focuses on mass torts and other areas of complex litigation. Initially, I was attracted to TU Law because of its statistics, such as strong Texas Bar pass rates, high employment rates, and low cost of living in Tulsa. I also liked that TU Law was a smaller school within driving distance from my hometown in Texas, the student culture was like one big family, and the Sustainable Energy and Resources Law program would help me break into some of the Texas’s energy job markets. Lane Wood (JD ‘07) Senior Associate, Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP Dallas, Texas I was already living in Oklahoma when I chose TU Law, but I knew that I wanted to return to Dallas following graduation. After speaking with several people already in Texas law firms, I learned that TU has a very good reputation in the Texas legal market with high graduate bar passage and employment rates. That and the competitive tuition rates made my decision very easy. Though my choice to attend TU Law was based on very practical reasons, I love the school because of the people. My professors were subject-matter experts who were passionate about the law. I received the support and encouragement I needed to excel while competing with other law students for Texas jobs. I give credit to TU’s robust health law program for giving me the edge I needed to secure my first health law job in Dallas. THE RESULTS The #RealCollege survey is the nation’s largest annual INDICATE: assessment of basic needs security among college students.
