First performed by The Royal Ballet in 1960, this charming romantic comedy begins with a spirited young girl, Lise, about to be married off by her mother, Widow Simone. Not wishing to marry the simple-witted son of the local wealthy farmer, Lise makes several attempts to run off with her true love, the less prosperous Colas. Roberta Marquez returns as Guest Artist to dance two farewell performances in one of her signature roles as the wayward daughter Lise. Francesca Hayward makes her debut as Lise and making their debuts Colas are Valentino Zucchetti and Marcelino Sambé. Generously supported by The Royal Opera House Endowment Fund.     Thursday 18 October 2018 Month of Sundays Festival for a fiver in November The Royal Opera House is throwing open its doors every Sunday in November for an immersive new festival programme at just £5 per person. Exclusive pop-up opera and ballet performances will animate the new Royal Opera House spaces; upcycling workshops will transform props of the past; and dance workshops will help you to limber up before you fall down the rabbit hole with Alice to drink tea at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Clara, a young Orchestra Orchestra of the girl, creeps downstairs on Christmas Eve to play with her favourite Royal Opera House present – a Nutcracker. But a mysterious magician, Drosselmeyer, is Conductor Koen Kessels waiting to sweep her off on a magical adventure. Stage Director Peter Wright Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of The Herr Drosselmeyer Gary Avis Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario, which Clara Iohna Loots is based on a fairytale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Lev Ivanov provided Hans-Peter/The Nutcracker Ricardo Cervera the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Dr Stahlbaum Christopher Saunders Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but Mrs Stahlbaum Elizabeth McGorian its combination of enchanting choreography and unforgettable music Fritz Thomas Bedford has since made it one of the best-loved of all ballets.     October 2019 Royal Ballet News – Company Departures Alastair Marriott, Principal Character ArtistArtist,,,, leaves The Royal Ballet after 30 years The Royal Ballet announces that Alastair Marriott , Principal Character Artist with The Royal Ballet, is to leave the Company after over 30 years. Director of The Royal Ballet Kevin O’Hare comments ‘I would like to thank Alastair for his invaluable contribution to the life of The Royal Ballet. As a distinguished Principal Character Artist he has appeared in a wealth of the Company’s repertory and worked with some of the leading figures from The Royal Ballet’s history including Kenneth MacMillan and Christopher Wheeldon . As a choreographer he has contributed to the canon of The Royal Ballet with the many new works created especially for the Company and for The Royal Ballet School. I wish him continued success in the future’. Alastair Marriott comments ‘After completing my education at The Royal Ballet School, I joined the Company in 1988, becoming a Soloist in 1996 and a Principal Character Artist in 2002. I choreographed my first professional ballet for The Royal Ballet in 2003 and my works for the Company include six one act main stage pieces.
