Reprint. This appears to be a selection of shorter works of Yaakov Shabtai, an important figure in Israeli fiction; a talented writer who died in his 40s. His novel, Past Continuous, is a masterpiece of modernist fiction--in Hebrew, it is a continuous river flow of words; in English translation, the text at least is broken up into paragraphs. Even so, the sentences are long and complex, the text flowing from one character to another character, without breaks into chapters, and moving forwards and backwards in time and space, to the early days of settlement and struggle with the founding of the state of Israel, or even further back, to the cities and villages of central Europe and the Holocaust. Past Continuous becomes a closed loop, the ending circling back to the opening lines. It is a tour de force. Surely, if Shabtai had lived, he would have been a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.Uncle Peretz Takes Off is rather a mixed bag. Im not sure that every story works, or even belongs in this collection, but it shows a talented young writer testing out his material. The best stories are concerned with an extended family, with several generations living together under one roof, and the aunts and uncles and cousins, some living in Europe or the US. The tone varies across these stories, with some of them being rather comic, some with a touch of tragedy. The grandparents are a strong presence, and represent the traditional past. The next two generations are losing touch with this: The Sabbath prohibitions were of no consequence in my eyes, as they were of none in the eyes of my parents. But not to the grandmother, who obeys all the kosher laws and the traditions of the Sabbath: And on Fridays, after setting the table in her room with the two glass candlesticks, which were decorated with colored crystals, and after covering the plaited challah loaf with its pink silk cloth, she would get dressed in her Sabbath dress and put on her wig. She did this with serene concentration and a ceremonious air, repeatedly examining her face in the mirror. When she was finished, she would wind the clock, put it in its place and bless the candles. And then it was Sabbath. With her death, things change rapidly. That year we did not hold a Passover seder....The special Passover dishes--all kinds of bowls and jugs and pots of clay and copper and iron, vast plates and cups of white china rimmed with blue and gold, old silver forks and knives and spoons, ladles, salting boards and pastry boards, blue kettles and black pans--all these remained stored away... and then later sold off or put to new uses: the basin for ritual hand washing...was now used for soaking small items of laundry. Some of the other stories, rather than being elegiac, are comic, such as the story of Uncle Shmuel, the dreamer: Within the space of a few years he became responsible for executing large-scale, complex building projects, during the course of which he invented all kinds of new things that made the work easier, more efficient and more economical. In addition to these inventions, some that came to him in a sudden flash of illumination, he had other brainwaves too, such as a house composed of parts that could be changed from time to time, or a house that could be transported from place to place without any difficulty. And this before his decision to move to a kibbutz and start the business of the semi-automatic henhouses. I was rather reminded of Bruno Schulzs stories while reading these. Uncle Fink becomes rather legendary, with his dream of a travelling Palestinian circus, a scheme that never really takes off. Although rather a schemer, Shabtai portrays him rather lovingly, and seems to have a deep understanding of each of his characters. All in all a very enjoyable and satisfying read. Most highly recommended.
