Fancy Meeting You Here: Pioneers of the Concept Album Todd Decker Abstract: The introduction of the long-playing record in 1948 was the most aesthetically signi½cant tech- nological change in the century of the recorded music disc. The new format challenged record producers and recording artists of the 1950s to group sets of songs into marketable wholes and led to a ½rst generation of concept albums that predate more celebrated examples by rock bands from the 1960s. Two strategies used to unify concept albums in the 1950s stand out. The ½rst brought together performers unlikely to col- laborate in the world of live music making. The second strategy featured well-known singers in song- writer- or performer-centered albums of songs from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s recorded in contemporary musical styles. Recording artists discussed include Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, and Rosemary Clooney, among others. After setting the speed dial to 33 1/3, many Amer- icans christened their multiple-speed phonographs with the original cast album of Rodgers and Hammer - stein’s South Paci½c (1949) in the new long-playing record (lp) format. The South Paci½c cast album begins in dramatic fashion with the jagged leaps of the show tune “Bali Hai” arranged for the show’s large pit orchestra: suitable fanfare for the revolu- tion in popular music that followed the wide public adoption of the lp. Reportedly selling more than one million copies, the South Paci½c lp helped launch Columbia Records’ innovative new recorded music format, which, along with its longer playing TODD DECKER is an Associate time, also delivered better sound quality than the Professor of Musicology at Wash- 78s that had been the industry standard for the pre- ington University in St. -

He didn’t sing, dance or tell jokes. He never said a word when he performed. All he did was play the piano. Yet he captured the hearts and minds of millions of listeners all over the world, becoming the most popular solo jazz instrumentalist of his time—a feat even more remarkable because his was a time when jazz was dwarfed in popularity by the gigantic media event called rock ‘n’ roll. What was Garner’s secret? Above all, he was able to communicate his joy in making music with an immediacy that transcended all differences of age, nationality, race, education and musical background. Wherever and whenever he performed, in concert halls as a soloist or with symphony orchestras or in a wide variety of nightclubs, he reached out to each member of the audience, creating the illusion that he was playing just for that person. “I don’t know what I do or how I do it;” he once said, “but with me it’s the relaxation and the feeling. I relive my life at the piano. I just like to look at people and play and smile, and get them on my side.” Garner was a natural. He was born into a musical family—in Pittsburgh, on June 15, 1923— and by the age of three he was playing the piano. -

Each album contains a newly discovered, unreleased bonus track. Utilizing the Plangent Process playback system for analog tape, these new transfers were remastered and, when needed, remixed by the Grammy® winning Garner team. The Octave Remastered Series continues Garner’s resurgence, following his return to the top of the Billboard Jazz chart with 2015’s Grammy-nominated The Complete Concert by the Sea, which was the first release from the Erroll Garner Jazz Project—a collective formed to curate Garner’s monumental archive. The Garner Jazz Project followed The Complete Concert by the Sea with the critically acclaimed, newly unearthed studio record Ready Take One in 2016, and the midnight concert album Nightconcert, which reached #1 on the iTunes and Amazon jazz charts upon its release in 2018. THE CHRONICLE ROSEBUD RETIREMENT VILLAGE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 One for all you girls in the Village Clint Eastwood in 1962 about the time he was playing Rowdy Yates in Rawhide Message from Deb – July 2018 It was with much pleasure that we welcomed two new Residents to our Village in June. We send a very warm welcome to Eleanor Ashton and Margot O’Rourke. We do hope you settle in quickly to your new home and the Village and enjoy the variety of activities available. Residents will have noticed quite a bit of activity in the Village. Apologies if this is causing any inconvenience and at times deterring from the look of the Village. However, with various tradesmen, concrete trucks, deliveries and skips at least we can prove that the Village is on the improve. Currently there is various work being undertaken on seven Units, with another four scheduled to follow. I think this is a very exciting time and the Units are looking fabulous on completion. The building team is very efficient and cohesive and their work is of a high standard. They are also very obliging and helpful to deal with. The Resident Forum agreed to make changes to the garden entrance of the Village. I will be meeting with a representative from Wise Employment to have a Work for the Dole worker to assist with gardening works. A worker will be available for 25 hours a week over six months, with Eric Lee supervising the worker. My priorities are the entrance, the rockery, the lake area and a garden in Floral Court. -
