Ireland were contacted in January 2003 and asked whether they would like to participate in the Working Group to produce a new Red List. The core Working Group, from the first meeting held in February 2003, consisted of botanists in Britain who had a good working knowledge of the British and Irish flora and could commit their time and effort towards the two-year project. Other botanists who had expressed an interest but who had limited time available were consulted on an appropriate basis. An Ecological Database of the British Flora
An Ecological Database of the British Flora submitted by Helen Jacqueline Peat for examination for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biology University of York October 1992 Abstract The design and compilation of a database containing ecological information on the British Flora is described. All native and naturalised species of the Gymnospermae and Angiospermae are included. Data on c.130 characteristics concerning habitat, distribution, morphology, physiology, life history and associated organisms, were collected by both literature searching and correspondence with plant ecologists. The evolutionary history of 25 of the characteristics was investigated by looking at the amount of variance at each taxonomic level. The variation in pollination mechanisms was found at high taxonomic levels suggesting these evolved, and became fixed, early on in the evolution of flowering plants. Chromosome number, annualness, dichogamy and self-fertilization showed most variance at low taxonomic levels, suggesting these characteristics have evolved more recently and may still be subject to change. Most of the characteristics, however, eg. presence of compound leaves, height and propagule length showed variance spread over several taxonomic levels suggesting evolution has occurred at different times in different lineages. The necessity of accounting for phylogeny when conducting comparative analyses is discussed, and two methods allowing this are outlined. Using these, the questions: 'Why does stomatal distribution differ between species?' and 'Why do different species have different degrees of mycorrhizal infection?' were investigated. Amphistomaty was found to be associated with species of unshaded habitats, those with small leaves and those with hairy leaves, and hypostomaty with woody species, larger leaves and glabrous leaves. -
The Flora of Fair Isle
The Flora of Fair Isle Camila Vaitea Quinteros Peñafiel 2016 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the MSc in the Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants i Abstract Fair Isle, a small island located between Orkney and Shetland just off the northern tip of the British Isles has not enjoyed the same intensity of study of its biodiversity, in particular of the native flora, as other equally remote areas of the British Isles. This project involved surveying the entire flora of Fair Isle that comprises 19 monads (1km2), which were assessed through a qualitative floristic survey by recording the presence of plant species. This information enabled a comprehensive checklist of 238 species, classified into 27 orders, 59 families and 116 genera according to APG IV. Of the total number of species, 211 are native to the British Isles where 7 are considered under threat and 8 nationally scarce, the rest 27 are introduced species. A description was done for 9 different habitats that dominate the island. These were verified by the application of TWINSPAN and MAVIS which generated 16 NVC communities. It is hoped that the results found in this project emphasize the importance of Fair Isle regarding its flora, especially considering that it is home to 55% of the native species found on Shetland and that it has a wide range of plant communities, which are either missing or under serious threat in the British Isles. ii Acknowledgements The following people deserve special thanks for the support and company throughout the development of this thesis: My amazing supervisors Alex Twyford & Sally Eaton, of whom I feel very lucky to have and proud of the work that we have done together. -

A floristic survey of Fair Isle Fair Isle is a small isolated island located off the northern tip of Great Britain. Recognised internationally for rare migratory birds and important seabird colonies, the flora of Fair Isle has received far less attention. To rectify this, we present the first comprehensive floristic study of the island. A botanical survey was performed for each monad, and habitat information was collated following the NCC Phase 1 habitat survey method. These data were compiled to give a comprehensive checklist of 317 species, classified into 31 orders, 68 families and 191 genera according to APG IV. Of the total number of species, 254 are native to Great Britain and the remaining 63 are aliens. The list includes 10 species under threat, 7 nationally scarce and 1 nationally rare species.
