Re-vamping Visual Music The man behind Kripa Unplugged

From his youthful days at A-division league teams, Aman Pratap Adhikary dreamt of scoring something big. Check in Baker’s Den, Bhatbhateni, Kathmandu

Baker’s Den is probably one of the finest gourmet bakers in town. Here you can enjoy sumptuous and heavenly confectionery, but the place is not just for the sweet toothed. There are a variety of sandwiches, patties, and wraps too. Baker’s Den accommodates a moderate amount of people (17 to 18) at a time, and a detached, petite coffee shop next door is also a part of the establishment. The pâtisserie highly recommends the croissants and foot long sandwiches. Baker’s Den is the go-to place for cakes with personalized messages, images for birthdays, anniversaries, and so forth. If you’re looking for a wedding cake to steal the show, look no further, Baker’s Den is the answer to your prayers.

The votes (and likes) are in, and we have the winners of TheNepal’s first bike reality show, BajajTop Pulsar Dare Venture 3

TEXT BY ABHISHEK MISHRA

he ride of a lifetime is what they are of the land, and how there is a lot up there that calling it now. The route from Pokhara we are yet to experience. But what it came down to Tatopani to Jomsom to Chaile and to was the competition. Santosh Adhikari took back, that’s what they went through. the top honor of Most Popular Rider, with Aqib Rough terrain, muddy and narrow Abdul Atique being bestowed with the Most Troads, waterfalls, tasks, and community work Disciplined Rider title, and Anil Kushwaha given – all of it made the first season of Bajaj Pulsar the award for the Most Daring Rider, all decided Dare Venture a success. The entire show focused by the people through SMS voting and Facebook on the intestinal fortitude of the riders besides likes. And now here’s a chance to know more showcasing the landscape of Nepal, the people about the top three:

Aqib Abdul Atique Most Disciplined Rider At first glance Aqib seems like a shy lad. And while he is soft spoken and carries himself well, what stands out is his sense of humor and that big beaming smile that comes out once in a while. Having completed his BBA, he promptly started work as a Business Development Officer at an IT company. What is little known though is that he satiates his artistic side by being a part of The Room Painters, a graffiti group involved in street art. Aqib’s foray into Bajaj Pulsar Dare Venture did not come as a surprise to most of his friends; he has had nearly eight years of uphill moto-adventures after all. He has spent a lot of time on his bike exploring new places, and the road to Chaile was another (rather big) feather in his cap. Aqib’s riding was mostly immaculate and the best I got to know him was when we rode back together from Nagdhunga to Kathmandu. In those couple of hours I realized how fast and how much in control the riders had been all this time. It is something that comes with riding constantly and working in a team sphere, headed by Marshalls like the ones we had from Bikers Nepal. Aqib was always in control, and was a constant worker during the community tasks and challenges. There aren’t many jokes that I can share about him here, but take my word when I say that he is one funny man who has the best punchlines. All in all, a well deserved recipient of the Most Disciplined Rider. Kudos to you Aqib Abdul Atique! 17

Santosh Adhikari Most Popular Rider And that leads us to the big winner himself, Santosh Adhikari. A chef by profession, he certainly showed us that he was no slack when it came to the road. Consistent and dependable, Adhikari’s prior experience paid dividends as well since he had already been to Lomanthang and was familiar with the terrain in and around Upper Mustang. Santosh was a quiet man, usually so composed you’d mistake it for a lack of desire. Not true, he wanted it just as much as anyone there. Talking to him you realized that he was here for a reason. One can watch his interview from the Attitude Test on Pulsar Nepal’s YouTube Channel to get a glimpse of his self- assurance and confidence. On the road he partook in all the mischief, rode like a champion like everyone else, and was humble to boot. Let’s not mince words, Santosh was probably not everyone’s first pick to win, but that just means he worked extra hard to get the support. While others can bank on that without breaking a sweat, those who work for it are the horses for the long haul. Here are a few words from the man himself: “I look upon my participation on the show as a once in a lifetime opportunity and an achievement that will be cherished and remembered till the very end. I’ll never forget getting the accolades for the Most Popular Rider in the very first season of Dare Venture and creating history with Nepal’s first bike reality show. Overall, becoming a familiar face among millions matters a lot. All thanks to Bajaj for giving me the chance to do that.”

Anil Kushwaha: Most Daring Rider Anil Kushwaha gave us some of the funniest and most genuine moments of the journey. Hailing from Rautahat, Kushwaha is very much the family man. (His son was actually born when he was on the show). He is grounded and humble, and during his maiden trip to Mustang, he lived a life that he always knew was out there. His humor would spontaneously come out in the most real fashion. During one of the tasks in Chaile, when the contestants had to hunt for a Timex watch, Anil was searching one of the caves when he heard a great “swooshing” sound. Convinced it was a creature of the mountains, he quickly retreated and narrated the story to me. I tried to explain to him that it was the underground breeze making those sounds, but he was convinced that it was a Yeti groaning! Anil has a fear of heights, and it didn’t help when he had to jump off ledges in Pokhara. He was pacing and sweating when we got to the zipline. But he pulled And the curtain falls on the himself together and finally did it. The first season of Bajaj Pulsar Dare greatest sense of achievement was under his belt...until he was told that he would Venture, one that came with so have to bungee jump next. His face went many stories and adventures, some so blank that we feared for him. Then seen on TV and a few experienced the man paced for a while, possibly first hand. The 10 riders have deliberated a lot, and called home (not to say goodbye, I’m hoping). But he did it; become recognizable faces, and despite all the anxiety and fear, he still one hopes it’s all uphill for them went through with it and then had the henceforth. The press team, TV biggest smile on his face post-jump. crew, mechanics, drivers, doctors, That’s the Anil Kushwaha we all remember, the one that conquered his Marshals, and everyone from fears. And that’s why the most Daring hospitality played a part to make it Rider Award sits on his mantle. happen but mostly, a big bow goes to Bajaj for making this show a reality. See you for Season 2. Sweet Secrets was rather quiet when we visited, in contrast to the time “A” first visited the store. “People kept coming and asking for the owner,” he recalls. “They had all sorts of questions that they wanted him to answer.” But this lack of customers in no way suggests a lull in their business. With outlets in other major cities like Pokhara, Butwal, and Itahari, besides a website and the fact that they take in phone orders from people who are too shy to step into a sex store, Poudel boasts of around 10,000 customers in his database. There have also been plans to open a condom store in Thamel, as well as to create their own line of contraceptives. When we talked, Poudel also mentioned plans to upgrade the Sweet Secret website in order to add a chat box. All his customers are above 18, with the age group of 25 to 30 frequenting the shop the most. When we visited the store, products for women outnumbered those for men - with 60% of their customers being female, this seemed like a deliberate choice. Sweet Secret has tried to be more female friendly but since the only store attendant was male, it was a bit awkward for us to ask questions without giggles and awkward pauses. When we did get over this initial hurdle, it was like being in any other store. Unlike India, where selling sex toys are deemed illegal since they are labeled as pornography, the Nepali government has taken a rather liberal stand. Shops like Sweet Secret have gone a long way in promoting safe sex, all while providing a safe outlet for the sexual desires of their patrons. Think//Fr!day Films 30
