A man is accused of murdering his fam- ily in a townhome in Surrey Sunday. Mahendra Singh Johal, 66, appeared in Surrey provincial court yesterday on two charges of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Investigators said Johal is married to a woman identified in court documents as Sukhwinder Kaur Johal, 35, who police found clinging to life when they arrived at a townhouse in the 6300 block of 126th Street. Police found the woman’s sons Amarjit Gill, 17, and his 15-year-old brother Ra- manjit Gill dead inside the home. Sukhdeep Sandhu, 13, a friend of the boys, said their biological father had died in an accident in India. He added the boys’ mother had been struggling to adjust to life in Canada. “[Amarjit] told me, ‘Everyday my uncle is fighting with my mom,’” Sandhu said. South Asians often use the term “uncle” as a sign of respect. Balraj Basra, 15, said the pair had arrived from India with their mother about eight months ago and were planning to move into another apartment later this month. “I’m sad,” Basra said. “I’m crying. King books back Four books that have been long out of print by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be published again under a new deal with Beacon Press brokered by King’s youngest son. Dexter King called it a historic partnership that will bring his fa- ther’s words to a global audi- ence. Beacon, a department of the Unitarian Universalist Associ- ation, publishes books on social justice, human rights and racial equality. The Boston-based publisher will release new editions of Stride Toward Freedom,Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Commu- nity?,Trumpet of Conscience and Strength to Love in 2010. Jailed scribe deal A journalist jailed for four months in Iran on charges of es- pionage has a book deal. Iranian-American Roxana Sabe- ri, 32, is working on a memoir that HarperCollins will publish in March 2010. Saberi’s book, cur- rently untitled, will tell of her ar- rest in January, her initial sen- tence to eight years in prison and her release in May after being granted a two-year sus- pended sentence. According to a statement issued yesterday by HarperCollins, the memoir will also be “a penetrat- ing look at Iranian society.”
