Leif Dahlberg var redaktör då som nu, och två av de dåtida bidragsgivarna - Lars-Åke Skalin och jag själv - återfinns i föreliggande artikelsamling. Dock finns påfallande skillnader mellan de två numren; framför allt att TFL nr 2-3 I993 uteslutande består av litte­ raturvetenskapliga uppsatser medan dagens texter är författade av forskare från en rad olika discipliner. Förutom tre litteraturvetare - Dahlberg, Skalin och jag själv - bidrar Lars-Christer Hyden och Pia Biilow, bägge knutna till Tema Kommunikation i Linköping, Mirjam Eladhari, ludolog - hon bedriver teoretisk forskning om och utvecklar dataspel - vid högskolan i Visby, Galina Lindquist, socialantropolog, Staffan Carlshamre, teoretisk filosof och Staffan Hellberg, nordist, de tre sistnämnda vid Stockholms universitet. Denna ämnesmässiga spridning speglar utvecklingen i den berättelseteoretiska forskningen under senare tid (dock under en längre period än de senaste elva åren). Fenomenen och begreppen 'berättelse' och 'berättande' har visat sig fruktbara inom lingvistik, filosofi, historieveten­ skap, psykologi, medicin, filmvetenskap, etnologi, antropologi, juridik - ja, det är svårare att ange vetenskaper där narratologisk begreppsbildning inte gjort sig gällande - och omvänt har berättelseteorierna berikats av kontak­ terna med utomlitterära vetenskaper. De nämnda artiklarna presenterades ursprungligen som föredrag vid en narratologisk konferens vid Stockholms universitet 3-5 september 2004, initierad av lingvisten Östen Dahl och finansierad av Riksbankens Jubi­ leumsfond. Syftet med konferensen - och därmed även med föreliggande dubbelnummer - var att förstärka kommunikationen inom det vida fält som den berättelseteoretiska forskningen numera utgör. 3 Vad är en historia? Av Lars-Ake Skalin I detta paper anlägger jag synpunkter på vad som kan uppfattas som två olika sätt att teoretiskt närma sig frågan "Vad är en historia?" Det rör sig å den ena sidan om ett poetologiskt angreppssätt i Aristoteles anda, å den andra ett strukturalistiskt med vissa tillämningar i konstruktivistisk och kognitionsteoretisk riktning. Om termen "narratologi" inte reserveras enbart för den senare typen utan får gälla alla försök att teoretiskt beskriva natur, funktion och form hos företeelser vi refererar till som "berättande", "berättelser" och "fiktion", skulle man kunna tala om två olika slag av narratologier.' (Detta är ingen uttömmande klassifikation - antalet an­ greppssätt behöver inte stanna vid två.) Strategin går ut på att konfrontera dessa båda narratologier med intuitioner som jag menar finns implicita i vardagsspråkets bruk av uttrycket "berätta en historia". Min fråga blir: Går det att utpeka så väsentliga skillnader mellan ansatserna att de inte i någon intressant mening kan sägas ställa frågor till samma "narrativa fält"?" I Tove Janssons Kometen kommer (1968) drar, som bekant, de tre figurer­ na Mumintrollet, Snusmumriken och det lilla djuret Sniff ut för att söka information om den komet som varslats. Färden och väntan blir långa, och när man ibland har behov av tidsfördriv sker detta med två typer av inslag, av vilka Snusmumriken står för båda. Han underhåller genom att framföra visor till ackompanjemang på munharmonika och han berättar historier. Vid ett tillfälle heter det så här: Det var en bra visa, sa mumintrollet. Men man fick inte klart för sig hur det gick för humlan och om maskeraden var rolig. Berätta nånting för oss i stället. Snusmumriken funderade en stund. Sen sa han: Berättade jag nånsin om dedär snorkarna jag träffade för några veckor sen? Nej, sa mumintrollet. Vad är en snork? [---J Dehär snorkarna var [... J mycket lika dig, sa Snusmumriken [... J.Jag menar konturerna. [Snorkens] Wlasyster [---J var helt och hållet täckt av ett fint mjukt ludd och hade pannlugg som hon ideligen borstade. 4 VAD ÄR EN HISTORIA? Så fånigt, sa mumintrollet. Mi hur gick det sen dJå, frågade Sniff. A, det hände ingenting särskilt, sa Snusmumriken. Hon vävde små sovmattor och kokade snälla soppor om man hade ont i magen. Sen gick hon med blommor bakom öronen och hade en guldring om vänstra foten. Men det är ju ingen historia,

He claims that “Capitalism itself has undergone a process of profound restructuring”, a process that is still underway. “As a consequence of this general overhauling of the capitalist system…we have witnessed… the incorporation of valuable segments of economies throughout the world into an interdependent system working as a unit in real time… a new communication system, increasingly speaking a universal, digital language” (Castells 1). Castells points out that this new communications system and the concomitant social structure has its effects on how identity is defined. The more networked we are, the more priority we attach to our sense of individual identity; “societies are increasingly structured around a bipolar opposition between the Net and the Self ” (3). He defines networks as follows: A network is a set of interconnected nodes. A node is the point at which a curve intersects itself. What a node is, concretely speaking, depends on the kind of concrete networks of which we speak. Networks are open structures, able to expand without limits, integrating new nodes as long as they are able to communicate within the network…. A network-based social structure is a highly dynamic, open system, susceptible to innovating without threatening its balance. The Performative Interactivity of Video Games. Master of Science (Communication Studies), August 2014, 113 pp., bibliography, 61 titles. This study examines the ways that videogames and live performance are informed by play theory. Utilizing performance studies methodologies, specifically personal narrative and autoperformance, the project explores the embodied ways that gamers know and understand videogames. A staged performance, “Shall We Play a Game?,” was crafted using Brechtian theatre techniques and Conquergood’s three A’s of performance, and served as the basis for the examination.     A MATTER OF INSIGNIFICANCE The MUD Puzzle Quest as Seductive Discourse Ragnhild Tronstad Previous attempts to analyse MUD1 quests from the perspective of herme- neutics revealed a number of problems connected to regarding questing as primarily an interpretative activity.2 Although interpretation is of funda- mental importance in order to solve a quest, and even if appropriation of the texts’ meaning to a certain extent may contribute to or enhance the player’s self-understanding,3 it does not seem appropriate to regard ”un- derstanding” or ”appropriation of meaning” as a goal in itself when it comes to questing. One indication of this is the fact that the text space in quests may be experienced as exhausted independently of any ”fusion of hori- zons” – that is, independent of the player’s experience of having reached a (more or less complete) understanding of the text. Of methodological problems arising when approaching the quest from the perspective of hermeneutics, the more severe one is perhaps that the several parts of the quest will then inevitably be judged according to their relation to the final meaning of the quest, instead of being related to the whole, as the whole of a quest is impossible to identify before a final meaning is reached. Reading the quest retrospectively, however, parts that didn’t contribute to this final meaning may easily be overlooked. Still, such insignificant parts do have great influence on the questing experience. To understand questing, therefore, we should approach the text as it functions in the process of questing, before the text space defined by its limits as a whole is hermeneutically exhausted.

In videogames play takes place in an artificially constructed environment – in gamespace. Gameplay occurs in gamespace. To understand videogames, it is essential to understand how their spaces are implicated in play. This thesis asks what are the relationships between play and space in videogames? This thesis examines the relationships between space and play by looking at how architecture is constructed in gamespace and by looking at gamespace as an architectonic construct. In short, this thesis examines the architecture in and of gamespace. The relationships between space and play in videogames are examined by looking at the structure of gamespace, by looking at the differences between real space and gamespace and by analysing architectural and spatial functionality. This thesis discovers a series of important relationships between space and play, arguing that gamespace is used to create, manipulate and control gameplay, while gameplay dictates and influences the construction of gamespace. Particular forms of play call for particular constructions of gamespace. Particular types of gamespace construct play in particular ways. This thesis identifies a number of ways in which gamespace is configured for play.
