CIHA Newsletter Home | Calendar | Login Volume: 1 Issue: 4 December 21, 2018 2018 McLeod Cup As we enter into the holiday break, that means it’s time for the annual tradition of the McLeod Cup, an event that both staff and students circle on their calendars. The McLeod Cup combines all participating staff, students and alumni into a pool and a live draft then takes place. A tournament style format is then played with a winning team being crowned at the end. A perfect way to let loose and see the lighter side of the students and staff before the holiday break. There would be four teams in total and about 50 participants in the tournament. The four goalies, who were team captains were Jackson Parsons, Francis Plant, Michael Lenhart, and CIHA Programs Coordinator Rejean Amyot. In a surprise twist, the staff would opt out of the draft and form their own team, leaving the 3 remaining goalies to select from students and alumni. We had several alumni join us for this year’s tournament. They were: Donovan Sebrango (Kitchener, OHL), Jake Jurgeneit (Nepean, CCHL), Owen Dunne (Nepean, CCHL), River Gull (Rockland, CCHL), Sam Mattie (Casselman, CCHL2), and Etienne Agius-Pease (Casselman, CCHL2). Once the teams were selected it was game on! Each team would play three games before the top two teams advanced to a one game final. While it was a friendly tournament, the competition was intense with the amount of highly skilled and competitive students and former professional hockey players involved. Once each team completed their games, two teams were left standing at the top: Team Parsons and Team Plant. They played an entertaining final game but it would be Team Parsons that would come out on top, winning the 2018 McLeod Cup! It was the perfect way to cap off the first three and a half months of school by bringing the CIHA family together one last time in 2018 before the students head back home for the holiday break! For more pictures, check out our Facebook page. See everyone in 2019! SCHOOL. Media Arts Field Trip The grade 8 and 10 students studying Media Arts had the privilege of touring the Bell Media Station in downtown Ottawa. During the tour, the boys were able to experience behind the scenes of a live CTV Morning Ottawa show and a live TSN 1200 broadcast, which is an all-sports talk radio station. The boys were able to observe the many moving parts and people behind the scenes as well as the on-air personalities like anchors, reporters and meteorologists, who are the most visible and well-known members of television news teams. The boys got to meet everyone from web-cast designers, news directors, social media managers, news writers, editors, broadcast technicians, audio engineers, and camera operators just to name a few. After an in-depth tour of how the Bell Media Station operates behind the scenes and how much detail goes into each segment and live show, the class was able to identify some media forms and explain how the conventions and techniques associated with them are used to create meaning. In addition, they also learned how to create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences using appropriate forms, conventions and techniques. Men's Health Presentation On November 19th, a former Registered Nurse at the Ottawa Cancer Clinic (specifically in the prostate cancer unit), and mother of teacher Rachel Waldie, Marian Waldie, came to speak with the students about men's health issues. She spoke with them about the signs and symptoms of prostate and testicular cancer, how to stay healthy and protect themselves and men's mental health. As part of our Movember Awareness Campaign, we wanted to give the boys first hand information and someone they could speak to and ask questions. It was a very interesting and informative presentation. Canadian War Museum Field Trip On December 3rd, the grade 10 Canadian History and the grade 11 American History classes went to the Canadian War Museum for a field trip. The day started with a World War II artifact presentation and activity. The boys were able to touch and try on several artifacts from WWII. Then, the Canadian History class toured the WWII section of the museum and the American History class went to look at the Cold War exhibit. Finally, both classes met in the tank room where we were lucky enough to get a tour from retired Tank Commander, Don Allen. Overall, it was a great day and a fantastic hands-on experience for the boys! Little Bags of Goodness As a House Team activity, students and staff left little blue bags on doorsteps around Rockland for a great cause! Our Little Bags of Goodness Project is in support of Operation Come Home, which helps homeless youth in Ottawa and the surrounding area. Each of the boys left a note in a bag with a list of items we wished to collect including mitts, hats, shampoo, soap and warm coats. Winter, especially around the holiday season, can be a cold and lonely time especially for the homeless. The residents of Rockland were extremely generous with their donations and we are excited to present all of the donations to Operation Come Home. House Teams Update We capped of 2018 with a very sweet and messy festive event - The Ginger Bread House Challenge. Each House Team was given a variety of Ginger Bread kits from which to make a truly creative masterpiece! A few of the teams got completely sidetracked as they devoured the bags of icing and candy decorations and were unable to create anything very spectacular with what was left! Others went all out and masterfully created scenes of the Zombie Apocalypse (Crosby), and the Minion Massacre (Matthews). However, Team McDavid pulled out all the stops and designed a stunning Ginger Bread Tree House. So in wrapping up 2018, Team Crosby are still showing their strength with a sizable lead over the other teams as they sit at 392 points. Leading the charge are Team McDavid with 286 points, followed by Team Price with 225, Team Matthews with 216, and Team Karlsson with 214. HOCKEY. Three Students Named to Midget AA All-Star Team Congratulations to Leo Haban, Darius Mamianskum and Walter Brown who were selected to represent CIHA at the HEO Minor AA All-Star Game. The game took place on Sunday, December 16th at 4pm at the North Grenville Municipal Centre in Kemptville. Leo (01) is in his second year at CIHA, playing Midget AA in both of his seasons. He currently leads his team in goals (12), tied for the lead in assists (7) and leads in points (19). Last season he had 9 points in 25 games. Darius (01) is a 4 year veteran at CIHA and in his 3rd season with Midget AA. He has also played a combined 19 games and counting last year and this year with Midget White AAA. He is the team's second leading scorer with 12 points in 17 games. Walter (02), joined CIHA in January of 2017, and is now in his 2nd full season both with Midget AA. He currently has 3 assists in 16 games and is an assistant captain. He has also played 9 games for Midget White AAA, registering 1 assist. Congratulations again to all three boys who have earned a well-deserved spot on the All-Star team! Edward Bradley and Alumni Named to Great Britian U20 Team Congratulations to current student Edward Bradley, who was named to Great Britain’s U20 National Team. Alum Cameron Pound (3 years at CIHA) also made the team, while alumni James Clarke (4 years at CIHA), Patrick Larkin (2 years at CIHA), and Sam Talbot (1 year at CIHA) are on the long-list reserves. Edward, a defenseman in his 4th year at CIHA is the captain of Midget White AAA and has 17 points in 21 games so far this season. Great Britain will play in Division II, Group A in Tallinn, Estonia from January 13th-19th. They will play Estonia, Korea, Lithuania, Romania, and Spain. Click here for more information. Bayley Harewood - Great Britain U18 Tryouts Best of luck to student Bayley Harewood, who is currently trying out for the Great Britain U18 squad. Bayley has 12 points in 22 games for Midget White this season. Bayley doesn't turn 16 until the summer, so getting an invite to the U18 team is a huge accomplishment and he should be very proud of his work so far and his continuing development! Alum Semyon Der-Arguchintsev Featured in the Athletic Semyon played 2 years at CIHA, compiling 107 points in 77 games, and winning the Hockey Eastern Ontario Rookie of the Year in 2016. He was then drafted 27th overall by the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League and in 2018 he was drafted 76th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He recently signed his entry level contract with Toronto, and currently plays for Peterborough. Read below for an excerpt from the Athletic's Scott Wheeler and his story on alum Semyon Der-Arguchintsev. More than 300 kilometres east of Peterborough, the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA) sits on the banks of the Ottawa River dividing Ontario from Quebec. Its three buildings — a residence, a cafeteria and a two-pad arena — sit between a storage facility just off of Highway 17 on the outskirts of Rockland, a town of 11,000 people. It’s here, after prompting from a friend who doesn’t play hockey anymore, where Der-Arguchintsev first made the 10-hour trip from Moscow to Canada to pursue his dream.
