Sep. 2021 THE UNRAVELERS Rasa, Becoming, and the Buddhist Novel By Michael Barber, BA, MFA A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD Department of English and Creative Writing University of Roehampton 2017 Barber 1 ABSTRACT The Unravelers is a Buddhist novel of literary fiction, which to my knowledge is the first in the last one hundred years to synthesize the Buddhist teachings and values found in the suttas of the Pāli Canon, the theory of ancient Indian kāvya literature, and the latest stylistic and structural innovations of contemporary literary fiction. The narrative follows four characters from the moment of their deaths as they manipulate the process of becoming—the mental act of creating and entering into “worlds.” The novel depicts the characters’ development of dispassion for a variety of realms, resulting in their eventual return to the human world with the motivation necessary to practice the Buddhist path. My critical essay opens with an introduction to kāvya and Theravāda Buddhist concepts that are particularly relevant to the process of creating a fictional world— namely, saṅkhāra (fabrication) and bhava (becoming)—and the inherent karma of writing. Section II “Literary Review” explores narrative modes from Theravāda Buddhist literature and develops them through experimental narrative modes of contemporary literary fiction. Section III discusses the depiction of becoming, fabrication, and dispassion through the novel’s characters. Section IV “Rasa,” explains the theory of how a reader experiences the work’s savor, while relating the use of rasa in The Unravelers to the early Buddhist kāvyas (the Pāli Canon’s Udāna and Dhammapada, and two works by Aśvaghoṣa). Section V evaluates the classic use of Buddhist concepts and metaphors in Aśvaghoṣa’s Handsome Nanda as compared to The Unravelers. Section VI examines Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums as a forerunner to the genre of the Buddhist novel and Keith Kachtick’s Hungry Ghost as archetypal. Section VII concludes by detailing The Unravelers’ contribution to the Buddhist novel.     Excerpt: Chapters 1 and 2 Babylonian London, Nimrod, and the Secret War Against God by Jeremy James A few years ago, while doing research into the ultra-rich families that control Europe from behind the scenes, I chanced upon a curious episode in the life of former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. While the British were celebrating the tercentenary of the so-called 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688 – when William of Orange, a Dutch member of a leading branch of the European elite, was vested with the throne of England by a powerful consortium of London merchants and financiers – she came to London to formally unveil a monument at Covent Garden. 1 www.zephaniah.eu The public was not aware that the unveiling was in part a celebration of the ingenious scheme that led to this dramatic transfer of British sovereignty, in effect the silent conquest of Britain by the European elite in 1688. The merchants and financiers concerned had erected in the same location in 1694 a version of the same monument, a tall stone column with a sundial pediment, that Queen Beatrix was now unveiling. The replacement was a near perfect replica of the 40-foot sundial column that the wealthy consortium had erected nearly three centuries before (The design by the original stonemason had been preserved by the British Museum): The original column, Original design, 1694. now in Weybridge, Kent. [The original sundial pediment was omitted.] The original column was officially dismantled and placed in storage in 1773, seemingly because the area of the city where it was located had become so rowdy and decadent, with frequent public brawls and acts of indecency, that the dignity of this mighty symbol was being eroded.

Because of the rising growth of the traffic during the industrialization there was the problem that there were not enough possibilities to transport their goods from place to place and that’s the reason why they were searching for a way to transport over the Thames. Five building companies and 432 people worked on Tower Bridge till it was finished. Today Tower Bridge belongs to the Bridge House Estates, a charity organization of the City of London Corporation.

Planets, Columns, and the Atlas Coelestis The basic plan of Babylonian London was established in the 17 th century, or perhaps even earlier. This meant it was heavily influenced by the science of Astronomy as it was then understood. Also, at that time, there was no clear line of demarcation between the physical science of Astronomy and the arcane 'science' of Astrology. It is well known that, among the vast archive of material left by Isaac Newton, the great mathematician, is an extensive catalogue of papers and essays relating to Astrology and Alchemy. The people who built Babylonian London were the same ones who created the Royal Society, the organization that laid the foundations for modern science and established the principles and methodology by which science should be conducted. They were the people who eliminated the Creator from the study of Creation, who rejected the LORD God of the Bible, and who declared that man himself, through the disciplined use of his mind and his creative faculty, could solve every problem that came before him. Many of these men were Rosicrucians, a gnostic society that flourished in Italy and Germany in the late Renaissance period and which promoted the Babylonian philosophy in all walks of life with extraordinary stealth and cunning. The works of Shakespeare, for example, are steeped in Rosicrucian philosophy and consistently opposed to Biblical Christianity. The same elite group organized the so-called 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688 which handed the sovereignty of England to the ultra- rich cabal who controlled mainland Europe.

For those familiar with Reformation doctrine, practice, and history, it may be suffice for them to know that this commentary is religiously conservative, Reformed, Protestant, and adheres to the doctrine of the second stage of the Reformation. The second stage of the Reformation started in the sixteenth century with e.g., sacramental reform, and continued till the mid seventeenth century with such reforms as the removal of the Apocrypha from the covers of Holy Writ, and the Federalist understanding of original sin replacing the Augustinian understanding. However, as a general, though not absolute rule, I have kept doctrinal matters in the areas agreed at the first stage of the Reformation, that is, the Lutheran Reformation, only occasionally finding it necessary to go to the second stage of the Reformation. In particular, I find it necessary to go to the second stage of the Reformation in rejecting Lutheran sacramentalism, specifically, the Lutheran idea that there is a “sacrament” of auricular confession, not instituted in Scripture but later instituted by proper “human” authority in the church ( Augsburg Confession 1:11,13; 2:4) (even though this view remains in the Lutheran Augsburg Confession , in practice Lutherans in general came to progress beyond this notion, and moved to the second stage of the Reformation on this matter by using a General Confession in a church service, thus in general rejecting auricular confession in practice , although it is found in some Lutheran Churches), together with the Lutheran ideas of consubstantiation in the Lord’s Supper, and baptismal regeneration.
