There is however one musical moment within the film when Deidre Murphy - Kathleen Wilhoite - whips out a guitar and plays a few lines from Woody Guthrie’s I Ride an Old Paint for Lorenzo (the phone rings, taking Augusto away from the performance): Lyrics: The opening credits feature music in an African dialect by Gonda Traditional Entertainers. The lyrics for the song aren’t available on the internet at time of writing and are beyond the paygrade of this site. The song became popular after being heard in the film, and is available in a number of releases - this version suggests it’s a “song about a young lady”: Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus runs under the tail credits and under testaments from ALD survivors who have taken Lorenzo’s Oil … as the voices blur and fade, the music begins to occupy the foreground. One English translation of the original Latin, though not strictly line-for-line: The translator, here, offered these notes: * Several people have commented on this, so I thought that I might elaborate. The phrase in the original Latin hymn is "Cujus latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine", whose approximate translation I have used here. However, in the available editions of both the Byrd and the Mozart score, the word 'aqua' ('water') is omitted and the word 'unda' ('whence') inserted. The 'et' (and) is also omitted in the Byrd text, but not in the Mozart, which makes for rather awkward Latin (and one which I had much trouble translating accurately). The origins (and purpose) of this change is unclear; I hope to research this matter further at a later date. ** Referring to the eucharist in the Roman Catholic tradition, in which the sacrament was often referred to as being a "foretaste of heaven”.
