There is however one musical moment within the film when Deidre Murphy - Kathleen Wilhoite - whips out a guitar and plays a few lines from Woody Guthrie’s I Ride an Old Paint for Lorenzo (the phone rings, taking Augusto away from the performance): Lyrics: The opening credits feature music in an African dialect by Gonda Traditional Entertainers. The lyrics for the song aren’t available on the internet at time of writing and are beyond the paygrade of this site. The song became popular after being heard in the film, and is available in a number of releases - this version suggests it’s a “song about a young lady”: Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus runs under the tail credits and under testaments from ALD survivors who have taken Lorenzo’s Oil … as the voices blur and fade, the music begins to occupy the foreground. One English translation of the original Latin, though not strictly line-for-line: The translator, here, offered these notes: * Several people have commented on this, so I thought that I might elaborate. The phrase in the original Latin hymn is "Cujus latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine", whose approximate translation I have used here. However, in the available editions of both the Byrd and the Mozart score, the word 'aqua' ('water') is omitted and the word 'unda' ('whence') inserted. The 'et' (and) is also omitted in the Byrd text, but not in the Mozart, which makes for rather awkward Latin (and one which I had much trouble translating accurately). The origins (and purpose) of this change is unclear; I hope to research this matter further at a later date. ** Referring to the eucharist in the Roman Catholic tradition, in which the sacrament was often referred to as being a "foretaste of heaven”. CHAPTER 5 EPILOGUE It has been my aim in this thesis to address a two-fold proposition. Informed by my reading of the work of Gilles de Van, I have discovered that Verdi wished to realize a concept which he called posizione. He provided musical strategies which would delineate characters in their subjective and objective ‘position’ with regard to circumstance and to their relationship with other characters at any given moment of the operatic narrative. The term posizione was intended to denote a musico-dramatic mapping of the co-ordinates which could pinpoint this relationship. With Verdi’s concept in view I have investigated the posizione of Violetta Valéry’s character as it has evolved throughout the course of the operatic narrative of La traviata. In addressing the second facet of my proposition I have taken the term posizione into the broader context of its social implications for the character of Violetta and for women of suspect moral status. In order to do this I have investigated the literary and factual provenance of the narrative and the contemporary response of Despite Budden’s own speculative objection to the notion that Verdi compared Violetta with Giuseppina Strepponi, the possibility remains that the courtesan character elicited a special sympathy from Verdi. The life of Alexandre Dumas fils is the origin from which the narrative of La traviata is drawn. Dumas fils turned the experience of his own liaison with the courtesan Marie Duplessis into the novel La Dame aux Camélias which he later adapted for the stage. As characterized by Dumas, Duplessis, transformed into the more noble Marguerite Gautier, renounced her own happiness in order to save the reputation of the family to whom her lover Armand 192 Duval belonged.

  • Bellini's Norma
Bellini’s Norma - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are around 130 recordings of Norma in the catalogue of which only ten were made in the studio. The penultimate version of those was made as long as thirty-five years ago, then, after a long gap, Cecilia Bartoli made a new recording between 2011 and 2013 which is really hors concours for reasons which I elaborate in my review below. The comparative scarcity of studio accounts is partially explained by the difficulty of casting the eponymous role, which epitomises bel canto style yet also lends itself to verismo interpretation, requiring a vocalist of supreme ability and versatility. Its challenges have thus been essayed by the greatest sopranos in history, beginning with Giuditta Pasta, who created the role of Norma in 1831. Subsequent famous exponents include Maria Malibran, Jenny Lind and Lilli Lehmann in the nineteenth century, through to Claudia Muzio, Rosa Ponselle and Gina Cigna in the first part of the twentieth. Maria Callas, then Joan Sutherland, dominated the role post-war; both performed it frequently and each made two bench-mark studio recordings. Callas in particular is to this day identified with Norma alongside Tosca; she performed it on stage over eighty times and her interpretation casts a long shadow over. Artists since, such as Gencer, Caballé, Scotto, Sills, and, more recently, Sondra Radvanovsky have had success with it, but none has really challenged the supremacy of Callas and Sutherland. Now that the age of expensive studio opera recordings is largely over in favour of recording live or concert performances, and given that there seemed to be little commercial or artistic rationale for producing another recording to challenge those already in the catalogue, the appearance of the new Bartoli recording was a surprise, but it sought to justify its existence via the claim that it authentically reinstates the integrity of Bellini’s original concept in matters such as voice categories, ornamentation and instrumentation.
