ISSN 1020-7473 Introduction The Kiryandongo settlement for Sudanese refugees is located in the north-eastern corner of Uganda’s Masindi district. Part of a former cattle ranching area, land there was gazetted by the Ugandan government for use by refugees in 1990. The first transfers of refugees took place shortly afterwards, and the settlement is now well established, with land divided into plots on which people have built houses and have cultivated crops on a small scale. Anthropological field research (towards a D.Phil. in anthropology, Oxford University) was conducted in the settlement from October 1996 to March 1997 and between June and November 1997. During the course of the fieldwork UNHCR was involved in a definitive process whereby it sought to “hand over” responsibility for the settlement at Kiryandongo to the Ugandan government, arguing that the refugees were approaching self-sufficiency and that it was time for them to be absorbed completely into local government structures. The Ugandan government was reluctant to accept this new role, and the refugees expressed their disbelief and feelings of betrayal at the move. -

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE PREPAREDNESS IN UGANDA 17TH AUGUST 2018 (12:00 HRS) – UPDATE No 13 Situation Update from Democratic Republic of Congo as on 17th August 2018 Cumulative cases: 78 Confirmed cases : 51 Probable : 27 Total deaths : 44 Cases under investigation : 24 Areas affected : Two provinces o North Kivu - Mabalako; Butembo; Ocha; Musienene; Beni and Bingo o Ituri- Mambasa, Mandina EVD Preparedness in Uganda Note : 1. 5 ALERT cases (details under surveillance) 2. There is no confirmed case in Uganda 3. Lab Results a. None i) Coordination To ensure a better sample transport coordination, tracking while in transit and timely delivery, all samples from the sub-region (Kabarole, Kasese, Bundibugyo, Ntoroko and Bunyangabu districts) will be transported to UVRI using one designated vehicle. A team from the World Health Organization, World Food Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University had a meeting with the management of Bundibugyo Hospital to assess 1 their level of preparedness with regards to the Isolation facility. The meeting resolved to re-arrange the tents to ensure one-way flow and Infection Control and Prevention protocols. The District Engineer was requested to produce a structural plan and Bills of Quantities (BoQs) for the EVD Treatment Centre. In Ntoroko District, the surveillance and the communication teams were combined and travelled in one vehicle to the field. There is a shortage of vehicles to facilitate the movement of people to different areas/sites. The only vehicle available is of the WHO/STOP team that is supporting the district. -

National Population and Housing Census 2014 Area Specific Profiles – Moyo District FOREWORD Demographic and socio-economic data are useful for planning and evidence-based decision making in any country. Such data are collected through Population Censuses, Demographic and Socio-economic Surveys, Civil Registration Systems and other Administrative sources. In Uganda, however, the Population and Housing Census remains the main source of demographic data, especially at the sub-national level. Population Census taking in Uganda dates back to 1911 and since then the country has undertaken five such Censuses. The most recent, the National Population and Housing Census 2014, was undertaken under the theme ‘Counting for Planning and Improved Service Delivery’. The enumeration for the 2014 Census was conducted in August/September 2014. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) worked closely with different Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as Local Governments (LGs) to undertake the census exercise.
