30 The Saratoga Special Sunday, August 13, 2017 Special – Continued from page 30 “Let’s hope it’s not like that again.” Trained mainly by Horacio DePaz at Sagamore’s historic base in Glyndon, Md. and at Laurel Park, the horses have won 20 of 69 starts through Saturday with more than $1 million in earnings for the first time since 2010, when Shared Account won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Much of that suc- cess has come with 2-year-olds, includ- ing winners Barry Lee, He Hate Me, Southampton Way and Proportionality. Hough was known for his work with young horses, and can be credited with at least some of the Sagamore success this year even though some of the juve- niles are homebreds. “He’s one of the few phone numbers I have memorized,” Sagamore Farm’s chief of staff Jocelyn Brooks said Sat- urday when trying to locate Hough at Saratoga. She found him, and he dis- cussed his role while walking out of the track after Southampton Way was sec- ond in the Grade 2 Adirondack. “Horacio is a young guy so I kind of helped him with where to go, what to do, get stalls here and there, because he really didn’t have that experience,” Hough said. “I kind of do all things, kind of a general manager type thing.” Hough trained horses for Rankin’s family (Upson Downs Farm in Ken- tucky) and they reconnected last year. “He called me and together we kind of got things going our way,” Hough said. “It was going fine but we changed a few things.” With Hough’s guidance, Saga- more purchased Barry Lee at the OBS March 2-year-olds in training sale for $380,000. “Good, fast horse. Good, sound horse,” Hough said of the Violence colt he owns a part of along with his son Billy. “That’s all the right things for a 2-year-old in training, he worked well, he passed the vet, and a nice-looking horse.” Four months after he was purchased, the colt named after University of Wis- consin athletic director Barry Alvarez made a successful debut in a 5-furlong maiden special weight July 14 at Laurel Park, winning by 6 1/2 lengths. “We liked him, he was training great,” Rankin said of the Special’s 4-1 co-third choice on the morning line. Sunday, August 13, 2017 The Saratoga Special 31 Special – Continued from page 31 “He’s always had a lot of talent. For Laurel, we think he beat a pretty good field of horses down there. He’s very classy, does everything the right way. We’re excited about him.” Mo Diddley topped last year’s Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sale and makes his stakes debut for trainer Mark Casse on the second day of this year’s sale. The Uncle Mo colt was purchased for $450,000 by Cheyenne Stables, who owns with Gary Barber. “He broke to the outside fence and sat wide most of the race,” assistant trainer Norm Casse said of the colt’s only start at Churchill Downs May 18. “I think Florent (Geroux) had everybody measured and knew what he had under him. I wasn’t overly excited after that race, it was just an average race but since then he progressed really well.” Mo Diddley was scratched before getting a chance to run in the Bashford Manor, but was aimed for the Saratoga Special shortly thereafter. “He worked really well up to the Bashford Manor, he wasn’t a hundred-percent that morning, so we didn’t get to run him,” said Norm Casse. “I was really disap- pointed but we went ahead and picked out this race as a backup and he’s trained really well up to it, so we’re really excited to see him run.” The Casse barn put in the time to get Mo Diddley (8- Tod Marks Continued On Page 33 Favorite Copper Bullet exits a second in the Bashford Manor June 30 for trainer . Sunday, August 13, 2017 The Saratoga Special 33 Saratoga Memories, presented by Keeneland, is an ongoing series that looks back at some of the top moments from Keeneland Sales graduates among Saratoga’s best racing. Every horse starts somewhere, even Saratoga superstars. Keeneland Sales helps The Special look back at some memorable graded stakes winners – and Keeneland graduates – at the Spa. We’ll look back, re-connect and dig up some memories. Enjoy. Saratoga Special 2015 BY JOE CLANCY There were plenty of reasons for trainer Keith Desormeaux to send California-based Exagger- ator to the 2015 . The horse was good. He’d won his second start at Del Mar. He might avoid budding rival Nyquist. And, most importantly, Exaggerator acted like the kind of horse who could handle the travel and the un- familiar territory. Then circumstances threw another obstacle Exaggerator’s way. “We couldn’t get a flight,” Desormeaux said. “He flew to Lexington on Wednesday, then got on a van and shipped to Saratoga Thursday. That’s 15 hours I think. Then he went out and won the race. He’s got the constitution to fly, to ship across the country and rebound from that and then win a race as a 2-year-old. That shows you what he’s worth and what he can do.” Tod Marks Desormeaux said all that a few days before Ex- Exaggerator flows toward the finish in the 2015 Saratoga Special. aggerator won the in 2016, but lion Delta Downs Jackpot. Dawn Raid’s 2017 foal is a filly by Medaglia d’Oro and the 12-year-old mare was bred to Curlin again this year. As for Exaggerator, Big Chief and Desormeaux took on partners Head of Plains Partners and Rocker O Ranch as the 3-year-old campaign unfolded, and sold the breeding rights to WinStar Farm before the Kentucky Derby. The three-time Grade 1 winner retired at the end of last season with six wins and $3,581,120 in earnings. Exaggerator stood his first season at WinStar in 2017 and will have foals next year.
