The Worcester JCC Gala & Silent Auction GalaGala2021 Proceeds benefitting the worcester Jcc’s Camp Scholarship Program Honoring Deb Martin & Dan Shertzer Saturday for their generosity, service, and March 13 commitment to our 7:00pm community. Welcome Welcome to the 18th annual fundraising event in support of the Worcester JCC Camp Scholarship Program. Chai the Hebrew word for ‘life’ is represented by the number 18, which is considered a “good omen” within the Jewish world. While the past year has not felt particularly lucky due to the pandemic, this symbolism reminds us to find deeper meaning in this important event. Despite the challenges of holding a virtual Gala, we are grateful for the support of the JCC community and we are fortunate for the opportunity to celebrate our very special honorees - Deb Martin and Dan Shertzer. Deb and Dan are deserving recipients of the Jacob Hiatt Community Service Award and their example of volunteerism inspires us to support the JCC during a year that has threatened our deeply held ideas about community. Raising much needed funds for camp scholarships is more important than ever as we emerge from the isolation of the past year. Proceeds from this event will provide hundreds of camp scholarships for children whose families could not otherwise afford to send them to camp. The members of the Gala Committee understand that their work is in support of a worthy cause. We thank them for devoting their time and energy to developing this virtual Gala. Event co-chairs Maria Rao and Doug Arbetter deserve special acknowledgement for their energy, creativity, and dedication to organizing this virtual event. We also salute our valued videographer Ron Rosenstock, better known for his fine art photography, for contributing his considerable talents. New and returning sponsors are essential to the success of the Gala. They appreciate the value of the JCC Camp Scholarship Program and recognize that all children deserve high quality summer programming. Low income families want the best for their children and the JCC, thanks to these donors, is privileged to be able to serve them. Families that lack the finances, time, resources, and networks look to us to help access opportunities that may be transformative for their children. The inequities that the pandemic has exacerbated make it more important than ever to help families in need in our community. It is traditional to make contributions in multiples of 18 in order to give life or luck. Please be as generous as you can. Your contributions toward the camp scholarship fund can make a tremendous difference in the lives of hundreds of children! The Jacob Hiatt Community Service Award is presented to individuals or an organization that have demonstrated unselfish leadership and commitment to the Jewish Community Center and the community at large. Jacob Hiatt was a philanthropist from Worcester. He and his wife Frances generously supported the JCC. Deb and Dan are both Worcester transplants, but they have grown deep roots in the greater Worcester community. At the JCC, they have held just about every volunteer role that there is to hold. For example, Deb chaired the committee that wrote the current vision statement of the JCC. Dan chaired the Board Nominating Committee, served as Board President, served as JCC Treasurer for several years, and played a key role on the Executive Director Search Committee in 2017. They have both helped plan, organize and lead countless JCC annual events and activities (including the Gala and the famous scotch basket.) Naomi and Isaac, Deb and Dan’s beautiful children, attended JCC preschool, summer camp, fencing, basketball, swim club and more. Naomi has followed in her parents’ footsteps by volunteering for the past two and a half years in the JCC Finance Office and she is also a lifeguard! Deb and Dan are tireless JCC leaders who are always available, and always helping to secure the continued growth and success of our organization. In doing so, they have made the JCC home for themselves and their family and welcome and support others to do the same. They have donated generously to annual and capital campaigns and are the kind of donors who are so much a part of the fabric of the community that, when you go to thank them, they turn that around and thank you for giving them the opportunity. One thing we know is that the JCC is better for having Deb and Dan leading and guiding us all these years. We are so grateful to them and for them and their service to the community! The Jacob Hiatt Support The Worcester JCC Community Service Award Camp Scholarship Program Please Consider Making a Pledge Tonight To Support The Worcester JCC Camp Scholarship Program The proceeds from your auction purchases and pledges tonight will help provide local children with a safe and fun summer camp experience. • For over 50 years the JCC has been providing scholarships to families in financial need. • ALL of the funds raised at the JCC Gala (approximately $60,000 in 2020) go to fund the Camp Scholarship Program, which includes scholarship assistance to the early childhood summer program, day camp, and sports camp families and children. • Over 20% of the summer camp program is subsidized with full or partial scholarship funds. • Despite Covid, last year, we awarded thousands in summer camp scholarships to families in need.
