8 VOICE TRUST Activities in 2012-13 Friendship Children's Home in Siruganur Village, Trichy District, Tamil Nadu, India for parentless and at risk Children (el;G rpwhh; ,y;yk;> rpWfD}h;> jpUr;rp khtl;lk;) in collaboration with AEM (les Amis des Enfants du Monde), Montrouge, France and Social Welfare Department of Government and individual Donors

Reason for starting “JOY TO CHILDREN” Program under AEM-VOICE collaboration was to provide life supports to parentless and at risk Children. So, “Friendship Children's Home” offers children love and affection, care and concern, study and games, skills and developments…

AEM extends supports from 2006 for Friendship Children's Home in Siruganur village, Trichy District, State of Tamil Nadu, southern India both for the infrastructural developments and for the maintenance of parentless and at risk Children.

VOICE Trust identified 42 parentless and at risk Children and presented them to AEM Mission 2006 by Mr. Jean Paul PLAGNAT – the then President ofAEM and Mr. Roland CREMADES.

15 Children were accepted under “JOY TO CHILDREN” Program of AEM-VOICE and the Friendship Children's Home began to function from 2007 with infrastructural developments and with food – stay – health care – educational and other empowerments.

Number of Children in Friendship Home had to be raised to 20 or above in order to get approval from Government of Tamil Nadu. So, 25 Children are accepted in Friendship Home, with provision for approval for 20 Children. During 2012, there were 22 Children in Friendship Home.

From 2007, AEM extended assistance for food needs, stay needs, health care needs, educational needs, entertainment needs and other empowerments for 15 Children. VOICE Trust managed the expenses for the other Children from supports by individual donors.

In 2009, District Collector of Trichy District gave Temporary Approval through District Social Welfare Office. In 2010, State Social Welfare Department gave provisional approval are asked VOICE Trust to furnish the following 4 Documents:

1. Structural Stability of Buildings by Government approved surveyors. 2. License for Buildings by Thasildar of Mannachanallur Taluk. 3. Sanitary Certificate from Department of Health. 4. No Objection Certificate from Fire Service Department.

VOICE Trust worked hard to get these 4 certificates and submitted the same to State Government. After 9 months, the Permanent Approval came from State Government with instruction to renew it in every 3 years. Renewal request will be made during last quarter of 2013.

That is why the number for short duration courses are increasing. While activities with approval from Tamil Nadu Open University will continue, still, focus in future will be on short duration courses in ecological bio diversity, environmental protection and empowerment of the disadvantaged.

10 VOICE TRUST 2012-13

Integrated Pest Management(IPM) in Chilli Crop in area in collaboration with DRDCT (Deepam Rural Development Charitable Trust) and ITC Limited under Social Initiatives Programme

Like last year, VOICE Trust extended Resource Supports to Chilli Farmers of Thauraiyur Area in collaboration with DRDCT Perambalur and ITC Limited – Coimbatore.

IPM is an ecological approach to crop protection and discourages farmers solely depending upon pesticides.IPM aims to bring good impacts in farming communities such as reduction in cost cultivation, reduction in pollution levels, increase in yield, increase in net income and elimination of pesticide poisoning, elimination of polluting contamination and also promotion of better environment and promotion of sustainable agriculture.

Farmer Field School is conducted for implementing IPM strategies. The main objective is to make farmers experts in their own fields. Such empowerment is essential to them to make agriculture more profitable and sustainable in future in the context of global warming, climate changes and economic crisis.

IPM sessions were planned in Land Preparation, Base Manuring, Khariff Season pointers, Seed Selection, Seed Treatment, Seed Efficiency, Nursery Raising, Transplantation, Growth Promoters, Pest Control, Pheromone Traps, Timely Harvesting, Ethical Marketing.

12 IPM Sessions were organised from 22.08.2012 to 15.12.2012 for the benefit of Chilli Farmers Sikkathambur Palayam and Kottathur Clusters including Konapathai, Sangampatti, Govindapuram, Renganathapuram, Krishnapuram and Servaikaranpatti villages.

Mr. P.Gopal, Project Manager of DRDCT was one of the participants of the first TOT in 1999 organised by VOICE Trust in collaboration with IGSSS. He proposed the name of VOICE Trust to ITC Limited for IPM in Chilli under Social Initiatives Programs(CSR Schemes).

Mr. N. Krishnasamy, former Director of Central IPM Centre (Govt. Of India) first in Tamil Nadu region and later also in Kerala region, was the Chief Resource Person along with VOICE Team consisting of Mrs. A. Jecintha ,Mrs. R. Kavitha, Mrs. R. Victoria and Mr.A. Gregory.

Due to lack of rain in Thuraiyur area, the nursery raising could not be done in Aadi Tamil Month (August 2012) and the returns also was not satisfactory. In fact, many Chilli Farmers experienced loss due to monsoon failure and delayed transplantation activities. Still they learnt IPM techniques for achieving sustainable agriculture.

11 VOICE TRUST 2012-13 Bio Diverse Agri Trainings to young Girls and Boys for Saving Agriculture for quality life in collaborative with Friends of Earth through Global Giving, USA.

Gregory – Project Director of VOICE Trust visited World Bank Head Quarters in Washington D.C., USA and presented a project for Multiple Cropping by 420 Women Farmers for ClimateAdaptation.

When VOICE Trust could not win the project before the grand jury, co-participants suggested to VOICE Trust to approach Global Giving. So, VOICE Trust joined the September 2010 Open Challenge and won a place in Global Giving Website for Project Number 6265 titled as “Biodiverse Agri Trainings to 1500 Youth every year”.

12 VOICE TRUST 2012-13 Students Environment Groups (National Green Corps(NGC) in 50 Schools of Lalgudi Educational District) in collaboration with Department of Environment, Govt. of Tamil Nadu

Pollution-free air, contamination-free water, toxin-free land, poison-free food, noise-free traffic are some signs of good environment for quality of life.
