Centering largely in these mountains in the area where the boundaries of the four States converge are five national forests — the Cherokee, Pisgah, Nantahala, Chattahoochee, and Sumter. The more eastern of the ranges on the slopes of which thesefo rests lie is the Blue Ridge which rises abruptly out of the Piedmont country and forms the divide between waters flowing southeast and south into the Atlantic Ocean and northwest to the Tennessee River en route to the Gulf of Mexico. If you are an outdoor person, you will immediately know what I’m talking about. That first time you walk outside in late summer and you feel a crispness to the air. It’s that Indian-Summer feeling where it is still warm but not sticky. The wind feels different; the air not so heavy. I almost turned around and went to the closet to find my backpack. Later that day, Melissa said she wanted to go have a picnic at our favorite spot; Amicalola Falls State Park. We were married here and had many a picnic at the Top-of-the-Falls when we were courting. We have backpacked from the other side of Springer Mountain on the AT into Amicalola Falls State Park. So, this is one special place to us. We love it. The park has been regularly named as one of the best state parks in the country by a host of different organizations, including National Geographic. It is notable for many reasons, the most important being that it is essentially the Southern Terminus of the Appalachian Trail, and it has the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains; 729 feet (which is four times the height of Niagra)! This month we wanted to feature this stunning park as a prelude to a larger story about the Appalachian Trail. The park lies in the northwest corner of Dawson County, Georgia, due west of Dahlonega and south east of Ellijay, Georgia.

If the father died, the surviving widow may not have been appointed the guardian. But dead parents were not the only reason a guardian may have been appointed for a child. If another relative died and wanted to leave the child property, they may have indicated who they wanted appointed that child’s guardian upon the relative’s death. Sometimes that guardian was not the child’s parent. The most frequent situation of a child with living parents being appointed a guardian is when a grandparent was not overly fond or trusting of their son-in-law. The grandparent, instead of giving their daughter an inheritance, gives it to the daughter’s children instead and appointing someone else a guardian. Centering largely in these mountains in the area where the boundaries of the four States converge are five national forests—the Cherokee, Pisgah, Nantahala, Chattahoochee, and Sumter. The more eastern of the ranges on the slopes of which these forests lie is the Blue Ridge which rises abruptly out of the Piedmont country and forms the divide between waters flowing southeast and south into the Atlantic Ocean and northwest to the Tennessee River en route to the Gulf of Mexico. The southeastern slope of the ridge is cut deeply by the rivers which rush toward the plains, the top is rounded, and the northwestern slopes are gentle. Only a few of its peaks rise as much as a mile above the sea. The western range, roughly paralleling the Blue Ridge and connected to it by transverse ranges, is divided into segments by rivers born high on the slopes between the transverse ranges.
